"It is not acceptable to kill people because they are gay."

The Incident at Little River The 1981 brutal crime that catalyzed the LGBTQ movement in North Carolina has never been fully chronicled—until now. (CW for anti-LGBTQ violence and language)

The community was ready for a more assertive strategy after the brutality at Little River. As Debbie Swanner, one of Durham's lesbian activists, wrote at the time: "Only a unified, radical, and most importantly, organized lesbian/gay liberation movement can successfully combat the forces against us." At noon on Good Friday, around 70 people gathered for a vigil. Many wore pink triangles to connect Little River to the Nazis' murder of homosexuals 40 years earlier. "Germany started this way!!" read one handwritten sign. Others invoked the Greensboro Massacre and the [still] unsolved killings of Black boys in Atlanta.

Margaret Hamilton passes away at 90

Margaret Hamilton, a profoundly influential computer scientist best known for leading the software engineering team at MIT's Instrumentation Lab during NASA's Apollo program, died on Sep. 30. She was 90. A computing pioneer who authored over 130 publications, Hamilton helped to establish software engineering as a dedicated discipline. She worked at MIT from 1959 until the mid-1970s, after which she became a successful computing entrepreneur and CEO.

You probably know her from the photo of her standing next to the stack of books containing the Apollo guidance software she and her MIT team wrote.

Patricia Krenwinkel, former Manson follower, granted parole for third time

The 78-year-old has spent nearly six decades in prison and California governor has overturned last two parole grants

Patricia Krenwinkel, a former Charles Manson follower, was granted parole on Tuesday after nearly six decades in prison for her role in the infamous Tate-LaBianca murders in Los Angeles.

This is the third time that Krenwinkel, 78, has been approved for release by California’s board of parole hearings. After both of her last two parole grants, Gavin Newsom, California’s governor, reversed the parole board’s decisions and denied her freedom, and Krenwinkel’s attorneys are now urging the Democrat to allow this latest ruling to stand.

China’s succession crisis: a generation of entrepreneurs is retiring, but are their children ready to take over?

Family run private businesses helped power China’s economic miracle, but the next generation is finding it difficult to carry on the work of their parents

Growing up, Ayu would watch his parents put together hand made leather shoes on the ground floor of their three storey home in the Chinese city of Wenzhou. Their relatives in Europe would send photographs of designer products from Italy for the workers to base their designs on, and in the decades that followed, the tiny family-run workshop transformed into a 700 person factory.

“The factory and the home were the same place. I watched them make shoes by hand, piece by piece, using small machines,” Ayu recalls of watching his parents work in the 1980’s.

Bendy elm still standing against all odds crowned UK tree of the year

Hundred-and-fifty-year-old Wych elm in Newcastle, Co Down has grown sideways owing to strong winds

The “astonishing and bizarre” Bendy Tree in Northern Ireland has been crowned the winner of this year’s tree of the year competition.

The wych elm tree, located in Newcastle, County Down, owes its name to its near horizontal trunk, which has grown sideways owing to the strong seaside winds coming off the Irish Sea.

World must change way it produces food to avoid biodiversity collapse, says WWF

Recovery of tigers, tuna and green sea turtles show nature loss can be reversed when action taken, charity says

Conservation comebacks for wild tigers, tuna and green sea turtles prove that global nature loss can be reversed, scientists have said. But a report warns food production must be the next “positive tipping point” if the world is to avert biodiversity collapse.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) analysed nearly 36,000 animal populations and more than 5,000 species, producing the largest ever database of vertebrate wildlife. Scientists found populations had declined by an average of 73% since 1970, showing that “nature continues to be degraded at an alarming scale”, with “no sign of losses slowing”.

Rubio in Greece digs into past to tout Trump’s ‘America first’ approach

In the shadow of the Parthenon, the secretary of state gave a selective reading of history as he urged Europe to ‘awaken from its slumber’

The US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, delivered a classically inspired apologia for Donald Trump’s “America first” foreign policy on Wednesday, giving a sweeping speech to the backdrop of the Parthenon in Athens that appeared tailor-made for campaign ads if he runs for president in 2028.

In the speech, the top US diplomat drew historical parallels from the founders, philosophers and conquerers of antiquity to the modern American spirit – as well as his family’s own journey to the United States – as he called on Europe to “awaken from its long slumber” and reject a “future of atrophy and servitude and decline”.

Microsoft is about to let Copilot loose on your file system

If you thought Windows Recall was creepy, buckle up. Microsoft is about to shoehorn even more AI into its desktop operating system, giving Copilot access to every file on your PC. But don't worry, Redmond insists it's totally secure and safe since the agents powering the functionality will run entirely on your PC — some of the time. Microsoft describes the new functionality, announced alongside a new Nvidia N1X powered Surface Laptop, as "hybrid intelligence." Built atop Microsoft's HydraFusion model router, Windows apps and Copilot features will soon be able to use local models when it makes sense and cloud-based models when it doesn't. For example, Windows might use a local model for simple or privacy-sensitive tasks, or decide complex or performance-sensitive requests need OpenAI's GPT-6 or Anthropic's Claude. Local agents will run in Microsoft's Execution Containers (MXCs), agent sandboxes with fine-grained permissions applied at runtime. According to Microsoft EVP of Windows and Devices Pavan Davuluri, MXCs mean Windows is now "the most secure platform for agents." (That claim will surely age well because models never escape their sandboxes and routers never misbehave.) To support this hybrid intelligence functionality, Microsoft is extending support for Windows ML, its inference framework built on the ONNX runtime, to Llama.cpp – one of the highest-performing inference engines for local AI inference. By adding support for Windows ML, Llama.cpp should be able to take advantage of a broader range of accelerators. Microsoft is rolling out its hybrid intelligence functionality to GitHub Copilot — its AI code assistant — next week and its Copilot app over the next few months. The new Copilot features look and sound suspiciously like OpenClaw in a business suit. Copilot's agentic functionality will not have access to your entire file system, opening the door to advanced search functionality and productivity tasks through integrations with Microsoft Office. In a demo, Microsoft showed how Copilot could be used to find and organize a user's tax documents, then draft an email with those files attached, addressed to an accountant. Microsoft insists it'll only go snooping through your docs if you ask it to. Windows is also getting AI-enhanced search functionality enabling users to surface settings like dark mode. The OS will also get a conversational interface to perform tasks like sending a text message to a friend. Finally, for those interested in coloring outside Microsoft's agentic lines, the company is rolling out a new onboarding experience to make deploying agent harnesses like OpenClaw a bit easier and more secure. Keeping sensitive tasks on device may help to assuage anxieties over privacy, which have dogged Microsoft since the first Copilot+ PCs arrived in 2024 alongside Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite SoCs. It should also help to reduce the load on Microsoft's servers by keeping low-priority, low-complexity requests on devices. That said, the impact of running these models locally on battery life, fan noise, and workload quality could prove a turnoff for many users. ®
