Apple let stuff expire, so now we have to re-roll our certs, hooray.

I have questions:

1. When they say:

   Installer packages [...] will no longer install. Re-sign all packages with your new certificate before this date. Mac apps [...] will keep working -- no action needed.

   does this mean that I need to re-sign my old DMG files, but do not need to re-sign the .app and .saver bundles inside them?

   (I have some old DMGs still available for download because e.g, 6.00 was the last release that still works on 10.7; so I guess I need to re-sign those if I want them to continue to be installable on old Macs?)

2. I re-rolled my certs, and now I have two named "Developer ID Application: Jamie Zawinski (4627ATJELP)", one that expires in 2026 (with the old CA) and one that expires in 2031 (with the new CA). How can I tell which one has been used to sign something?

   "codesign --display -vvvvvvv --deep --strict" just shows me the name of the cert, which is the same for both of them.

3. I have my new sacrifice zone Mac and I am trying to get it to sign things with the new cert. Xcode 27 is logged into my Apple account, but in "Build for Profiling", signing fails, and "Settings / Apple accounts / > / > / Manage Certificates" shows two lines saying "Developer ID Application", created today, and the second one says "Missing private key". Wat?

   It's not clear to me whether these "Developer ID Application" certs it lists are the same as the "4627ATJELP" cert.

   Keychain Access seems to concur that the 4627ATJELP cert does not have a private key but I don't know how to get it in there. Re-downloading it from Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles did not do it.

WASHINGTON (ANP/BLOOMBERG) - Donald Trump werkt aan een nieuwe maatregel om de dieselprijzen in de Verenigde Staten omlaag te krijgen voor de tussentijdse verkiezingen in november. De Amerikaanse president wil de beperkingen op het gebruik van een belastingvrije variant van diesel versoepelen, meldt persbureau Bloomberg op basis van ingewijden.

Het plan richt zich op zogeheten rode diesel en zou het gebruik daarvan verder verruimen. Rode diesel is meestal alleen beschikbaar voor gebruik buiten de openbare weg, bijvoorbeeld in landbouwmachines. Nadere details over de maatregel waren nog niet beschikbaar volgens Bloomberg. Het plan wordt naar verwachting deze maandag bekendgemaakt.

De regering-Trump probeert de dieselkosten al langer omlaag te brengen. Die zijn sterk gestegen door de Iranoorlog en Oekraïense aanvallen op Russische raffinaderijen. De maatregel komt boven op het akkoord van de G7-landen van afgelopen vrijdag om tot 100 miljoen vaten olie en diesel uit hun noodvoorraden op de markt te brengen. Trump had daar flink op aangedrongen.

Recordhoogte

De dieselprijs bereikte vorige maand een recordhoogte in de VS. Doordat diesel wordt gebruikt in de landbouw en scheepvaart, maar ook om huizen te verwarmen, werken de hogere prijzen door in de hele Amerikaanse economie. Dat leidt tot duurdere consumentengoederen en frustratie onder boeren die tijdens het oogstseizoen met hoge brandstofprijzen te maken krijgen.

Parlementariërs uit landbouwstaten dringen er bij Trump op aan om de Amerikaanse export van diesel te verbieden om de prijzen te drukken. Maar na het besluit van de G7 op vrijdag zei de president dat hij de verkoop van de brandstof aan het buitenland niet aan banden zal leggen.

Heb je een variabel energiecontract, of liep je vaste contract af zonder dat je iets regelde? Dan betaal je deze herfst waarschijnlijk meer dan nodig. Volgens vergelijkingssite Keuze.nl is een vast jaarcontract in oktober gemiddeld €473 per jaar goedkoper dan een variabel contract. Een maand eerder was dat verschil nog €323.

En dat terwijl het stookseizoen nu echt begint. Na een zachte start van oktober slaat het weer om: volgens Hart van Nederland wordt het vanaf donderdag 14 tot 15 graden, met buien en meer wind. Dan slaat de cv vaker aan, en juist dan merk je het meest wat je per kuub betaalt.

