Extreme heatwave across US east coast already has already upended some of the weekend’s long-planned celebrations

Donald Trump’s plans to celebrate the US’s 250th birthday with “the greatest show of all” in the heart of Washington DC were disrupted on Saturday evening by fears of a thunderstorm.

South Carolina's pine forests "have spent centuries hiding a secret as old as America itself," reports CBS News:



In August 1780, British and American soldiers clashed there, leading to a terrible defeat for the Continental army [fighting for the 13 colonies rebelling against England]. Battlefield archaeologists Jim Legg and Steve Smith have been studying the site for decades, but recently, they made a shocking discovery: The sandy soil was home to several sets of remains buried in shallow graves. Metal buttons suggested the men had been Continental soldiers, but there was no other identification... About 2,000 Continental soldiers were killed, wounded or captured, and some men never returned home.

Their families could only guess at their fates. But Legg and Smith's discovery, paired with an explosion in DNA technology, is changing what's possible. A set of remains, previously known only as 9B, has been identified as John Pumphrey, a young man from Maryland who enlisted in the Continental Army's 7th Maryland Regiment as young as 13... Pumphrey likely marched more than a thousand miles with the regiment. The unit fought in battles with then-Gen. George Washington in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - In Rotterdam, Utrecht en Den Haag is het weer rustig op straat nadat de Mobiele Eenheid (ME) zaterdagavond moest optreden wegens onrust rond de WK-wedstrijd tussen Marokko en Canada. Fans van Marokko gingen in de grote steden de straat op om de winst te vieren.

De burgemeester van Den Haag gaf een noodbevel af voor de Schilderswijk, toen het feest daar uit de hand dreigde te lopen. De ME en politieagenten te paard traden op om de straten te ontruimen. Ook werd een waterwerper ingezet.

In Rotterdam kwam de ME in actie bij de 1e Middellandstraat. Een groep mensen blokkeerde daar een calamiteitenroute, die open moest blijven voor hulpdiensten. Ook werden agenten bekogeld met eieren. Na middernacht werd de inzet van de ME afgeschaald en inmiddels is de rust weergekeerd, aldus een woordvoerder van de politie.

In Utrecht zorgden relschoppers voor ernstige ongeregeldheden in Lombok, Kanaleneiland en Overvecht. Een ANP-verslaggever zag dat het in Lombok iets na 01.00 uur in de nacht van zaterdag op zondag weer rustig was.
