The flip-flop is an essential text of summer style. The Dalai Lama wears flip-flops. Surfers wear flip-flops. They are a beach classic, a staple of campsite shower blocks, non-negotiable after a pedicure. Like a pair of blue jeans or a cloth tote bag, they have a utility that transcends fashion.

But when flip-flops step out of their lane – when they become a fashion shoe, a public-facing shoe – rather than a shoe you leave by the back door – they raise hackles. Every single time we get a heatwave, a lively debate about whether flip-flops are acceptable in the office follows, without ever being resolved. When Jennifer Lawrence wore flip-flops under her Dior gown on the Cannes red carpet in 2023, there was an outcry over the perceived flouting of the film festival’s “elegant footwear” policy.

Disney’s new live-action Moana remake might not have a lot to recommend it – like so many of its ilk it carries a creepy unreality that makes the whole thing look like a liminal ChatGPT hallucination – but it does boast one element that may very well carry it towards the gates of immortality. I am, of course, talking about Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s wig.

Some context. The biggest draw of the live-action Moana is that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson reprises his role from the original, as the egotistical shapeshifting demigod Maui. And this presented something of a problem. You see, Maui is characterised by many things – his tattoos, his exuberance – but none more so than his hair. Maui has the long and flowing hair of a being unencumbered by the onset of male pattern baldness. The hair is where Maui gets most of his personality. It makes him the personified spirit of virility itself.

Flickr and the Black Women Photographers community are teaming up for round four of our grant partnership, and this year we’re going bigger than ever.

The grant recipient will receive $10,000 to invest in their practice, along with a two-year Flickr Pro membership and a one-year SmugMug Pro membership. Ten additional recipients will each receive a one-year Flickr Pro membership and one-year SmugMug Pro membership. The grant recipient will be announced live at MODE by Flickr!

“Traces of Connection” 

This year’s theme, “Traces of Connection,” was chosen by Éléonore Menga, recipient of the 2025 Flickr x Black Women Photographers grant and this year’s guest judge.

Connection is often felt more than seen. It lives in gestures, in absence, in the quiet that people and places leave behind. It can be held in light, carried through landscapes, or embedded in the spaces between individuals.

There is no single definition of connection. It may be tender or tense, visible or implied, human or environmental. What matters is the trace it leaves behind. This is an invitation to notice what remains after a moment, a meeting, or a presence has passed.

Over the last few years, we’ve had the privilege of working closely  with Polly Irungu and getting to knowthe BWP community firsthand. Founded by Polly Irungu and launched in July of 2020, Black Women Photographers (BWP) is a global community, directory, and hub of over 2,100 Black and African women creatives, spanning over 60 countries and 35+ U.S. states.

Black Women Photographers exists to ensure Black women receive proper recognition and, most importantly, get hired. It supports members by promoting their work through an active database distributed to photo editors, directors, curators, and art buyers, while also offering free educational resources including webinars, workshops, training, grants, and portfolio reviews. To date, BWP has awarded over $230,000 in financial grants and provided an additional $80,000 in cutting-edge camera equipment to help empower their members.

Handige ondernemers die de ‘lusten’ plukken van flexibele arbeidsmigratie en de samenleving opzadelen met de negatieve gevolgen daarvan – het is een giftige, onwenselijke dynamiek.

WASHINGTON (ANP) - Het Internationaal Monetair Fonds (IMF) waarschuwt dat een verdere escalatie van het conflict in het Midden-Oosten de bevoorradingsketens in de wereld verder onder druk kan zetten en tot verdere prijsstijgingen kan leiden. Die opmerking plaatst de VN-organisatie voor financiële stabiliteit in een update van zijn voorspellingen voor de wereldeconomie.

Het beeld voor de wereldeconomie dat het IMF schetst, is niet veel gewijzigd ten opzichte van zijn raming in april. Het fonds denkt dat de mondiale groei dit jaar afzwakt tot 3 procent om volgend jaar weer aan te trekken tot 3,4 procent. In april rekende het IMF voor dit jaar en volgend jaar nog op plussen van 3,1 en 3,2 procent. Daarbij waarschuwde het fonds wel dat er veel ergere scenario's denkbaar waren als de Iranoorlog langer voor ontwrichting zou zorgen.