Variabel werd deze maand flink duurder

Bij een variabel contract gaan je tarieven elke maand mee met de markt. Daalt de prijs, dan heb je daar voordeel van. Stijgt hij, dan betaal je meer. Dat het gat met vast in één maand groeide van €323 naar €473, komt doordat variabele contracten in oktober flink duurder werden. Volgens Keuze.nl staat de gasprijs op de beurs nu rond de €72 per MWh. Halverwege september was dat nog €83.

Tussen leveranciers zijn de verschillen groot. Volgens de prijslijst van Energievergelijk.nl van 4 oktober vraagt Essent variabel €1,852 per kuub gas, Eneco €1,842 en Greenchoice €1,817. Er zijn ook variabele contracten die veel goedkoper zijn: Energie VanOns zit op €1,448 en Budget Thuis op €1,646. Het goedkoopste vaste jaarcontract kwam volgens Keuze.nl deze maand van Delta, met €1,68097 per kuub.

Wat het scheelt in een rijtjeshuis en een vrijstaand huis

Hoeveel jij scheelt, hangt vooral af van je woning. Volgens het Nibud gebruikt een tussenwoning gemiddeld zo'n 1.030 kuub gas per jaar en een vrijstaande woning 1.790 kuub. Wij rekenden het uit voor iemand met het variabele tarief van Essent die overstapt naar het goedkoopste vaste jaarcontract. Dat verschil is ruim 17 cent per kuub:

• Tussenwoning (1.030 m³): ongeveer €176 per jaar, alleen op gas.
• Vrijstaande woning (1.790 m³): ongeveer €306 per jaar, alleen op gas.

Daar komen stroom, vaste leveringskosten en eventuele welkomstkortingen nog bij. Delta geeft bij dit contract bijvoorbeeld €325 korting. Zit je juist bij een van de goedkopere variabele aanbieders, dan is het verschil een stuk kleiner, of heb je zelfs voordeel. Kijk dus naar je eigen tarief en niet alleen naar het gemiddelde.

Het meeste gas gebruik je tussen november en maart, precies wanneer de markt het krapst is.

De gasopslag heeft weinig reserve

Volgens Keuze.nl waren de Nederlandse gasopslagen op 4 oktober voor 61,1 procent gevuld. In het blog van 1 oktober stond nog 59,7 procent. Sinds 2019 stond de opslag op die datum alleen in 2021 lager. Ook het doel is lager dan anders: 64 procent, tegenover 80 procent in 2025 en 90 procent in 2024. Het Europese doel werd op 11 september verlaagd van 74 naar 64 procent. Gaat het vullen in hetzelfde tempo door, dan wordt 64 procent rond 12 oktober gehaald.

Keuze.nl verwacht dat 64 procent genoeg is voor een gemiddelde winter, maar dat er weinig ruimte overblijft als het koud wordt. Energievergelijk.nl legt uit wat dat betekent: is de opslag krap als het koud wordt, dan moeten handelaren duur gas bijkopen en stijgt de prijs. Met een variabel contract merk je dat binnen een maand op je tarief. Met een vast contract niet.

Eerlijk is eerlijk: vastzetten is nu duur

Vastzetten is geen koopje. Volgens Keuze.nl kost een vast jaarcontract nu gemiddeld €651 per jaar meer dan begin januari, bij een verbruik van 2.500 kWh stroom en 1.000 kuub gas. De site noemt de timing zelf ook slecht, maar komt toch tot dezelfde conclusie:

Toch is wachten op dit moment een nog groter risico.

Zet je nu vast en daalt de prijs later, dan heb je daar geen voordeel van. Wel weet je dan een jaar lang wat je betaalt in de maanden dat je het meeste stookt. Twijfel je over de looptijd? Volgens Keuze.nl is het goedkoopste eenjarige contract in oktober €142 per jaar goedkoper dan het goedkoopste driejarige contract. Bovendien zit je er korter aan vast.

