Much as I love camping, I understand why so many recoil at the idea of spending their holidays sleeping in a field and sharing bathroom facilities with several hundred other people, plus the local spider population. But, having just enjoyed a week in Devon in a one-person tent, with an elderly terrier, I have to come out in praise of campsite cookery. Though we ate in some superb pubs, the meals that brought the most joy were the ones we threw together from the small village shops we passed. (Shout out to the Holne Community Shop and Tearoom for being so well stocked – and to the kind fellow shopper who gave me and the dog a lift back to the campsite with our loot.) It gave me pause for thought about the kind of meals you actually cook when camping … and by camping, I don’t mean sleeping in a van kitted out with a fridge and a cooker, nice as that looked while struggling with guy ropes. I mean when your only equipment is what you can carry on your back: ie a small gas stove or a disposable barbecue, a knife and a spork.

Joe Woodhouse has some lovely ideas here, and there’s plenty of advice in this collection of recipes from the likes of Ben Tish and Melissa Hemsley. But, for me, the trick is always to focus on one key ingredient that doesn’t need to be kept too cool (this will, of course, vary depending on where you’re camping), and base all your meals around it until it runs out, at which point you’ll need to track down a new one. Ours, on this trip, were chorizo – the cured, rather than the cooking kind – and feta. With those two flavour bombs, and the olive oil, chilli sauce and salt that should be on everyone’s packing list anyway, you can make a feast from almost anything you find en route. Claudia Roden’s spicy potatoes from Rioja would have been ideal, as would Thomasina Miers’ piperade with baked eggs and crispy chorizo, though we might have had to lose a couple of the spices in favour of Tabasco.

Newcastle have agreed a £51.5m deal with Freiburg that should see the Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi swap the Bundesliga for the Premier League.

The 20-year-old, who has shone during this summer’s World Cup, is expected to sign a long-term contract at St James’ Park but the transfer will not be finalised while Switzerland remain in the World Cup. Manzambi, who has been widely coveted this summer, is currently struggling with a minor knee injury and Murat Yakin, Switzerland’s head coach, is unsure as to whether he will recover in time for the quarter-final against Argentina on Sunday.

Microsoft has warned admins that Outlook Web Access (OWA) Light is set to be disabled and removed with the August 2026 Exchange Server update. The announcement applies to the on-premises version of Exchange Server. The feature was deprecated on August 19, 2024, but some users might still be caught off guard when the plug is pulled once and for all. OWA Light – not to be confused with the stripped-down Android app Outlook Lite, which was retired earlier this year – is a simple web client for Exchange. Shorn of the fripperies of its heftier sibling, it was introduced with Exchange Server 2007 as a fallback for users of unsupported browsers (initially, anything that wasn't Internet Explorer 6 or 7). At the time, the product manager for Exchange referred to it as "The Product Formerly Known as OWA Basic." Basic it was, but it had enough for most people – there were inbox and calendar views. Users couldn't get weekly or monthly calendar views, access shared mailboxes or calendars, or create or modify tasks, but it worked pretty much everywhere. Microsoft noted this in its latest announcement: "OWA Light served customers well for many years. It was designed for older browsers, slower connections, and scenarios where a simplified web interface helped users access mail in environments that could not support the full Outlook Web App experience." Things have moved on during the last couple of decades. The full-fat Outlook on the web experience supports Edge, Firefox, and Chrome, as well as Safari on Apple devices. Even Firefox and Chrome on Linux have been given a nod, although Microsoft noted "some features may not be available." OWA Light is looking a little long in the tooth these days, and with OWA requiring frequent updates to stave off attackers, keeping the service running for a dwindling number of users is difficult to justify. "Maintaining a separate legacy OWA Light experience increases complexity," Microsoft wrote. "Each additional content rendering path, control surface, and compatibility layer must be evaluated as we strengthen defenses against modern web threats." And so, as soon as next month, a service that first saw the light of day at the time of Windows Vista (and whose predecessor goes back to the days of XP) will be disabled and removed. ®

