De collega van Doris (Yousef, 32) zeikt vandaag vanaf huis. Dit heeft hij haar in meerdere geagiteerde mails laten weten. Voor Doris wel zo fijn, omdat ze nu meer gedaan krijgt op kantoor, zo laat ze weten terwijl ze een mail van Yousef opent: “Een vriendelijke reminder dat de deadline vorige week woensdag was!”

Veel collega’s vinden het face-to-face jammeren belangrijk op de werkvloer, maar Doris vindt het juist wel fijn om af en toe wat afstand te bewaren tot haar collega’s, Yousef in het bijzonder. “Tja, het scheelt zeker iets, ik bedoel: hij kan me vanaf daar niet dwingen dingen te doen.” Ze kijkt naar een nieuwe melding op haar telefoon: “Ha! Voor de zekerheid stuur ik dit nog een keer door — misschien is het per ongeluk aan je aandacht ontsnapt , zou fijn zijn als je ASAP kunt reageren.”

Volgens manager Richard is het bedrijfsbeleid dat collega’s nu de mogelijkheid krijgen om in ieder geval twee dagen per week vanuit huis te zeiken: “Het is 2025, hybride zeuren hoort er nu eenmaal bij. We willen onze werknemers alle ruimte bieden om vanuit huis allerlei werk over de schutting te gooien. Daar worden werknemers nu eenmaal veel gelukkiger van. Dat is voor alle partijen beter. En je merkt daardoor ook dat er in minder uren, effectiever gezeken wordt.”

Yousef zelf vindt het fijn dat hij nu thuis zijn laptop kan opstarten en daardoor meer tijd heeft om even naar de supermarkt te lopen om boodschappen te doen en personeel af te snauwen: “Het geeft een zeker gevoel van vrijheid. Maar ik zie ook wel de nadelen. Soms is het makkelijker om gewoon even je hoofd om de deur te steken als je tegen een collega wil klagen dat een memo nog niet verzonden is of dat de koffie een beetje lauw was.”

AMSTERDAM (ANP) - De Amsterdamse AEX-index is dinsdag hoger geëindigd, nadat de hoofdgraadmeter op het Damrak met verlies was geopend. Beleggers keerden terug van een lang paasweekend, waardoor de aandelenbeurs op maandag gesloten was.

Wall Street was wel open op tweede paasdag en daar werden flinke verliezen geleden. Dat gebeurde nadat de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump opnieuw had uitgehaald naar voorzitter Jerome Powell van de Federal Reserve. De aandelenbeurzen in New York veerden dinsdag tussentijds echter op en toonden daarmee wat herstel.

De AEX sloot 0,6 procent hoger op 857,21 punten. De MidKap verloor 0,2 procent en eindigde op 796,31 punten. De beurzen in Frankfurt, Parijs en Londen stegen tot 0,7 procent.

MOSKOU (ANP/RTR/AFP) - De Amerikaanse gezant Steve Witkoff wordt deze week in Moskou verwacht. Dat melden Russische media na uitlatingen van een topadviseur van het Kremlin.

Mogelijk doet Witkoff een nieuwe poging de slepende onderhandelingen over een bestand in Oekraïne vlot te trekken. Witkoff was in opdracht van de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump al herhaaldelijk in Moskou. Hij had onder meer drie lange ontmoetingen met de Russische president Vladimir Poetin waarin de Russische oorlog tegen Oekraïne centraal stond. Zijn pogingen leverden geen duurzaam resultaat op.

Woensdag overleggen Oekraïne, Frankrijk, het Verenigd Koninkrijk en de Verenigde Staten in Londen over de Amerikaanse plannen om een eind te maken aan de oorlog. Mogelijk neemt Witkoff daaraan deel en zou hij met de uitkomst daarvan naar Rusland kunnen afreizen.

Het laatste bezoek van Witkoff aan Rusland was op 11 april, toen hij in Sint-Petersburg ruim vier uur met Poetin over de oorlog in Oekraïne sprak. De Trump-gezant liet zich steeds opvallend positief uit over de Russen.

Wat klinkt als een scène uit een griezelfilm, blijkt de bittere werkelijkheid: tot 2015 werd er tijdens formele diners aan Worcester College, Oxford, wijn geschonken uit een kelk gemaakt van een menselijke schedel.

