Life has colonised every corner of the planet by evolving ingenious survival strategies but these are increasingly being overwhelmed by destructive human activities, this year’s red list of endangered species has revealed.

Many snails, limpets and clams have adapted to life at crushing depths in the oceans on hydrothermal vents where water temperatures can reach 450C (842F). But an assessment for the red list found that two-thirds of the hundreds of mollusc species found only on deep sea vents were at risk of extinction because of deep-sea mining.

It captures the imagination because the jeopardy ratchets up a few notches and stomachs begin to churn. Amnesty says pyre to be burned on Friday in Moygashel is ‘blatant attempt to stir up anti-Muslim hatred’

A loyalist bonfire in Northern Ireland featuring an effigy of a mosque has been condemned as an incitement to hatred.

The effigy sits atop a tower of pallets that is to be burned on Friday night in the County Tyrone village of Moygashel as part of wider loyalist commemorations. Placards beneath the display read “secure our borders” and “end the threat of radical Islam”.

As sales of sparkling wine continue to soar, one aromatic French fizz is worthy of particular appreciation

It was in the middle of the pandemic that I ceased stashing sparkling wine. There were no special occasions, or occasions at all, really, save for daily episodes of the BBC’s Baby Club with two cabin-fevered infants and the weekly thrill of a veg box. I might have been stockpiling chickpeas, but I was cracking bubbles open willy-nilly because, well, why not?

And I never stopped. The unrelentingly grim news agenda seems as good a reason as any to pop a cork these days, because sparkling wine invariably lifts my spirits. And I’m not alone in drinking more of it: according to a study by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine, sparkling wine sales have grown faster than any other style in recent years, rising in value from €2.3bn to €8.5bn over the past quarter-century. (That said, I might be an outlier on the timing front, because 2020 figures also point to a dip in sales)

PAU (ANP) - Wielrenner Arvid de Kleijn is afgestapt in de Tour de France. De 32-jarige Nederlandse sprinter van Tudor gaf na ongeveer 50 kilometer in de zesde etappe op.

De Kleijn kwam in de derde etappe al op grote achterstand binnen en kon woensdag in de vijfde etappe in de slotfase niet bij het peloton blijven. Hij reed in de zesde etappe na de beklimming van de vierde categorie op achterstand.

Voor De Kleijn was het zijn eerste deelname aan de Ronde van Frankrijk. Hij is de vijfde uitvaller in deze Tour.

De Kleijn is na Alex Molenaar de tweede Nederlander die moest opgeven. De 26-jarige Tourdebutant ging donderdag niet meer van start in de zesde etappe, nadat hij een dag eerder hard onderuit was gegaan en daarbij een breuk in het middenhandsbeentje van zijn rechterhand had opgelopen.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - De provincie Zuid-Holland mag de damherten in de Hoeksche Waard niet afschieten. De rechtbank heeft opnieuw geoordeeld dat de onderbouwing voor het doden van de hele populatie onvoldoende is. Vijf jaar geleden hield de rechter het afschieten van de dieren in het plattelandsgebied ook al tegen.

De provincie wil de ruim veertig damherten in de Hoeksche Waard doden. Ze zouden schade aanrichten aan landbouwgewassen en de verkeersveiligheid in gevaar brengen. Ook zou er risico op inteelt zijn. Volgens Zuid-Holland gaat het om een groep verwilderde damherten, die zich in de Hoeksche Waard vestigde nadat in 2000 drie dieren waren ontsnapt uit een hertenkamp. Van nature komen ze niet in dit gebied voor.

De rechter vond in 2021 de argumenten van de provincie onvoldoende. Zuid-Holland kwam in 2024, na extra onderzoek, toch weer tot de conclusie dat het doden van alle dieren de enige optie is. Dierenbeschermers spanden opnieuw een rechtszaak aan, die het afschieten nu wederom tegenhoudt.

Een frisse linkse stem in het debat blijkt rechts. Dat stellen onderzoekers. “We dachten: eindelijk een keer iemand op de linkerzijde die kritische noten plaatst bij migratie, feminisme, het debat over trans mensen in zorg, de kritiek op Israël, ‘woke-isme’ en racisme.”

Maar hoe meer kritische noten de onderzoekers voorbij zagen komen, hoe meer ze begonnen te geloven dat de persoon op links eigenlijk rechts was. “Hij bekeerde zich tot het katholicisme, had het steeds minder over gelijkheid en is nu geloof ik ook een nieuwe partij aan het oprichten waarin kritiek op migratie een speerpunt is.”

Volgens de frisse linkse stem zelf is de bestempeling tot ‘rechts’ juist weer zo’n voorbeeld van doorgeslagen zuiverheid op links. “Daar heb je dat vingertje weer”, zegt ze. “En wat betekenen ‘links en rechts’ in deze context überhaupt nog? Echt weer die muffige linkse reflex om zichzelf te definiëren aan de hand van waar het tegen is, zonder nou eens die kritische noten te plaatsen. Nou ja, eigenlijk precies zoals ik het opschreef in mijn column voor Elsevier.”
