The pet I’ll never forget: Poppy the curious, clever dog – who searches for missing people

A beloved family pet, she is also the best employee ever, brilliant at her rescue work. If everyone could be more like Poppy, the world would be a better place

When we picked up a nine-week-old black labrador from a couple just outside Callander, Scotland, I had no idea that she would soon be an employee of mine. Poppy became the family fur baby and we realised early on how clever and empathic she is. I work as a Special Operations Response Team paramedic and we decided to involve her in my search work in 2021 when she was only a year old because we knew it would play to her strengths. She took to it immediately.

Poppy and our team of dogs look for missing people. My colleagues and I then provide any medical assistance needed. She is trained to search without needing to smell someone’s scent from an item such as clothing. During training, we hide our volunteers along the riverbank, in the woods, beside lochs and canals, and set the dogs off. They have to find the people and come back. Poppy’s curious nature has served her well. She loves the undergrowth, sniffing about and finding things.

The Yellow Tie review – John Malkovich gives major hauteur as legendary record-hating maestro

This biopic of Sergiu Celibidache, the renowned Romanian conductor who refused all recordings, is a sturdy labour of love directed by his son

Here is an old-fashioned biopic from central Europe that is also a labour of love on the part of its director: a little stolid and stately, yes, but robustly made, heartfelt and high-minded, with workmanlike performances and decent visual effects work. It is the story of the Romanian conductor and composer Sergiu Celibidache, a brilliant musician who became renowned among musical connoisseurs in the years following the second world war for his unique and uncompromisingly purist belief – derived from his Zen Buddhist studies – that music should never be recorded. He believed that LPs and CDs were inert and dead, and that music had to be experienced live, in the passionately authentic present.

The director is the musician’s son, Serge Ioan Celebidachi, and as an older man in his rural French retirement, he is played with unsubtly querulous hauteur by John Malkovich, especially in the misjudged opening scene where he yells at Japanese executives for presuming to offer him a recording deal. Ben Schnetzer is the younger Celibidache, a prodigy whose musical ambition infuriates his old-fashioned father (Sean Bean), a well-regarded functionary who assumed that his son would follow him into public office. Celebidache Sr therefore demands the return of his birthday gift, a certain type of yellow tie that had been favoured by generations of the family’s menfolk, and which here becomes a fetish of the heartbroken young Sergiu’s need to please his father but also break away from him.

Trump’s recent statements on the economy are even more bonkers than usual | Steven Greenhouse

Our ‘genius’ president is revealing his ignorance of economics, fueling concerns about the threat he poses to the world

Donald Trump recently made a bold claim about his abilities, writing on Truth Social: “The only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!”

But in the days before and after that post, Trump made one mind-boggling statement after another, including one that raised the possibility of cutting off all trade with dozens of the US’s trading partners. The president’s statements had many experts questioning not just his intelligence, but also whether he – and the outlandish policies he was proposing – were a clear and present danger to both the US economy and the world economy. Public respect for Trump’s economic sense has fallen so low that just 7% of Americans think he should take the lead in regulating AI, according to a recent WSJ poll.

Is your partner on their phone and ignoring you? I’ve got a buzzword for that

From microcheating to quiet quitting to weaponised incompetence, new terms to describe relationship failings are abundant. But that doesn’t mean there’s not space for some more ...

Are you committing “attention infidelity”? The New York Times alerted me to this expression, coined by the public opinion researcher Daniel Cox in a new book on the “crisis of human connection”. It’s exactly what you’d expect: failing to focus fully on your partner because you’re indulging in what the NYT calls, rather judgily, “the banal distraction of dead-eyed scrolling”. Who are you calling dead-eyed? This reel of an armadillo in a paddling pool has my animated attention!

Surely we’re all a bit attention-unfaithful – only saints don’t sometimes absent-mindedly thumb through medieval manuscript hedgehog memes while their partner relates a boring anecdote about how they thought they saw a strange bird that turned out to be a plastic bag. What I find more interesting is how we seem now to need a lexicon of relationship bad behaviour.