De Amerikaanse president Donald Trump keerde zich eerder op woensdag af van de eerder gesloten voorlopige vredesdeal tussen de VS en Iran. Trump reageerde boos op nieuwe vijandelijkheden tussen de beide landen. Die ontwikkelingen zijn nog niet in de prognose van het IMF meegenomen.

Straat van Hormuz

Er is sowieso sprake van grote verschillen tussen landen. Voor sommige landen heeft het IMF de vooruitzichten opgekrikt, terwijl de groeiverwachtingen zijn verlaagd voor landen die bijvoorbeeld veel grondstoffen moeten importeren. De verschillen worden ook verklaard door de mate waarin landen profiteren van de opmars van kunstmatige intelligentie. In landen met veel techbedrijven compenseerde die meevaller afgelopen maanden voor een deel de impact van de blokkade van de Straat van Hormuz.

In Nederland verwacht het IMF dat de groei dit jaar afzwakt tot 1 procent om volgend jaar uit te komen op 1,3 procent. Dat komt overeen met cijfers die deskundigen van het IMF in mei al presenteerden bij een bezoek aan Nederland. Volgens het IMF stond Nederland er begin dit jaar relatief goed voor. De Iranoorlog heeft er echter voor gezorgd dat de energie- en brandstofprijzen flink zijn gestegen.

Normaal geeft de hoofdeconoom van het IMF een toelichting op nieuwe ramingen. Maar sinds begin deze maand zit het IMF tijdelijk zonder hoofdeconoom. De Fransman Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas is overgestapt naar de Universiteit van Californië. Hij wordt in augustus opgevolgd door Silvana Tenreyro, hoogleraar economie aan de London School of Economics. Tenreyro, die de Argentijnse, Britse en Italiaanse nationaliteit heeft, is de tweede vrouw ooit in deze topfunctie.

BRUSSEL (ANP) - De leiders van de NAVO-landen hebben Albanië op hun top in Turkije niet meer genoemd als het gastland voor een volgende top. Dit als waarschuwing dat het kleine NAVO-lid echt niet minder kan blijven uitgeven aan defensie dan afgesproken, aldus diplomaten.

Albanië werd vorig jaar in Den Haag aangewezen als volgende lidstaat die de leiders mag verwelkomen. Maar het Balkanland hield zich vorig jaar nog niet aan de oude afspraak om 2 procent van het bruto binnenlands product aan defensie te besteden, terwijl de NAVO-landen al hebben afgesproken om die ondergrens nog fors te verhogen. Ook in 2026 leek Albanië de afspraak niet te halen. Door nieuwe toezeggingen op het laatste moment komt het land volgens de NAVO dit jaar echter waarschijnlijk toch boven de 2 procent.

Albanië hoeft zich volgens hoge diplomaten sowieso niet meteen grote zorgen te maken. Het zou vooral gaan om het verhogen van de druk. Zolang er geen ander land is aangewezen, zou de afspraak van Den Haag nog gelden.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - Oud-staatssecretaris Mona Keijzer (Economische Zaken) vond de maatregelen tegen het coronavirus lang niet altijd navolgbaar. In een verhoor door de parlementaire enquêtecommissie corona sprak zij van "een spiegelhuis van redeneringen". Als voorbeeld noemde zij de toegestane groepsgrootte, die steeds wisselde. "Er was geen touw meer aan vast te knopen."

Keijzer was gedurende een groot deel van de crisis als staatssecretaris namens het CDA verantwoordelijk voor het midden- en kleinbedrijf, dat zwaar geraakt werd door alle beperkingen. Zij werd in september 2021 uit het kabinet gezet nadat zij in een interview afstand had genomen van het coronabeleid.

Zelf had Keijzer naar eigen zeggen weinig inspraak over de maatregelen, die met name voor de horeca, detailhandel en bijvoorbeeld kappers grote gevolgen hadden. Als het ministerie van Economische Zaken al betrokken werd, was dat meestal via minister Eric Wiebes, met wie zij naar eigen zeggen "een goede verstandhouding" had. Zij vond de maatregelen aanvankelijk ook "te billijken", zei zij.