Wanneer variabel toch logisch is

• Je variabele tarief ligt al onder dat van de goedkoopste vaste jaarcontracten. Die zijn er nog, al zijn het er weinig.
• Je kunt grote schommelingen opvangen. Volgens Keuze.nl kun je dan later alsnog vastzetten, als de markt rustiger is.
• Je kunt je verbruik sturen, bijvoorbeeld met een thuisbatterij of slim laden. Dan kan een dynamisch contract het overwegen waard zijn.

Zo stap je over zonder boete

Een variabel contract kun je altijd opzeggen. Er geldt een wettelijke opzegtermijn van 30 dagen, die ingaat op de dag na je opzegging. Je betaalt bij een variabel of dynamisch contract nooit een opzegvergoeding. Die mag een leverancier alleen vragen als je een vast contract tussentijds opzegt, en alleen als dat in je contract staat.

Was je vaste contract afgelopen en heb je het niet verlengd? Dan ben je vaak automatisch overgezet op een variabel tarief, zonder dat je dat gemerkt hebt. Als je overstapt, regelt je nieuwe leverancier meestal de opzegging bij je oude leverancier. Na het afsluiten heb je twee weken bedenktijd.

Wat je nu kunt doen

• Kijk in de app of op de site van je leverancier welk contract je hebt en wat je nu per kuub en per kWh betaalt.
• Vergelijk dat met vaste jaarcontracten. Kijk naar het tarief en niet alleen naar de welkomstkorting.
• Twijfel je? Kies dan voor één jaar in plaats van drie.
• Lees de voorwaarden goed. Installatievergelijken.nl waarschuwt voor verborgen escalatieclausules.
• Houd rekening met de opzegtermijn van ongeveer een maand. Wil je voor de echte kou vastzitten, regel het dan deze maand nog.
• Stook ook slimmer. In ons stuk Oktober begint en maak deze fout niet bij het aanzetten van je verwarming lees je waar de grootste besparing zit. Denk je aan een kacheltje? Lees dan eerst Elektrisch kacheltje aan om de cv te sparen? Sinds 1 oktober ben je daar bijna altijd duurder mee uit, op één situatie na (en die scheelt zo'n €95 per stookseizoen).

Microsoft Windows 11 26H2 has arrived, and, unfortunately, it's already picked up a known audio issue within weeks of release. The glitch also affects Windows 11 25H2 and 24H2, which share the same code branch. It relates to decoding AC-3 (Dolby Digital) audio and can cause the application using the decoder to crash abruptly or fail to start at all. Identified after the September 22 Windows update, the issue mostly impacts older applications, according to Microsoft. "Many modern applications do not use Windows for this type of encoding and therefore will not encounter this issue. "The code component involved in this issue is most commonly used in legacy applications that still rely on Windows built-in audio decoding." In summary – if your app has the temerity to use Windows built-in audio decoding for AC-3, you might have a problem. If it includes its own audio decoding component, you should be okay. "Affected applications may vary," explained Microsoft, "and can include games, media players, and certain productivity applications." There's also no fix as yet, so uninstalling is the only way to address it for now. To be clear, the AC-3 malfunction is not specific to Windows 11 26H2; the update preceded the release of the operating system's latest version by a week. It joins other known issues in 26H2, including other ongoing audio woes that have lingered in the list despite workarounds being available from Microsoft Support for Business. Microsoft currently has no mitigation for the AC-3 bug and offers little comfort to affected users: "We are working on releasing a resolution for this issue in a future Windows update." Acknowledging the latest trouble continues a run of misfortune for Microsoft. September's Patch Tuesday resulted in an out-of-band update to deal with RDP and Hyper-V issues. The update did not, however, fix all the audio problems it introduced, and the September 22 preview update has compounded the situation. Microsoft did not provide a timeline for resolving the latest issue. ®