BT buys TalkTalk out of administration to keep 2.5M customers connected

Former state-owned telco monopoly BT Group has bought TalkTalk's consumer and wholesale businesses out of administration, rescuing services used by 2.5 million customers. BT says it acquired TalkTalk Telecommunications Limited and PlatformX Communications Limited on a debt-free basis. It expects a total cash impact of approximately £400 million in its current financial year, including the acquisition consideration and other costs. BT said it stepped in after a prolonged sale process failed to find a buyer for the consumer and wholesale operations. TalkTalk reported approximately £1.2 billion in revenue over the past 12 months but was loss-making. Separately, TalkTalk Business and UK technology services biz ARO announced plans to merge in August. The UK Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) said a collapse could disrupt emergency calls, hospital communications, and medical alarms. DCMS Secretary of State Lisa Nandy stated: "Phone and broadband services are vital national infrastructure. If TalkTalk services fail, there is a genuine risk to life and public services – including to hospitals, schools, and emergency care." Nandy issued a Public Interest Intervention Notice under section 42 of the Enterprise Act 2002, allowing her to consider the wider public interest alongside competition concerns. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) must report to her by October 19. BT says the businesses will operate separately and continue to compete pending the regulatory review. Kester Mann, director of consumer and connectivity at FDM CCS Insight, said: "Given BT's strong position in the broadband market, it will inevitably also evoke scrutiny from regulators keen to ensure a fair and competitive playing field. This is even more relevant coming just days after competition authorities raised serious concerns over nexfibre's planned acquisition of Netomnia." Last week, the CMA provisionally identified competition concerns in wholesale fixed broadband services over nexfibre's proposed acquisition of Substantial, Netomnia's parent company. BT Group chief executive Allison Kirkby said of the TalkTalk deal: "This is a genuinely unprecedented situation, where millions of citizens and businesses were at risk if TalkTalk had collapsed. Our immediate priority is to stabilise the business and provide a safety net for the households and businesses who rely on TalkTalk." Clive Selley will lead the stabilization and integration planning with immediate effect. Martijn Blanken takes over his role as CEO of BT International. Mann noted: "The deal cements a painful decline for one of the UK's most established and well-known broadband providers. With a clear value-for-money proposition, it should have been thriving amid continued concerns over the cost of living. "But it failed to respond sufficiently to a fast-changing and increasingly competitive market, became burdened with debt following a buyout in 2021, and regularly suffered with poor perception over service. Its demise should serve as a stark warning to any value-focused telecom provider." ®

After Siemens Re-Licenses OpenRadioss, Rocky Linux Announces Open-Source Fork

- In 2022 Altair Engineering open sourced "OpenRadioss", an industry-leading finite element solver under the GNU AGPL License, reports Phoronix.

- Siemens acquired Altair Engineering last year

- Siemens closes access to OpenRadioss.

"Siemens didn't just end the project but they shutdown the GitHub repository that hosted the open-source code and removed other resources that had built around it," writes Phoronix, before announcing a new open-source community fork:

Radioss has been an industry-leading solver for analyzing crashes, blasts, and other purposes. Altair creating OpenRadioss was a huge milestone for the technical computing industry. It also had other effects like for myself in finally being able to benchmark with this (Open)Radioss code for CPU performance testing compared to the expensive licensing on Radioss itself...

Siemens argues the OpenRadioss closure is for consolidating efforts:

"After four years of successful community-driven research, Siemens is entering a new chapter for the Radioss solver. To accelerate innovation and provide the robust support our global users require for production-grade simulation, we are consolidating our efforts."

It was Brian Clemens. founder/VP Rocky Linux and the Rocky Enterprise Software Foundation who launched the community fork of OpenRadioss — to be called OpenCourant. Its web site announces they'll be "carrying forward the OpenRadioss code base under the GNU AGPL, in the open, where it belongs."

Phoronix writes in a follow-up:

OpenCourant is based on the last publicly known open-source OpenRadioss snapshot before Siemens shut it down and removed access to the Git repository... OpenCourant continues with the OpenRadioss GNI AGPLv3 licensing and will be run as part of the Rocky Enterprise Software Foundation. They have run into a small issue though with part of OpenRadioss consisting of binary dependencies and not having the very latest versions prior to Siemens' removal of the repository. Details on that via this discussion thread for anyone that happens to have recent OpenRadioss binaries.

In other open source news, Kagi is ending their development work on the Orion Browser for Linux and Windows, reports the site Linuxiac — but Kagi "plans to open-source both versions so other developers or organizations can keep them going."
