Italian police say Maltese citizen under investigation for smuggling after animals found packed in car

A Maltese man is facing animal cruelty charges after allegedly attempting to transport 300 tortoises and 77 parrots from Sicily to Malta.

The animals were found packed into a car near the boarding area for a Malta-bound catamaran during an inspection at the Sicilian port of Pozzallo, the local unit of Italy’s financial police squad said on Monday.

However, Exxon and Canada-based Suncor are arguing that federal law prevents state courts from hearing Boulder’s climate change lawsuit.

In late September 2026, 23-year-old Liz Lindseay Isaacs testified before a Senate Judiciary Subcommittee about her harrowing experience after a Flock camera misidentified her Dodge Durango, linking her to a fatal hit-and-run miles away from where she actually was... "The cell door was shut, and it was not opened for approximately 86 hours". She spent a total of 13 days locked up — including the terrifying stint in solitary confinement — before prosecutors finally realized the AI had completely botched the vehicle identification and dropped the charges.

A Flock spokesperson contacted for a CNN report argued the incident "appears to have been the result of human errors in judgment unrelated to Flock." The woman is now suing the Florida patrol over wrongful arrest, saying she partially blames the two police officers who she says claimed there was incriminating damage on her vehicle when there wasn't. But her lawyer says he blames Flock. "Because if it wasn't for Flock we wouldn't be here in the first place, and this whole nightmare... would not have kicked off."
And while police claim Flock solves more crimes, the lawyer adds that "you would also solve a lot more crimes if the police were allowed to kick down your door and come in and search your house whenever they want to, or search your car whenever they want to or violate your rights in other ways. There has to be safeguards in police that comport through the 4th Amendment, like the warrant requirements. It's as simple as that. This technology is growing so fast that we are unable to control it. And we must get ahead of it." And the woman incarcerated for 13 days agreed. "I wouldn't have went to jail if it wasn't for Flock."

Florida was also the site of another Flock-related news story. ("Florida Deputy Allegedly Used Flock Cameras to Stalk 17-Year-Old Girl, Visiting Her at Work 9 Times".) The officer "was charged with official misconduct and accessing computer electronic devices without authority — both are third-degree felonies. In Florida, if he's found guilty on both charges, he could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison."


"Americans have no idea who's looking at that information, or why it has to be collected in the first place," U.S. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said Sunday, adding "They deserve to know."


SCHUMER: "This company said the data on its cameras was encrypted and secure. Then hackers took one down and found the key sitting right there," Schumer said. "Most Americans just want to get to work and get home to their families without a private company keeping a file on where they go. The next step here is simple: turn the lens around and zoom in on Flock." Schumer also demanded answers from Flock about how much data from its cameras sits on its servers and whether any federal agency has accessed that data, directly or through local law enforcement.
Schumer's office sent an official letter to Flock's CEO giving them 12 days to respond to its questions about Flock's data retention and security policies. "Americans should not have to sacrifice their right to privacy simply by driving down a public street," Schumer wrote.

Garrett Langley, the CEO of Flock Safety — a company that deploys over 120,000 automated license plate reader cameras across the United States — recently requested that his Atlanta home be blurred out on Google Maps Street View. In swift retaliation, online activists pinpointed the property and officially marked his front lawn as a "Public Toilet" on the mapping app.

NEW YORK (ANP) - De Amerikaanse aandelenbeurzen zijn maandag gemengd geopend, na de winsten van vrijdag door een zwak cijfer over de banengroei in de Verenigde Staten. Door het tegenvallende banenrapport wordt de kans op een nieuwe renteverhoging door de Amerikaanse centrale bank later deze maand minder waarschijnlijk geacht.

De aandacht zal deze week daarom vooral uitgaan naar de notulen van de rentevergadering van de Federal Reserve van vorige maand, die woensdag uitkomen. De Fed verhoogde toen de rente voor het eerst sinds juli 2023 om de hoge inflatie tegen te gaan.

De Dow-Jonesindex noteerde kort na aanvang 0,1 procent lager op 51.139 punten. De brede S&P 500 klom 0,2 procent tot 7737 punten. De Nasdaq ging 0,3 procent vooruit tot 27.272 punten. Op vrijdag steeg de technologiegraadmeter nog 1,2 procent, gestuwd door winsten voor onder meer Nvidia, SpaceX en Tesla.