Sam Altman-backed AI chip startup Volantis has a plan to break through the memory wall using light, and this time it's not just an IP play. Founded in 2022, the San Francisco-based startup is developing an AI accelerator that will use a photonic interposer to dramatically increase memory bandwidth without compromising on capacity. Volantis believes it can pack upwards of 10 TB of memory at speeds up to 240 TB/s onto a single massive package. This, it claims, should be enough to serve a 20 trillion parameter model at 10,000 tok/s per user. To do this, Volantis is taking a somewhat unusual approach. Rather than developing some novel compute architecture or memory technology, the company is focusing its efforts on the optical interposer. Everything else it plans to license from IP providers. "The differentiation is primarily coming from the optical interposer. So why don't we license absolutely everything we possibly can, even if it's not the highest performance in the world, because we're already biting off a lot of risk with the interposer and the integration," CEO Tapa Ghosh tells El Reg. The basic idea behind the chip, which Volantis is calling A-1, is that by using optical wave guides rather than electrical interconnects it can dramatically increase the amount of high-bandwidth memory per package. Because of the speeds at which most AI accelerator memory, like HBM, operate, and the size and number of data pins used, it needs to be as close to the compute as possible to minimize power consumption and maximize signal integrity. As a result the maximum capacity and bandwidth of modern GPUs is limited by the compute die's shoreline. That's the physical perimeter around the chip. For now, that means the cap is right around 432 GB on AMD's MI455X. Photonic interconnects can extend that much farther. Instead of a few millimeters the memory can be located a few centimeters away, eliminating the shoreline as a bottleneck. While HBM is useful as an example, we'll note Volantis hasn't said what memory tech its chip will use just yet. Volantis aims to achieve this using optical waveguides integrated into an interposer. Compute and memory designed or supplied by its partners will be packaged on top. If any of this sounds familiar, Volantis isn't the first to propose using silicon photonic interposers in this manner. As our sister site Next Platform has previously reported, both Lightmatter and Celestial AI have toyed with the idea in the past. In fact, we strongly suspect the idea of HBM-at-a-distance contributed to Marvell's decision to acquire Celestial for $5.5 billion. However, unlike either Celestial or Lightmatter, Volantis isn't trying to license its tech to other chipmakers. At least not yet. Instead it aims to develop a fully fledged inference chip. "It is, at least on day one, a way easier problem to demonstrate a solution that ships," Ghosh says. Another differentiator is the technology on which the startup's interposer is based. Rather than relying on external lasers, Volantis' design uses micro vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers — micro-VCSELs for short — and means the light source is integrated directly into the interposer. VCSELs aren't new by any means, but have faced criticism over their reliability. However, Volantis CTO Roy Meade tells us the technology has come a long way in recent years and by giving up some speed, significantly higher reliability can be achieved, a philosophy he describes as wide and efficient. "People are still constrained to this, what I would call a fat pipe point-to-point mentality, and naturally, if that's the case, you're going to go towards SerDes," he says. "If we were to go back and take a look at the benefits of a wide-and-efficient approach. HBM for example. Taking that same playbook makes a lot of sense." What Meade is getting at is that interconnects can achieve higher bandwidth in a couple different ways. The first is by increasing the link speed, and the second by using more links. For example an 800 Gbps link can be achieved using four 200 Gbps links or eight 100 Gbps links. In his example of HBM, higher bandwidth is achieved by using an extremely-wide bus but slower data rate per pin relative to other memory technologies. The same concept applies to Volantis' optical interposer-based accelerator. Power efficiency remains an open question that's dogged many photonics startups, but this may be less of a problem for Volantis because it's not trying to license its first-gen interposer tech. For its first product the company is targeting 1 picojoule per bit per 24 Gbps lane and a total system power of around 20kW. Volantis still has a ways to go before it tapes out its first production-ready chip, and will need to raise a fair bit more in venture capital to do that — far more than the $88 million it raised this week with the help of Lachy Groom, Abstract Ventures, and others. Ghosh is well aware of this. He says the funding will enable the company to scale from small-scale optical demonstrators to something more closely resembling the final product. The interposer alone is challenging enough, but then there is the complexity of actually integrating the IP they license. "Aggressively, we should aim for an MVP product in 12 to 18 months as our target," he tells us, noting that's to have a working prototype not volume production. ®

De wegwerkzaamheden draaien deze week vooral om bruggen. Zo wordt er gewerkt aan de Suurhoffbrug, de Botlekbrug en de Verkeersbrug Dordrecht. Ook de A13 en de A20 worden aangepakt.