De lugubere traditie kwam aan het licht dankzij een nieuw boek van archeoloog Dan Hicks, hoogleraar aan de universiteit en conservator van het Pitt Rivers Museum. In Every Monument Will Fall reconstrueert hij de gewelddadige koloniale geschiedenis achter geroofde menselijke resten.

De "schedelkelk" werd in 1946 aan het college geschonken door George Pitt-Rivers, een oud-student en overtuigd eugeneticus die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd geïnterneerd vanwege zijn steun aan fascistenleider Oswald Mosley. Zijn grootvader, Augustus Pitt Rivers, had het object in 1884 gekocht bij een veiling van Sotheby’s.

Naamloos slachtoffer kolonialisme

Volgens Hicks wijst koolstofdatering erop dat de schedel ongeveer 225 jaar oud is, vermoedelijk afkomstig uit het Caribisch gebied. Alles wijst erop dat het om de resten van een tot slaaf gemaakte vrouw gaat – een naamloos slachtoffer van het kolonialisme, letterlijk gedegradeerd tot tafelservies.

“Het gaat niet alleen om standbeelden van koloniale profiteurs”, zegt Hicks. “De werkelijke slachtoffers zijn vaak uitgewist uit de geschiedenis. Deze schedel illustreert de dehumanisering tot in het extreme.”

Onder druk van bezorgde medewerkers en gasten werd het gebruik van de kelk in 2015 stopgezet. Sinds 2019 ligt het object, na juridisch en wetenschappelijk advies, permanent opgeslagen in een afgesloten archief. “Het college heeft dit zorgvuldig en ethisch afgehandeld”, aldus een woordvoerder.

Toch roept het verhaal veel woede op. Labour-parlementslid Bell Ribeiro-Addy noemt het “walgelijk” dat een elite-instelling als Oxford decennialang gebruik maakte van de resten van mogelijk een tot slaaf gemaakte vrouw, zonder noemenswaardige waardering voor haar leven of dood.

Het boek van Hicks documenteert ook andere gevallen waarin koloniale trofeeën – menselijke schedels – terechtkwamen in Britse huizen of musea. Het maakt pijnlijk duidelijk dat het Britse koloniale verleden niet alleen leeft in monumenten, maar ook in vergeten objecten die jarenlang als ‘kunst’ werden beschouwd.

Incredible. This is a major technology win! 

The amazing QR code, which links to 5-year-old CDC handwashing instructions from during the COVID-19 pandemic, was married last Friday, making it the first QR code in history to pull off such a remarkable feat. Even more impressive, the QR code’s bride isn’t another QR code, but a human woman who says she was attracted to her husband due to “how easy it was to scan him and how useful the information he linked to was.” The QR code’s new wife is also quite conventionally attractive (not that it makes a difference one way or another, but it’s just sort of interesting). 

This is not only the biggest advancement for QR codes since they were invented in 1994, but also possibly the biggest technological win of the decade. Now that the human/QR code marriage barrier has been crossed, it’s only a matter of time before we start seeing similar romantic relationships developing between humans and website URLs or Wi-Fi networks. While it may be decades before humans can actually procreate with QR codes, a QR code experiencing marital bliss is obviously a very important first step towards that reality.

While it’s essential for marketers to cultivate a well-defined brand identity, sometimes they decide to shake up their brand’s voice. Case in point: Goldfish has changed their slogan from “The Snack That Smiles Back” to “When The Darkness Falls, Will You Be Ready?”

Hmm! Not totally sure where Pepperidge Farm is going with that, but cool!

Earlier this week, Goldfish removed all photos of kids enjoying their crackers from their social media accounts and instead uploaded a single ascetic black image with the text, “WHEN THE DARKNESS FALLS, WILL YOU BE READY?”—which we can only assume is the brand’s new slogan. Additionally, on their website, where there were formerly fun facts about Goldfish’s mascot, Finn, there are now graphics of several different countdown clocks, each displaying a wildly different amount of time, all labeled “TIME TILL THE DARKNESS FALLS.” 