ANKARA (ANP) - De leiders van de NAVO-landen gaan de vorig jaar beloofde hogere defensiebudgetten waarmaken en Europese landen gaan NAVO-taken van de Verenigde Staten overnemen. Oekraïne kan rekenen op minstens 140 miljard euro aan steun, zeggen ze in de slotverklaring van hun top in Ankara. En Iran moet de blokkade van de Straat van Hormuz en elk streven naar een kernwapen opgeven.

Deze konijnenholkoekeloerder heeft er vooral zelf last van dat-ie achter iedere boom een Jood ziet maar dat de belastingbetaler ervoor blijft opdraaien dat iemand in psychotische toestand steeds maar weer klusjes krijgt aangeboden bij de NPO gaat wel wat ver. MAAR HEY! Dit keer ziet Nasrdin Dchar (NPO) weer een of ander zionistisch complot bij de FIFA: Argentinië is het 'Israhel' van dit WK, toevallig zijn die landen vrienden van elkaar alsook vrienden van de VS, Infantino zit ook in het complot, en de FIFA heeft geleerd van een genocide (niet duidelijk is welke genocide hij precies bedoelt). Eerder zei Nasrdin Dchar al dat '7 oktober niet is gegaan zoals ze ons doen geloven' - mogelijk volgde-ie daarmee de Eerste Theorie van PRO, dat de Joden hun eigen burgers hebben afgemaakt. Het gaat dus matig in het spookhuis maar neem 'm in godsnaam niet op in een psychiatrisch ziekenhuis, straks maakt-ie er nog z'n hoofdkwartier van.

Haaland zit volgens Nasrdin Dchar NIET in een zionistisch complot

Former NASA boss Jim Bridenstine has warned that the space agency's plan to land astronauts on the Moon risks becoming too complicated for its own good. Bridenstine, who ran NASA during the first Trump administration and departed in 2021 before the Artemis I launch, told This Week In Space that the current lunar lander architecture looks worryingly elaborate compared with Apollo. It is not Bridenstine's first intervention on the matter. In 2025, he questioned the architecture NASA selected – particularly SpaceX's Starship – to return astronauts to the Moon. NASA has since reshuffled the Artemis plan. Artemis III is now set to be an Earth orbit test of lunar lander technologies, broadly in the style of Apollo 9, while the first crewed landing has slipped to Artemis IV, still optimistically penciled in for 2028. Bridenstine praised NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman for the shakeup. The lander, however, continues to trouble him. Although complimentary about the Space Launch System and Orion capsule, which sent the Artemis II crew around the Moon, Bridenstine said: "What we don't have, and this is the challenge, we still don't have a lander. And without a lander, you can't land on the Moon. It's really that simple." Blue Origin and SpaceX are working on landers, components of which are planned to be launched for a rendezvous with Artemis III. At present, Blue Origin plans to launch a vehicle that astronauts will be able to enter after docking. SpaceX is planning to test the docking mechanism, which will be mounted at the end of a Starship. The mission profile for both vehicles is "extraordinarily complicated," Bridenstine said. SpaceX's lunar Starship, for example, will depend on multiple tanker launches and in-orbit propellant transfer before it can head for the Moon. Apollo, by contrast, launched the crew, command/service module, and lunar module on a single Saturn V rocket. "The genius of Apollo was simplicity," he said. "They designed that thing to be as simple as you could possibly make it." It was also not designed to last. By the final Apollo missions, the lunar module supported two astronauts on the surface for roughly three days, while the Artemis program anticipates far longer stays. Bridenstine also noted that the proportion of the US federal budget allocated to Apollo was considerably larger than that of Artemis. Even allowing for that budget gap, Bridenstine's concern is straightforward. At the moment, NASA has a rocket capable of transporting a crew to the Moon, but it does not have a way of getting a crew down to the surface – and the clock is ticking. "Whatever it takes to build a lander soonest is what we ought to be doing as a country," Bridenstine said. ®