Door een ongeval op de A29 tussen Barendrecht en afrit Numansdorp stond maandagavond richting het zuiden een flinke file. Een auto kantelde en blokkeerde enige tijd de rijbanen. Automobilisten werden zodoende via de vluchtstrook geleid.

Er zijn dagen dat wij Vader Magazine niet lezen, maar als hij wij het dan niet lezen, dan lezen we zeker de columns van zelfbenoemd semi-bn'er Armand Sag niet. Dat neemt niet weg dat we benieuwd zijn naar zijn volgende stukje over dat hij is veroordeeld tot veertien maanden onvoorwaardelijk vanwege het stalken van zijn ex. De zaak is nieuwswaardig omdat Armand niet alleen 'klassiek' stalkt, maar ook 116 rechtszaken tegen haar voerde, "buitensporig veel en lang procederen, zaken aanspannen met zeer geringe aanleiding en procederen op basis van niet-onderbouwde stellingen en soms ronduit valse voorwendselen". 116! Daar is Jan Roos een kleine jongen bij. Hoe dan ook, Armand was zelf niet bij rechtszaak, omdat hij naar Turkije is gevlucht. "In afwachting van de stalkingszaak moest hij in Nederland blijven, maar een jaar geleden mocht hij even naar Turkije om zijn stervende vader te bezoeken. Hij is niet meer teruggekeerd." Lekker dan. "Kortgeleden kwam naar buiten dat S. in 2022 is veroordeeld tot vier jaar cel wegens wapenhandel. Die straf heeft hij inmiddels uitgezeten." 見慣れた路地裏の奥へと足を踏み入れれば、冷たい壁に柔らかなネオンの光がにじむ。その瞬間、時が巻き戻されたかのように、かつてここで暮らしていた日々の記憶が鮮やかによみがえる。空気の匂いも、街角の静けさもあの頃のまま。ただ違うのは、かつての慌ただしい日常が、今は愛おしい郷愁へと変わっていること。歩くことは、自分自身の物語の一片に触れる時間。

A break from business travel turned into a long-overdue midnight stroll through Tokyo.
Wandering alone through familiar alleyways, the cool concrete met the gentle, fading glow of neon lights. In that single moment, time seemed to reverse, pulling me right back to the days I used to call this place home. The chill in the air and the quiet corners remained unchanged, yet my perspective had shifted—what used to be a hurried routine has settled into a tender nostalgia. A stroll, simply to reconnect with a piece of my own story.

As a child in Dashishan Village in southern China, Tang Shuo was afraid of snakes. He and several generations of the Tang family lived together in a small community and farmed the land, tending to crops and sheep and encountering the occasional reptile. In a vivid new painting on linen, the artist confronts this adolescent fear as he envisions himself grasping a sleek, black serpent, its recently shed skin lying beneath them.

Long interested in his ancestry and familial connection to the land, Tang once again journeys to his home territory for Borrowed History, his first solo exhibition in New York. This body of work extends the artist’s approach to questioning how our heritage informs our understanding of who we are and how we got here. Working from photographs of himself, Tang renders his likeness in a variety of positions he envisions his kin having occupied. There’s “The Migrant” carrying a small sack slung over his back, for example, and “The Settler” hoisting a tree trunk with tools and bones scattered in the background.

Tinged with magical realism—Tang cites Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude as an influence—the paintings reach backward to imagine the lives of the artist’s ancestors. Lush forests and candy-colored clouds envelop the scenes as a way to connect eras and generations. Nature and the terrain occupied, the artist suggests, is the throughline that tethers him to those who came before.

Although the specific scenes are fictional, Tang also considers his practice to be one of archiving “a world that is disappearing,” a statement says. “When he was a child, more than two hundred people lived in Dashishan; today, only a dozen or so remain. He continues to document the inhabitants and stories of the village and will eventually publish a book recording its history, which he describes as his ‘own bible.'”
