Estonia, Luxembourg and UK are the top three in biennial Yale University index in tackling pollution and other issues

Much of the world has made encouraging strides in reducing toxic problems such as water and air pollution that have long plagued communities. But there is still a widespread lack of progress among countries in dealing with the climate crisis, according to the latest edition of an influential environmental scorecard.

The biennial Yale University index again ranks Estonia as the best-performing of 177 assessed countries, after strong recent efforts to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and protect its ecosystems. Luxembourg is second, and the UK is third, having moved up from fifth place in the 2024 index.

En je kunt moeilijk zeggen dat deze run dezelfde wordt als de vorige drie keer, want de vorige drie keer droeg ze geen enkelband tijdens de campagne, debatten en uitslagenavond! Ditmaal zeer mogelijk wel, want ze werd gisteren dan misschien vrijgesproken van haar verbod op deelname aan de presidentsverkiezingen van april 2027, maar ze moet wel nog een jaar lang een enkelband dragen. Bovendien staat ze tijdens die campagne ook nog onder huisarrest, waardoor een rechter vooraf moet goedkeuren wanneer ze 't land in mag.

Ook tegen die enkelband en het huisarrest gaat ze nu in beroep bij de hoogste rechtbank van Frankrijk, maar vrij sub-optimale omstandigheden om je kandidatuur in bekend te maken. Al hoopt ze natuurlijk vooral dat deze rechtszaak (die neerkwam op het schuiven met wat Europees fractie-geld naar de nationale fractie, en volgens de rechter nadrukkelijk niet neerkwam op zelfverrijking) haar de door het systeem verdrukte volksheldin maakt.

Onze voorlopige definitieve werkhypothese: de Franse Deep State wist dat Bardella de verkiezing zou gaan winnen, dus spraken ze Marine Le Pen expres vrij zodat zij opnieuw zal verliezen.

Naschrift: wellicht ten overvloede maar Rassemblement National staat met Jordan of Marine ver aan kop in de Franse peilingen, namelijk met zo'n 32% tot 35% van de stemmen. Het linkse blok volgt met 26% tot 28%, en Macron met 20% tot 24%.

Japan's Hayabusa2 probe captured rare close-up images of near-Earth asteroid Torifune, revealing a snowman-like shape made of two joined lobes. Phys.org reports: The fridge-sized Hayabusa2 skimmed asteroid Torifune on Sunday in a mission that demonstrated the ability to deflect a potentially dangerous space rock away from Earth. A new image released by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) on Monday could aid such efforts, as researchers say near-Earth asteroids vary in their size, shape and surface characteristics.

"The moment I actually saw this image and the scientific data -- it really gave me goosebumps," JAXA scientist Yuya Mimasu told reporters, adding the asteroid "personally looked like a snowman." The black-and-white image, captured by a telescopic camera, showed what appeared to be two round objects joined together. "You can actually see the rocks... I really hadn't expected to be able to take a photo like this, so I'm absolutely over the moon," he said.

[...] Moving at a speed of more than 18,000 kilometers (11,185 miles) per hour, the probe was due to fly within 800 meters (2,625 feet) of the asteroid, but JAXA said it would analyze the distance later. If confirmed, the mission would be one of the closest flybys of a near-Earth asteroid ever. JAXA also said Monday it succeeded in acquiring data from three other devices that can measure the distance from the asteroid and examine the existence of water.

HAARLEM (ANP) - De provincie Noord-Holland vindt het besluit van het Openbaar Ministerie om Tata Steel strafrechtelijk te vervolgen een zaak tussen het OM en het staalconcern. Volgens het OM heeft het in Noord-Holland gevestigde bedrijf onder meer opzettelijk schadelijke stoffen in de lucht gebracht. De provincie laat in een reactie weten hier kennis van te hebben genomen.

De Omgevingsdienst Noordzeekanaalgebied (OD NZKG) houdt zich namens de provincie bezig met vergunningen, toezicht en handhaving bij Tata Steel. De dienst meldde onlangs te werken aan de voorbereidingen om de vergunning voor de kooksgasfabrieken 1 en 2 van Tata Steel in te trekken vanwege de te hoge uitstoot van schadelijke stoffen.

De omgevingsdienst heeft overigens niet deelgenomen aan het onderzoek van het OM. Het Openbaar Ministerie heeft hiervoor expertise gevraagd van een andere omgevingsdienst, staat op de site van het OM. Wel is de OD NZKG meerdere keren om informatie gevraagd en gehoord als getuige.

LUXEMBURG (ANP/RTR) - Ryanair heeft een nederlaag geleden in zijn rechtszaak tegen de Europese Commissie rond Italiaanse coronasteun. Het Gerecht van de Europese Unie heeft woensdag het verweer van de Ierse luchtvaartmaatschappij verworpen.

Italië trok in 2020 130 miljoen euro uit om noodlijdende Italiaanse vliegmaatschappijen door de coronapandemie te helpen. De regeling was goedgekeurd door de Europese Commissie. Ryanair vond echter dat de maatregel oneerlijk was en dat de Europese Commissie bij de goedkeuring procedurele regels had geschonden. Het Gerecht vernietigde in 2023 de goedkeuring van de Europese Commissie. Het Hof van Justitie, de hoogste Europese rechter, verwees de zaak in 2025 terug naar het Gerecht voor een nieuwe uitspraak.

Het Gerecht oordeelt nu dat de steunregeling "in overeenstemming was met het EU-recht". De regeling schond volgens de EU-rechtbank niet het discriminatieverbod, het beginsel van vrijheid van dienstverlening en het recht van vestiging.

DEN BOSCH (ANP) - Dat provincies en vervoerregio's een landelijke leeftijdskorting in bus, tram en metro voor 65-plussers afschaffen is teleurstellend, vindt SeniorenNetwerkNL. "Voor veel ouderen is het openbaar vervoer geen luxe, maar een noodzakelijke voorziening om zelfstandig te blijven, vrijwilligerswerk te doen, mantelzorg te verlenen of sociale contacten te onderhouden", aldus de organisatie met, naar eigen zeggen, een achterban van 170.000 leden.

Volgens SeniorenNetwerkNL verdwijnt de korting voor circa 3,5 miljoen mensen, "terwijl juist deze groep steeds vaker te maken krijgt met oplopende kosten van wonen, zorg en levensonderhoud".

De organisatie verwacht dat door het besluit een deel van de ouderen minder gebruik zal maken van het openbaar vervoer. "Dat staat haaks op de gezamenlijke ambitie om mensen langer zelfstandig, mobiel en maatschappelijk actief te houden."

Eerder woensdag reageerde De Seniorencoalitie al kritisch op het besluit.