SCHIPHOL (ANP) - De op Schiphol voor huisvredebreuk gearresteerde demonstranten van Extinction Rebellion (XR) zijn weer vrijgelaten, meldt een woordvoerder van de actiegroep. Het gaat om 32 personen, in tegenstelling tot de 31 die de Koninklijke Marechaussee eerder meldde. De arrestanten zijn met een bus naar het dichtstbijzijnde station gebracht. Het is onduidelijk wat de arrestatie voor gevolgen heeft voor hen.

Even na twaalven begon XR met een demonstratie voorbij de security, in lounge 1, op zo'n 50 meter van KLM's frequentflyerlounge. De activisten willen dat KLM het frequentflyerprogramma stopzet en iets doet aan de klimaatcrisis.

Met het frequentflyerprogramma kunnen klanten Miles sparen als ze vliegen met KLM, Air France of Air Europa. De Miles kunnen ingewisseld worden voor vluchten, upgrades naar businessclass, of bijvoorbeeld extra bagage. Volgens XR is het frequentflyerprogramma "de meest perverse marketing in deze klimaatcrisis". Het programma zou veelvliegen en omvliegen belonen.

Na de ophef van vorige week lijkt het opgelost: minister Heinen beloofde kleine spaarders alsnog te ontzien. Overweeg je om vóór 1 januari spaargeld aan je kinderen of kleinkinderen te geven, dan is de vraag niet óf hij de plannen repareert, maar voor wélk jaar. Daarover heeft hij zich nog niet uitgesproken.

Op 1 oktober, de tweede dag van het begrotingsdebat, zei Heinen dat het kabinet bereid is de omstreden grens in de nieuwe box 3 aan te passen. Dat meldt De Belegger. Een concreet bedrag noemde hij niet.

Twee grenzen, twee jaren

In het kabinetsplan van 29 september staan twee verschillende vrijstellingen. In 2027 geldt nog het oude stelsel met vaste percentages, en daarin zakt het heffingsvrij vermogen naar €30.846 per persoon. Vanaf 2028 komt daar een heffingsvrij resultaat van €1.000 aan rendement voor in de plaats.

De Belegger leest de toezegging als een reparatie van die tweede grens. Volgens de site ging het om het heffingsvrije resultaat in het stelsel dat per 2028 moet ingaan, dat ruim 850.000 extra mensen de heffing in zou trekken. Ook Raisin schrijft dat de kritiek van begin oktober zich vooral richt op de verlaging naar €1.000.

Ik kan me voorstellen dat u als Kamer de opdracht geeft om de grens op een ander niveau te leggen.

Niet iedereen leest het zo. Volgens het financiële blog Mr FOB gaat Heinen ook opnieuw kijken naar de tijdelijke ingreep voor 2027, met de vrijstelling van €30.846 en het hogere forfait. Ook de halvering voor 2027 heeft volgens Vastgoedrealist geen Kamermeerderheid. Zolang er geen nieuw voorstel ligt, weet je dus niet of de grens voor 2027 meegaat in de reparatie.

Voor schenkers draait alles om één datum: 1 januari 2027.

Waarom 2027 voor schenkers het jaar is

In ons stuk Spaargeld nu aan je kinderen geven om box 3 te ontlopen? Het levert je mogelijk maar één jaar voordeel op rekenden we voor dat schenken vooral in 2027 iets oplevert. Dat jaar hangt af van je vermogen op 1 januari. Volgens Revosave betaal je zonder fiscale partner box 3-belasting als je vermogen op die dag boven €30.846 uitkomt. Met een partner ligt de grens samen op €61.692.

Scenario 1: de grens van €30.846 blijft staan

Dagelijkse Standaard rekende met het voorlopige spaarforfait van 1,27 procent en het tarief van 36 procent. Dan betaal je zo'n 0,46 procent belasting over het spaargeld boven de vrijstelling. Een alleenstaande met €60.000 spaargeld betaalt in 2027 volgens die berekening ongeveer €133. Met de grens van dit jaar is dat ongeveer €3.

In dit scenario blijft het voordeel van schenken zoals in ons eerdere rekenvoorbeeld, waar wij op €134 uitkwamen. Elke €1.000 die je vóór 1 januari schenkt uit het deel boven de vrijstelling, scheelt in 2027 ruwweg €4,60 aan box 3-belasting.

