What's the former "deep state" up to these days?

Democratic Party runs more than 60 military-intelligence candidates for Congress. If, as appears likely based on pre-election polling, the Democratic Party makes significant gains in November, the military-intelligence "caucus" inside the Democratic delegation could double or triple in size. They will vastly outnumber the relative handful of self-proclaimed "democratic socialists" to whom the corporate media has given so much attention, and whom pseudo-left groups cite as evidence that the Democratic Party can be pushed to the left.

As we have argued in previous such studies, the large number of military-intelligence operatives entering politics as Democratic Party candidates is the result of a two-way process. The Democratic Party leadership is openly encouraging the recruitment of such candidates, as it seeks ever-closer ties to the Pentagon and CIA. And large sections of the military-intelligence apparatus view the Democratic Party as their preferred political vehicle, in opposition to the erratic policies of Donald Trump and particularly his pullback from direct involvement in the US-NATO war against Russia in Ukraine. Hat-tip to jeffburges in this thread. Why, besides NATO and Ukraine, would former military intelligence officers run for office as Democrats? Apropos of nothing, here are some other recent headlines: Report: Trump Used Grok to Help Talk Him Into Illegal Invasion of Venezuela. President Donald Trump was reportedly encouraged by Elon Musk's AI chatbot, Grok, to carry out his illegal invasion of Venezuela during an hourslong session with the chatbot just weeks before the attack this January. In December 2025, Trump asked Grok questions for hours during a secret visit to the White House by Musk, per new reporting by Time Magazine. How Jared Kushner's firm's investment in an Israeli company could be a major conflict of interest. At the same time Jared Kushner has acted as a key negotiator in the war in Gaza, his private equity company, Affinity Partners, has held the largest stake in an Israeli firm backing businesses involved in Israel's military campaigns, a CNN investigation has found. Jared Kushner is at the center of Trump's corruption. On Monday, Paramount Skydance — run by David Ellison, a billionaire Trump has openly urged to reshape the news industry in his favor — launched an unprecedented bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery by initiating a hostile takeover after losing an earlier bidding contest to Netflix. Paramount's offer draws heavily from Kushner's investment firm, Affinity Partners, and from the sovereign wealth funds of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar... Not even Rupert Murdoch's right-wing media empire was capitalized by foreign monarchies seeking political leverage.

Remembering Irene Hasenberg Butter (1930-2026)

Dr. Irene Butter (December 11, 1930 – October 2, 2026) As described on her website, Dr. Butter was a Holocaust survivor, acclaimed educator, and global human rights advocate. She dedicated her life to educating millions on the dangers of hatred, indifference, and discrimination, championing the enduring philosophy: "Never a bystander." May her memory be for a blessing.

More from her website: born in Berlin, Germany, in 1930, Dr. Butter's childhood was disrupted by the Nazi regime. Her family fled to Amsterdam in 1936, later coming under Nazi occupation following the 1940 invasion of the Netherlands. In 1943, her family was deported to the Westerbork transit camp and subsequently to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Dr. Butter survived the war alongside her mother and brother, eventually immigrating to the United States in December 1945 as a 15-year-old refugee. Dr. Butter went on to serve for decades as a distinguished Professor of Public Health at the University of Michigan, specializing in health economics, women's healthcare, and global health workforce policies. After remaining silent about her childhood trauma for forty years, Dr. Butter began speaking publicly about her experiences—including her time in Bergen-Belsen alongside her childhood neighbor, Anne Frank. Recognizing her moral duty to bear witness, she addressed middle schools, high schools, universities, and international community halls, speaking directly to youth about hope, human dignity, and the responsibility to confront intolerance at its earliest stages. Dr. Butter's international legacy as an author, peacebuilder, and human rights advocate includes numerous landmark initiatives and honors. Her many accomplishments included writing a memoir, Shores Beyond Shores: From Holocaust to Hope, My True Story, and co-founding Zeitouna, an Arab-Jewish women's dialogue group based in Ann Arbor.

ā€˜My poetry won me asylum’: Cecilia VicuƱa on exile life in ā€˜sad’ Britain after Pinochet’s coup

Five decades after convincing judges she’d be killed if she returned to Chile, the artist is back with a politically charged retrospective in the country she grew to love

Cecilia VicuƱa was 24 when she first arrived in London. She had come from Santiago on a British Council scholarship to study at the Slade School of Art, and her stay was supposed to be so brief that she didn’t even unpack her suitcase.

Then, in September 1973, General Augusto Pinochet’s military coup overthrew Chile’s democratically elected president, Salvador Allende. VicuƱa was one of a handful of Chilean students in London immediately expelled from their universities and expected to leave Britain. At a Home Office hearing, her pro-bono lawyers argued that she would be killed if she returned to Chile, and showed the judges her recently published art and poetry book, Saborami, which documented the aftermath of the coup. The judges granted her asylum.

NGOs say Israel bombed a journalist and appeared to attack ambulances trying to aid her – explainer

Journalist Amal Khalil was killed in April in what colleagues described as a sustained attack by Israeli forces. Rescuers attempted to dig her out of the rubble of a building that had been targeted by Israeli forces, who had also prevented them from providing life-saving assistance.

Beirut-based Guardian correspondent Will Christou explains how investigations by Human Rights Watch (HRW), Amnesty International and Legal Agenda show that Israel deliberately and directly attacked Khalil and her colleague Zeinab Faraj, with apparent knowledge that they were journalists. The organisations called for the attacks to be investigated as war crimes, while HRW called for states to halt arms sales to Israel and put targeted sanctions on Israeli officials responsible for ongoing crimes.

Deliberately attacking journalists is a war crime. Israel has killed at least 15 journalists in Lebanon and 210 in Gaza since 2023, according to the UN human rights office.

Israel said it 'regrets any harm caused to journalists', and that they were killed 'as part of a series of events' during which two Hezbollah military operatives were killed

Amok Island’s Geometric Murals Teem with Vibrant Local Flora and Fauna

Amok Island’s Geometric Murals Teem with Vibrant Local Flora and Fauna

This year, an international team of scientists announced the discovery of a new species of wild cat in Bolivia, and research initiatives like Ocean Census continue to document hundreds of new marine species annually. Yet species are probably disappearing faster than we can find them. It’s difficult to gauge what goes extinct every year when we’re still so far from comprehending just how many different types of organisms there are in the first place. Possibly thousands of species disappear every year, however, and at a rate accelerated by human-caused habitat loss, pollution, and climate change.

For Amok Island, who was born in Amsterdam and is currently based in Fremantle, Western Australia, the fragility of the earth’s biodiversity plays a central role in vibrant, large-scale murals.

Across his home state and other parts of the world, Amok Island portrays mammals, crustaceans, flowers, and more that reflect creatures and specimens found in those regions. Flocks of migrating birds swoop across industrial infrastructure, flowers bloom on community buildings, and roosters, butterflies, and cats adorn walls in urban spaces. Showcasing the beauty of living things that locals can learn about and enjoy nearby, Amok Island shines a light on the continued importance of conservation.
