Amazon's 14,000-plus layoffs announced last month touched almost every piece of the company's sprawling business, from cloud computing and devices to advertising, retail and grocery stores. But one job category bore the brunt of cuts more than others: engineers. CNBC: Documents filed in New York, California, New Jersey and Amazon's home state of Washington showed that nearly 40% of the more than 4,700 job cuts in those states were engineering roles. The data was reported by Amazon in Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN, filings to state agencies. The figures represent a segment of the total layoffs announced in October. Not all data was immediately available because of differences in state WARN reporting requirements.

An anonymous reader shares a report: Microsoft is upgrading its Advanced Paste tool in PowerToys for Windows 11, allowing you to use an on-device AI model to power some of its features. Meta is venturing into the complex world of electricity trading, betting it can accelerate the construction of new US power plants that are vital to its AI ambitions. From a report: The foray into power trading comes after Meta heard from investors and plant developers that too few power buyers were willing to make the early, long-term commitments required to spur investment, according to Urvi Parekh, the company's head of global energy. Trading electricity will give the company the flexibility to enter more of those longer contracts.
Plant developers "want to know that the consumers of power are willing to put skin in the game," Parekh said in an interview. "Without Meta taking a more active voice in the need to expand the amount of power that's on the system, it's not happening as quickly as we would like."

De Oekraïense president Volodymyr Zelensky heeft met NAVO-chef Mark Rutte gesproken over "de diplomatieke mogelijkheden" om de oorlog tussen Oekraïne en Rusland te stoppen. Hij zegt in een bericht op X dat hij met Rutte sprak over het 28-puntenplan van zijn Amerikaanse ambtgenoot Donald Trump. Zelensky beklemtoonde dat hij bereid is "snel, voortvarend en constructief" mee te werken om het plan een succes te maken.
Zelensky heeft vrijdag ook met de Amerikaanse vicepresident JD Vance gesproken over de Amerikaanse voorstellen. Hij zei dat hij Trumps wens het bloedvergieten te stoppen nog steeds respecteert. Oekraïne gaat volgens Zelensky samen met de VS en Europa op het niveau van nationale veiligheidsadviseurs werken aan "een uitvoerbaar pad naar vrede".
Trump wil dat Oekraïne het raamwerk voor een vredesovereenkomst aanvaardt vóór 27 november. Hij noemde dat vrijdag nog "een zeer geschikte datum" voor de aanvaarding. In de VS is de 27e een nationale feestdag, Thanksgiving.
SCHIPHOL (ANP) - KLM heeft met de vakbonden een nieuw cao-akkoord voor grondmedewerkers van de luchtvaartmaatschappij gesloten. Eind vorige maand werd al een principeovereenkomst gesloten met FNV en CNV die nu is goedgekeurd door de leden. Volgens KLM wordt het akkoord breed gedragen, ook door de bonden De Unie, NVLT en VKP.
KLM verhoogt de lonen over een periode van twee jaar met 3,25 procent. Dat is meer dan de 2,25 procent die KLM eerder met drie andere bonden had afgesproken, maar waar FNV en CNV ontevreden over waren. Daarom organiseerden die bonden meerdere stakingen van grondmedewerkers op Schiphol. Zij zijn verantwoordelijk voor bijvoorbeeld het in- en uitladen van bagage, het verslepen van vliegtuigen en het te woord staan van reizigers.
Ook ontvangen medewerkers nettouitkeringen van in totaal 750 euro en wordt een vroegpensioenregeling verruimd. Daarnaast trekt KLM de winstdelingsregeling gelijk met die van andere medewerkers. KLM telt ongeveer 14.000 grondmedewerkers.
AMSTERDAM (ANP) - De Amsterdamse AEX-index is vrijdag met verlies het weekend ingegaan. De chipfondsen ASML, ASMI en Besi waren de grootste dalers bij de hoofdfondsen op het Damrak met minnen tot 6,3 procent door zorgen bij beleggers over de enorme investeringen in AI en de sterk gestegen waarderingen van techfondsen.
De AEX eindigde 0,9 procent lager op 926,69 punten. De MidKap zakte 0,6 procent tot 860,17 punten. De DAX in Frankfurt daalde 0,8 procent. De CAC 40 in Parijs was vrijwel onveranderd en de FTSE 100 in Londen won 0,1 procent.
Ook staalconcern ArcelorMittal en de aanbieder van postkluisjes InPost stonden bij de sterkste dalers in de AEX met koersverliezen tot 3,6 procent. Informatieleverancier RELX was koploper in de hoofdindex met een plus van 2,7 procent, gevolgd door bierbrouwer Heineken, uitzender Randstad en Unilever die tot 2,5 procent meer waard werden.
In de MidKap sloten investeringsplatform Allfunds, bouwer Heijmans en bodemonderzoeker Fugro de rij met koersdalingen tot 3,5 procent. Luchtvaartcombinatie Air France-KLM nam de leiding bij de middelgrote fondsen op Beursplein 5 met een winst van 6,4 procent. Flitshandelaar Flow Traders, dat profiteert van onrust op de aandelenmarkten, klom 2,2 procent.
Europese defensiebedrijven hadden een moeilijke dag. De Verenigde Staten hebben een plan voor vrede tussen Oekraïne en Rusland. Het plan van 28 punten dwingt Oekraïne tot grote concessies, zoals het afstaan van extra grondgebied, het inperken van het leger en de garantie dat Oekraïne niet toetreedt tot de NAVO. De Oekraïense president Volodymyr Zelensky heeft gezegd met "alternatieven" te komen voor het Amerikaanse vredesplan.