A cross-party group of MPs has told the government to start planning for life after Palantir, arguing the NHS should use a 2027 break clause in its Federated Data Platform (FDP) contract to find a replacement rather than doubling down on one of Whitehall's most contentious tech deals. In a letter to Health Innovation Minister Preet Kaur Gill, the House of Commons Health and Social Care Committee said the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) should begin preparing to replace the FDP when the contract reaches its break clause in February 2027. Rather than waiting until the deadline looms, MPs want ministers to begin assessing alternatives now so a replacement could be in place by March 2027 if they decide not to continue with Palantir. MPs reached that conclusion after grilling ministers and NHS England officials last month over the platform's supposed benefits. Since then, NHS England has quietly rewritten its website, dropping claims that the FDP was responsible for cutting waiting lists and boosting the number of procedures. It now says it "cannot therefore draw conclusions about cause and effect as other variables have not been controlled for." The committee said there remains "serious mistrust" of Palantir among the public, warning that the company's involvement with NHS data could discourage patients from allowing their information to be used. MPs argued that loss of confidence could undermine the NHS's wider push to make better use of patient data across the health service. The committee also seized on the government's admission that some NHS trusts already have capabilities beyond those offered by the FDP. If that's the case, MPs argue, there's no reason Palantir should be treated as the only option for the rest of the health service. MPs are now asking the DHSC to set out what assessment it will carry out before deciding whether to exercise the break clause, as well as what advice it has received on replacing the platform by March 2027. Health and Social Care Committee chair Layla Moran said: "Little by little, the government's arguments for sticking with the FDP has [sic] unravelled. So in the interest of public confidence in the NHS and the security of their medical information, we believe it is time to crack on with preparations to find an alternative in time for spring 2027." "The FDP may have had some advantages, but there are also downsides and it is evidently not the only show in town," she added. The recommendation adds to the pressure on ministers over the future of Palantir's NHS deal. Another Commons committee has already urged the government to use the 2027 break clause, while campaigners and privacy advocates have spent months questioning everything from procurement and transparency to whether the platform's claimed benefits can be backed by evidence. The DHSC did not respond to The Register’s questions, and whether it’s ready to start shopping for a Palantir successor remains unclear. ®

Het gevoel van eigenwaarde van Jelmer (30) is compleet afhankelijk van hoe hij een afgezwaaide bal terugpasst naar een groep voetballende kinderen, ontdekt hij als hij door het Amsterdamse Vondelpark loopt en een bal zijn kant op rolt. Als hij deze bal niet soepel en op maat hun kant op kan trappen, weet hij vrij zeker dat hij – terecht – al zijn zelfrespect verliest, denkt hij als hij een aanloopje neemt.

“Ik ben toch geen loser? Welke volwassen man kan nou geen pass over 25 meter geven?”, mompelt hij terwijl hij zijn aanloop staakt en nog eens diep in- en uitademt. “Het voelt een beetje kinderachtig als dat niet lukt, alsof je niet kan koken of de Belastingaangifte niet begrijpt.” Jelmer ziet hoe het groepje kinderen vol verwachting en nieuwsgierigheid naar hem kijkt. Inmiddels staren ook meerdere voorbijgangers naar hem. Hij heeft al jaren geen bal meer getrapt.

“Waarom heb je nou weer een spijkerbroek en nette schoenen aan”, sist hij tegen zichzelf. “Denk je dat David Beckham skinny jeans draagt als hij in het park een bal moet terugpassen? Sukkel. Oké, focus. Daar gaat-ie.” Jelmer ademt diep uit en neemt nogmaals een aanloop. Het loopje voelt onnatuurlijk, alsof hij een zak aardappelen op zijn rug meetorst. Hij draait in met zijn heup, houdt zijn linkerarm in een onnatuurlijke houding gestrekt – dat deed hij vroeger toch nooit? – en ramt de bal finaal en met alle kracht die hij heeft over de groep kinderen heen. Hij ziet nog net hoe de bal in het water landt.

Jelmer voelt zijn laatste restje zelfrespect wegvloeien.

BREDA (ANP) - Erwin van E. (62), de voormalige vloggende wijkagent uit Tilburg die verdacht wordt van het jarenlang doorspelen van vertrouwelijke informatie uit politiesystemen, komt voorlopig op vrije voeten. De rechtbank in Breda besloot donderdag zijn voorarrest te schorsen. Ook zijn vriendin en medeverdachte Kaylee van O. (24) komt met ingang van vrijdagmiddag vrij. Ze zaten sinds 8 januari vast.

