The Lost Children of Tuam review – deeply serious retelling of Ireland’s devastating tragedy

Monica Dolan is superb as the amateur historian who uncovered the horror of mass graves at a mother and baby home in this Liam Neeson produced drama

The children were never lost; if a baby goes missing, the police get called, social services become involved. The babies born at the mother and baby home run by nuns in the town of Tuam in County Galway were discarded: up to 796 tiny bodies thrown away, some in an old sewage tank. The amateur historian who uncovered the horror of the mass graves at the St Mary’s mother and baby home is Catherine Corless, superbly played here by Monica Dolan. Produced by Liam Neeson, and based on a 2017 New York Times article, The Lost Children of Tuam is a painful, devastating film. It feels scraped clean of anything unnecessary that might trivialise, fiction-ise or movie-ise what happened at St Mary’s, home to thousands of unmarried women and children between 1925 and 1961.

“It gets me out of the house,” Corless says when she starts a course in local history. She turns detective after becoming interested in the children from St Mary’s, and what she uncovers is that babies died at a rate of nearly one a fortnight at the home – from whooping cough, measles, malnutrition and other childhood illnesses. Eventually, she obtains nearly 800 death certificates, but cannot find burial records for the babies. There are no graves.

‘There’s always been a belittling of African women’: honouring history’s invisible heroines

Congolese photographer Pamela Tulizo uses costume and vivid scenery to celebrate women’s strength and give a new perspective on slavery

Pamela Tulizo’s latest series of photographs started with a question. “I asked myself, why are woman in my community in particular, and African woman in general, so strong?” says Tulizo, an artist and photographer from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. “Where does this strength come from?”

Growing up in Goma in eastern DRC, Tulizo was informed and inspired by the women she was surrounded by, including her mother, her sisters, her mother’s friends and her neighbours.

Women are placed at the centre of the series of 23 staged photographs

‘Pull the plug’: protesters resort to direct action against AI firms

Campaign groups report surge in membership after a spate of AI safety alerts and apocalyptic warnings

In a bar below Waterloo Bridge, a cell of a fast-growing anti-AI protest movement met last week to plot their latest move: disrupting a tech industry dinner being addressed by a senior executive from the chip maker Nvidia.

Emma, a 28-year-old bartender, had never before taken direct action and was the most nervous of the four plotters from Pull The Plug, one of a growing number of AI-focused campaign groups around the world.

Burnham’s surprise EU-turn could deliver the Tories from a generational mess | Gaby Hinsliff

Badenoch would never have reopened the door on Brexit, but now that the PM has, it suits the Conservatives to let him walk through it

There’s no way on earth it should have worked, but somehow he may have got away with it. Last week, the actor Richard E Grant became the first contestant on The Traitors – a show whose only unbreakable rule is never to let anyone know you’re the murderer – to gleefully announce within minutes of being selected that yes, haha, it’s him! Yet even then many of his fellow contestants seemed to like him too much to recoil.

And that, roughly speaking, is now Andy Burnham’s Brexit strategy. After years of Labour politicians – not least Burnham himself, in the Makerfield byelection, without which he would not now be prime minister – trying to hide their real feelings about Brexit, Burnham has decided just to tell the truth and hope people roll with it. Leaving hasn’t worked, he said bluntly last week in Liverpool, and Britain should consider the alternatives. If you’re a leaver who suspects him of being out to unwind Brexit – well, yes, he is. This bold strategy seemingly surprised much of his own cabinet, an early lesson in how he likes to work for those who hadn’t studied his Manchester operation closely enough. But the oddly muted initial response to what would once have been a seismic shock suggests it’s wrongfooting some opponents, too.

‘It really hammers people’: Scottish islanders hit by highest diesel prices in UK

Inhabitants of the Hebrides and Shetland tell of how fuel costs are putting the squeeze on commuting, services, food and more

As fuel prices reach the highest level in the UK since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Scottish islanders are feeling the pain more than most. On the mainland, the price of diesel has soared to a record high of 200.01p a litre, bringing the cost of filling an average family car to more than £110, according to the RAC. Petrol has risen by a third since the start of the Iran war at the end of February, averaging 174.71p – increasing to 195.64p in motorway service areas.