Okay! So it’s clear Goldfish thinks “the darkness” is going to “fall.” However, what exactly that means, or what it specifically has to do with Goldfish, unfortunately remains unclear. We reached out to Pepperidge Farm representatives to ask if Goldfish is supposed to be the light in the darkness, or if Goldfish will somehow help you when the darkness falls. Their only response was, “Pepperidge Farm is not a political brand,” which wasn’t what we asked, but we suppose it’s good to know regardless. 

Welp, there you have it! Honestly this is a pretty interesting move from a beloved children’s cracker brand, but time will tell if the move pays off for them. In the meantime, we’re gonna get our hands on some Flavor-Blasted crackers and go to town! Yum yum!

More Everything Forever (permalink)

ForeverAstrophysicist Adam Becker knows a few things about science and technology – enough to show, in a new book called More Everything Forever that the claims that tech bros make about near-future space colonies, brain uploading, and other skiffy subjects are all nonsense dressed up as prediction:

Becker investigates the personalities, the ideologies, the coalitions, the histories, and crucially, the grifts behind such science fictional pursuits as infinite life-extension, space colonization, automation panic, AI doomerism, longtermism, effective altruism, rationalism, and conciousness uploading.

This is, loosely speaking, the bundle of ideologies that Timnit Gebru and Émile P. Torres dubbed TESCREAL (transhumanism, Extropianism, singularitarianism, (modern) cosmism, Rationalism, Effective Altruism, and longtermism):

While these are largely associated with modern Silicon Valley esoteric techbros (and the odd Oxfordian like Nick Bostrom), they have very deep roots, which Becker excavates – like Nikolai Fyodorov's 18th century "cosmism," a project to "scientifically" resurrect everyone who ever lived inside of a simulation:

In their modern incarnation, these ideas largely originate in science fiction novels. That is to say, they were made up and popularized by people like me, the vast majority of whom made no pretense of being able to predict the future or even realistically describe a path from the present to the future they were presenting. Science fiction is something between a card trick and a consensual con game, where the writer shows you just enough detail to make you think that the rest of it must be lurking somewhere in the wings. No one in sf has ever explained how consciousness uploading could possibly work, and neither have any of the advocates for consciousness uploading – the difference is that (most of) the sf writers know they're just making stuff up.

Becker's central question is how many "smart" people (some of them very smart and accomplished, others merely very certain that they are smart despite all evidence to the contrary) can mistake futuristic allegories made up by pulp writers for prophesy?

In answering this question, he uncovers a corollary of Upton Sinclair's famous maxim that "it is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it," namely, that "it is easy to get a person to believe something when doing so will make them feel good about themselves."

The beliefs that Becker explores in this book sometimes make the believers rich (like the AI grifters who run around shouting about AI taking over the world and turning us all into paperclips). Sometimes, they make their believers feel good about being selfish assholes (like longtermism, which holds that all the misery in the world today is worth it if you can make 24 heptillion hypothetical simulated people just a little happy in 10,000 years). Sometimes, they make their believers feel good about life after death, or eternal life – the same pitch that religions have been roping in followers with since the stone age.

What differentiates these beliefs from other faith-based claims is that their followers claim that they aren't operating on faith, but on science, reason and rationality. This is where the fact that Becker is a bona fide astrophysicist comes in. Not only is he personally qualified to debunk claims about space colonization, but he's also familiar with the rigorous process of scientific inquiry, and capable of consulting experts and listening to them. That's how he concludes, for example, that having your head cut off and frozen when you die is just a form of corpse mutilation, with a zero point zero zero zero zero percent chance of someone recovering your mind from your freezerburned brain.

Like his subjects, Becker has a complicated relationship with science fiction. He, too, enjoys the imaginative flights of the genre, its delightful thought-experiments, its gnarly moral conundra. I love these too. They make for a fascinating and often useful lens for understanding and challenging our own relationship with technology and our very humanity. Ultimately, Becker is exploring the difference between reading sf because it makes you think in new ways, and reading sf as a kind of prophetic text, and – crucially – he's asserting that it's perfectly possible to enjoy this stuff without organizing your moral life around hypothetical heptillions of virtual people living in the year 25,000; or, indeed, having your head cut off and frozen.