Scenario 2: terug naar €60.098

Op Prinsjesdag was het plan nog om het heffingsvrij vermogen in 2027 licht te verhogen naar €60.098, schrijft Dagelijkse Standaard. Volgens een overzicht van ManMag is dat voor fiscale partners samen €120.196.

Gaat de grens terug naar dat bedrag, dan verdwijnt het box 3-voordeel van schenken voor veel ouders en grootouders bijna helemaal. De oma met €60.000 zit dan onder de vrijstelling en betaalt in 2027 helemaal geen box 3. Schenken levert haar in box 3 dan niets op. Alleen wie ver boven de grens zit, houdt nog een klein voordeel over het deel daarboven.

Wanneer je het weet

Volgens PwC komt Heinen uiterlijk op 12 oktober met nieuwe voorstellen om kleine spaarders te ontzien. Op die dag staat ook het wetgevingsoverleg over het Belastingplan 2027 gepland. Volgens Deloitte stemt de Tweede Kamer op 12 november, en de Eerste Kamer op 15 december.

Hoe de reparatie betaald moet worden, is volgens De Belegger nog volledig open. Dat maakt het des te belangrijker om te kijken wat er straks precies in het voorstel staat.

Wat je nu kunt doen

• Wacht het voorstel van uiterlijk 12 oktober af en kijk welk jaar erin wordt aangepast: alleen het heffingsvrije resultaat vanaf 2028, of ook de €30.846 voor 2027.
• Zit je onder €60.098 per persoon (€120.196 met partner)? Dan hangt je hele box 3-voordeel van schenken af van die ene keuze.
• Reken de schenkbelasting mee. Boven de vrijstellingen kan die het box 3-voordeel ruim overtreffen, zoals ons eerdere rekenvoorbeeld liet zien.
• Neem pas een definitief besluit als duidelijk is wat de Kamer op 12 november doet. Je vermogen telt op 1 januari, dus je kunt tot en met 31 december schenken.

Games Workshop is on the hunt for a head of IT to guide the organization through its technological saga for the next two years. The UK-based tabletop games retailer and manufacturer of the globally popular Warhammer figures said that under the fixed-term contract, the heroic individual would take overall responsibility for its global IT and customer technology capability, and report to the Chief Operating Officer. “The role has a broad remit spanning our core technology estate, information security, major systems change and the technology behind our customer-facing digital platforms, including warhammer.com,” the job ad said, although sadly it closed for applications over the weekend. “We need someone who can understand what Games Workshop needs now, anticipate what we will need in the future, and make good decisions about how technology supports the long-term success of the business,” it said. Candidates might want to be aware that, if they are lucky enough to be offered the job and they accept the mission, the battle will not be an easy one. The head of IT will take responsibility for core IT environment and information security, advising senior management on technology, security, risk and investment. They will also support the teams to keep “significant technology programs moving, openly tackling the challenges that come with major change, and ensure that we continue to make rapid progress.” The Nottingham-based retailer and manufacturer is in the midst of ERP and supply chain management systems overhauls that were first mobilized years ago and have been beset with delays and over-runs. Back in January 2021, The Register reported that Games Workshop delayed its Microsoft Dynamics-based ERP rollout and appointed a new integrator, having already hoped to go live in 2020. By September that year, it said project issues were impacting the development of new features in online shopping. In January 2022, it added another £500k to the project budget with no end in sight. A year later, it said the business faced ongoing challenges to integrate new IT systems when it was still heavily reliant on working with its legacy tech systems. “Finishing these projects and upgrading our systems continue to be a key area of focus. We are making some progress but it's costing us more time and money – we will remain cost conscious," it told investors. Around four years later, challenges remain ongoing, according to the latest annual report, published in July, for the year ending in May 2026. It said the group’s main financial system is still being supported by a number of legacy ERP applications for which “we have identified control deficiencies in our previous audits.” These still exist, according to a review of IT systems. The report added that the responsibility for delivering IT had moved to its operational manufacturing and supply chain director, under the COO from June, a decision which “helped bring all of the internal departments together.” “Our Systems Improvement Plan (SIP) is on track with very clear milestones for us all to support and deliver,” it added. Games Workshop is famous for the phenomenon of Warhammer 40,000 — also known as WH40K or 40K — thought to be the most popular miniature wargame in the world. Battles are set in the distant future, leaving the technology department to hope the end of its long-running ERP saga comes before that date. ®