In the Hebrides and Shetland, prices at the forecourt have jumped even higher, with some fuel stations selling diesel for more than 220p a litre during the initial rise.

Jose Pizarro’s recipe for poached pear and almond tart with PX caramel

This tart uses the richness of red vermut to bring together the sweet and the nutty for a flavour explosion

In Spain, vermut is traditionally enjoyed as an aperitif, while pedro ximénez is often poured at the end of a meal, alongside dessert or a piece of cheese, say. In this tart, however, they come together to tell the story of the Spanish table in the form of pudding. We have a wonderful tradition of fortified wines, and while lighter sherries often hog the limelight, vermut and pedro ximénez deserve just as much attention. They’re both made from wine, but each brings something completely different to a dish. Here, vermut, which is infused with herbs and spices, gently perfumes the pears, while PX, with its rich raisin, fig and caramel notes, introduces a flavour that’s impossible to resist.

Tigray rebel groups ‘forcibly recruiting boys as young as 15’ as fighting spreads

Civilians try to flee as men and boys rounded up on streets by new alliance as Ethiopia conflict erupts again

As renewed fighting has threatened a fresh humanitarian crisis in the northern region of Ethiopia, reports are emerging that a new alliance of armed groups in Tigray has been forcibly recruiting men and boys to its ranks.

Renewed conflict erupted on 23 September between Ethiopia’s federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which rules the region, shattering the fragile Pretoria peace agreement signed between the two sides in November 2022.

Scientists find planet made on new matter recipe, and it formed after a Red Giant ate a solar system

When yellow dwarf stars like our sun die, they swell to an enormous size and destroy their inner planets by either crushing them with massive gravity or evaporating them with astounding heat. While these suns later settle down to become a white dwarf, the process is nearly always game over for planets in an inner solar system. Or maybe not, according to a paper published on Monday titled “Discovery of a second-generation planet candidate accreting onto a white dwarf.” As explained by NASA’s Hubble Mission team, the paper’s authors pored over Hubble Space Telescope observations of white dwarf star HS 0209+0832 from 1999. According to the paper, data from those scans “revealed the presence of carbon, aluminum, silicon, calcium, titanium, nickel and zinc in the atmosphere, as well as ~100 lines that could not be identified.” The authors of this paper used new techniques to identify the mystery matter, and concluded that there’s plenty of the element niobium present in what looks like a gas giant orbiting HS 0209+0832. In NASA’s post, co-author Nicholas Stone, a theoretical astrophysicist at the University of Wisconsin, pointed out that “Niobium and other elements heavier than iron are astronomically special because, unlike many common elements, they are not formed in the cores of stars by thermonuclear fusion.” “Instead, these heavy elements can only be synthesized in the exotic conditions that briefly emerge inside dying stars. The presence of niobium is a signpost of these ‘death’ throes, and the expulsion of the dying star's innards into space.” Finding niobium is also notable because, as the paper explains, “the canonical rock-forming elements [are] silicon and iron.” The paper explains that its authors compared the material observed at HS 0209+0832 with all known examples of rocky material around white dwarfs, and to all meteorites in our Solar System, but could find “no compositional matches.” That finding suggests that the niobium-rich gas giant at HS 0209+0832 represents both a secondary planet – which are rare – and a body composed of material we’ve not previously seen becoming a planet. It also shows that planets can form close to a star after the hellish red giant phase. Oh, and let’s not forget that HS 0209+0832 is also an exoplanet, a class of body humanity first spotted in only 1992. The paper suggests the niobium gas giant is about the size of Jupiter, but that the white dwarf is blasting away its atmosphere and perhaps creating “a comet-like tail of material that would form a disk around the white dwarf star and fall back on to its surface, leading to Hubble detecting the niobium when studying the star” Co-author Jamie Williams, from the Department of Physics at the University of Warwick, told NASA he thinks the niobium world will stick around. “If the second-generation planet is there, I think it is likely to survive. Eventually the white dwarf will cool and then maintain a consistent temperature, with the planet in its stable habitable zone for millions of years,” Williams said. ®