AMSTERDAM (ANP) - Het besluit van de gemeente Amsterdam om geen grote nieuwe datacenters toe te staan in de gemeente, betekent dat Liander drie elektriciteitsstations minder hoeft te bouwen. Hiermee bespaart de netbeheerder zo'n 125 miljoen euro, meldde de gemeente Amsterdam vrijdagmiddag op basis van een nieuwe doorrekening. Ook TenneT hoeft volgens deze doorrekening twee stations minder te bouwen.
De gemeente besloot eerder dit jaar tot de stop op nieuwe datacenters door gebrek aan ruimte in de hoofdstad, zowel fysiek als op het elektriciteitsnetwerk. "We hebben als overheden de verantwoordelijkheid om na te denken over hoe we de schaarse ruimte in onze stad verdelen", licht wethouder Zita Pels (duurzaamheid) toe. "Goed dat nu blijkt dat door de keuzes die we maken we meer ruimte overhouden voor bijvoorbeeld wonen en groen."

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has come through yet again with an unprecedented image from our Solar System, this time of a unique pair of Wolf-Rayet stars known as Apep. A Wolf-Rayet is a massive, very hot star that’s in the later stages of its life, quickly losing mass with the help of strong stellar winds. Thanks to Webb, researchers were able to observe coiled shells of dust around the pair for the first time. Previous documentation collected by other telescopes had only ever shown one dust shell.
What makes this observation especially interesting is that there’s actually a third fiery orb at play here, which Webb’s new data confirms is gravitationally bound to the other two in this system. A massive supergiant, this third player “slices” holes into the dust shells—which have been emitted over the last 700 years—creating a unique effect. “To find the holes the third star has cut like a knife through the dust, look for the central point of light and trace a V shape from about 10 o’clock to 2 o’clock,” NASA says.
The celestial phenomena’s name, Apep, references the Egyptian god of chaos. Because while it may appear to be moving slowly, these swirling clouds race at a remarkable speed. “The dust-producing Wolf-Rayet stars in Apep aren’t exactly on a tranquil cruise,” NASA says. “They are whipping through space and sending out dust at 1,200 to 2,000 miles per second.” Because the dust is so dense, it shows up clearly in the image.
“Webb’s data, combined with observations from the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile, confirmed that the two Wolf-Rayet stars sail past one another approximately every 190 years,” says a statement. “Over each orbit, they make a close pass for 25 years, producing and spewing amorphous carbon dust.”
