AMSTELVEEN (ANP) - Bondscoach Raoul Ehren is tevreden dat zijn hockeysters met nog één groepswedstrijd te gaan al de halve finales van het WK hebben behaald. "We hebben deze wedstrijd benaderd als een kwartfinale en winnen betekende de halve finale, dus we moesten gewoon winnen", zei hij over de zege van Oranje op India.

"Uiteindelijk schieten we nog twee keer op de paal en werden er vier ballen van de lijn gehaald en we winnen netjes met 2-0", vat Ehren de wedstrijd samen.

"Door naar de volgende wedstrijd, wat een gekke wedstrijd wordt. Zo ver in het toernooi spelen we een wedstrijd die er voor ons eigenlijk niet toe doet", kijkt hij vooruit naar de laatste groepswedstrijd tegen China. "Voor de andere teams in de poule is het een cruciale pot, maar je kent ons, we gaan die wedstrijd hier in een vol stadion niet op 80 procent spelen. We klappen er vol bovenop zondag."

WASHINGTON (ANP/RTR) - Het Amerikaanse hooggerechtshof heeft bepaald dat president Donald Trump voorlopig mag doorgaan met de bouw van een balzaal aan het Witte Huis. Twee lagere rechtbanken zeiden eerder dat al het werk boven de grond moest worden gepauzeerd.

De rechtszaak is aangespannen door National ⁠Trust for Historic Preservation, een non-profitorganisatie die zich inzet voor het behoud van monumentale gebouwen. Die klaagde Trumps regering vorig jaar aan, nadat die de oostvleugel van het Witte Huis had gesloopt en een begin had gemaakt aan de bouw van een grote balzaal, zonder daarvoor goedkeuring van het Congres te vragen.

Het project bestaat naast een bovengrondse balzaal uit een uitgebreid ondergronds complex. Er komen volgens Trump ook onder meer schuilkelders, medische voorzieningen en andere veiligheidsvoorzieningen. Die zijn volgens hem "allemaal met elkaar verbonden als een groot, duur en zeer complex geheel". Hij stelt dat de verbouwing noodzakelijk is voor de veiligheid.

Chief justice signs temporary order to permit work while court considers emergency appeal from administration

The US supreme court has allowed Donald Trump to continue construction of his controversial White House ballroom for now, temporarily pausing a lower court order that would halt much of the project.

Supreme court chief justice John Roberts signed a temporary order on Friday, permitting work to continue while the court considers an emergency appeal from Trump’s administration.

The Duchess of Sussex is said to be discussing a return to acting in the third season of Netflix’s hit crime series

The Duchess of Sussex is in talks to make her acting return in Netflix’s hit series The Gentlemen.

According to Variety, Meghan is in discussions to join the third season which has yet to receive an official greenlight. The Gentlemen is a spin-off from the 2019 crime comedy of the same name with Guy Ritchie acting as creator of both.

After years of refusing to adopt tap-to-pay technology in its stores, retail giant Walmart announced today that it is finally accepting payments via both Apple Pay and Google Pay. The rollout begins August 24 at select Walmart and Sam's Club locations and is expected to reach all stores by year-end. It will then expand to fuel stations by mid-2027. TechCrunch reports: The news is a surprise, as Walmart has long refused to adopt the ubiquitous payment technology to instead promote its own in-house solutions, like Walmart Pay and Scan-and-Go. In years past, Walmart even teamed up with other big retailers in an attempt to take down Apple Pay entirely with an alternative mobile payment system of their own, called CurrentC. The effort failed and was shut down back in 2016.

All the while, Walmart customers have begged the company to support modern tap-and-pay technology, like Apple Pay, which is now accepted at 85% of retailers across the U.S., including most larger stores.

For Walmart, the decision reads as a defeat. As one of the world's largest retailers, it believed it could push customers to its own payment solutions despite the growing adoption of Apple Pay and others of its kind. Ultimately, it had to admit that it was disadvantaging its own customers in the process.
