Under glittering chandeliers in a neoclassical ballroom, guests took their seats. It was 10am and scores of people had gathered at a private members’ club in Brussels for a conference to mark 250 years of American independence, organised by Viktor Orbán’s favourite thinktank in the EU capital, MCC Brussels.
Opening the one-day event, the MCC director, Frank Furedi, said the 250th anniversary had “really escaped the attention of a European audience” in a speech that lauded the founding fathers before launching a sweeping attack on Europe’s “incompetent political class”.

My parents would watch, my brothers and sisters, people would come round to watch. That’s in Haro, La Rioja. And then as a professional, wherever the game found me, I would watch it. I would be shocked if the record for the most goals scored by a player in a World Cup – Just Fontaine’s 13 in 1958 – is not broken this summer. That is how elite the world’s top forwards are. They are all pushing each other to keep scoring more. We are so lucky to be watching them at the same time.
I also believe, because of the skill set required to be a world-class, modern-day finisher, we are going to see more and more playing into their 40s, so much so that it may be possible that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo could go to another World Cup.

SAN FRANCISCO (ANP) - Uber heeft het grootste deel van zijn geplande uitbreiding voor maaltijdbezorging in Europa gepauzeerd. Ingewijden melden aan de Financial Times dat het Amerikaanse bedrijf niet meer van plan is later dit jaar uit te breiden naar vijf van de zeven landen, onder meer Oostenrijk, Noorwegen en Griekenland. Volgens een bron uit de sector heeft het besluit te maken met het plan om de Duitse concurrent Delivery Hero over te nemen.
De ingewijde stelt tegenover de zakenkrant dat het uitstel kan helpen een eventueel mededingingsonderzoek van de EU naar de overname van Delivery Hero soepeler te laten verlopen. Vanwege de grote overlap tussen de markten van beide bedrijven zal die waarschijnlijk onder een vergrootglas komen te liggen. Uber deed eerder een bod van 10 miljard euro op Delivery Hero, dat in mei werd afgewezen, maar het bedrijf wil de branchegenoot nog steeds inlijven.
Uber Eats is ook actief in Nederland.