Van E. overtuigde de rechtbank dat er in de gevangenis in Krimpen aan den IJssel een aanslag op zijn leven is beraamd. In een van de werkzalen is woensdag een zelfgemaakt steekwapen gevonden, vertelde hij.

"Buiten loop ik geen gevaar meer, maar binnen loop ik wel gevaar", zei Van E. De rechtbank volgde zijn redenering en noemde de huidige detentie een bijzondere omstandigheid. "Het maakt dat detentie voor u meer belastend is dan voor een gemiddelde verdachte."

Het Openbaar Ministerie verzette zich tegen de vrijlating, evenals de advocaten van de slachtoffers.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - Verschillende aanbieders van vakantiehuisjes zien een toename van het aantal boekingen na de uitschakeling van Oranje op het WK voetbal. Mensen stemmen hun vakantie steeds meer af op de actualiteit en weersvoorspellingen, zegt bestuurder Robert van Veen van Natuurhuisje.

Boekingsplatform Natuurhuisje kreeg in de zeven dagen na de uitschakeling 55 procent meer boekingen binnen voor de maand juli dan een week eerder. Het platform biedt 19.000 vakantieverblijven aan in de natuur, waarvan het merendeel in Nederland en België. Deze zomer had het WK een "opvallend grote invloed" op het boekingsgedrag, stelt Van Veen.

Europarcs zag het aantal boekingen met 34 procent toenemen in de eerste week van juli vergeleken met de laatste week van juni. Het Nederlands elftal werd op 30 juni uitgeschakeld door Marokko. Het is niet te zeggen dat de toename alleen daaraan te danken is, benadrukt een woordvoerder. Na het EK in 2024 was volgens hem wel een vergelijkbaar effect te zien.

STUTTGART (ANP) - Porsche heeft in de eerste helft van 2026 veel minder auto's verkocht dan in dezelfde periode een jaar eerder. Vooral in Noord-Amerika, China en in thuisland Duitsland daalde het aantal verkochte Porsches. De bekende Porsche 911 werd wel meer verkocht dan vorig jaar in deze periode.

Porsche verkocht 122.306 voertuigen, een daling van 16 procent. In Noord-Amerika, nog steeds de grootste afzetmarkt van het merk, daalde het aantal verkopen met 13 procent. Porsche had hier naar eigen zeggen last van het aflopen van fiscale voordelen voor elektrische en hybride voertuigen. In China daalde het aantal verkopen met 32 procent en in thuismarkt Duitsland was de daling 6 procent. Ook in de rest van Europa nam het aantal verkopen van Porsche af (-14 procent).

De bekendste Porsche, de 911-modellenreeks, bleef populair. Er werden 19 procent meer van verkocht in het eerste halfjaar van 2026 dan in de eerste helft van 2025. Het meest verkochte model is de Cayenne, met 38.141 geleverde auto's.

Mensen, alsof dit landje nog niet genoeg onder vuur lag is er sprake van dreiging uit een nieuwe hoek. We lezen in de Telegraaf dat we te maken hebben met het oprukkende probleem van moorden op bestelling, een probleem dat met name komt overwaaien uit Zweden. Deze week heeft de politie twee Zweedse jongens opgepakt die zich in een Amsterdams hotel schuilhielden, waar ze in een kamer vol wapens een liquidatie voorbereidden. Vermoedelijk kon de politie de heren op tijd in de kraag vatten omdat de Zweedse pistolen eerst aan de hand van een zeer ingewikkelde handleiding in elkaar moesten worden gezet. In het onderzoek naar de mislukte afrekening zijn ook nog drie 18-jarige mannen uit Amsterdam, Sassenheim en Hoofddorp en een 25-jarige man uit Utrecht aangehouden. Maar die Zweden jongens. Wij roepen het al jaren, pas toch op voor die enge Zweden (hierboven afgebeeld, red.), met hun knäckebröd, hun ABBA en hun Pippi Langkous. LEVENSGEVAARLIJK VOLK.
