GSTAAD (ANP) - Beachvolleyballers Stefan Boermans en Alexander Brouwer hebben het prestigieuze Elite16-toernooi in Gstaad gewonnen. In de finale in Zwitserland versloeg het Nederlandse koppel de Amerikanen Trevor Crabb en Chase Budinger in drie sets: 26-28 21-17 15-11.
Katja Stam en RaĂŻsa Schoon veroverden brons in Gstaad. Het duo verloor de halve finale van Megan Kraft en Kelly Cheng uit de Verenigde Staten. Daarna was er een zege in de strijd om de derde plek tegen het Amerikaanse koppel Julia Donlin/Lexy Denaburg: 21-19 21-11.
Na het zilver in Ostrava is het de tweede medaille op rij voor Stam en Schoon.
In het Limburgse Heibloem zijn vier inzittenden van een personenauto overleden door een eenzijdig verkeersongeval. Dat meldt de politie. Twee andere inzittenden raakten gewond en zijn naar een ziekenhuis gebracht.
De auto raakte om een nog onbekende reden van de weg en kwam tot stilstand tegen een boom, aldus de politie. Het ongeval gebeurde zondagmiddag rond 14.30 uur op Aan de Heibloem. De weg is afgesloten, zodat de politie onderzoek kan doen.
LONDEN (ANP) - Demi Schuurs heeft met haar dubbelpartner Ellen Perez uit AustraliĂ« de derde ronde bereikt van het vrouwendubbel op Wimbledon. De 32-jarige Limburgse tennisster en de Australische versloegen Solana Sierra uit ArgentiniĂ« en MarĂa Camila Osorio uit Colombia in twee sets: 6-3 6-1.

EINDHOVEN (ANP) - Het zoek- en reddingsteam van USAR is weer terug in Nederland. Het vliegtuig met daarin de 64 leden en acht hulphonden landde rond 13.25 uur op vliegbasis Eindhoven.
Op het vliegveld wachtten familie en vrienden op hun geliefden die de afgelopen dagen in Venezuela zochten naar slachtoffers van de zware aardbevingen.
In Eindhoven wordt het team ook verwelkomd door directeur Stabiliteit en Humanitaire Hulp bij het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken Nathalie Olijslager.
Het Urban Search and Rescue Team (USAR) vertrok vorige week vrijdag naar Venezuela om te zoeken naar overlevenden van de zware aardbevingen. Afgelopen woensdag stopte het team de werkzaamheden omdat er een nieuwe fase was aangebroken in de hulpverlening. De kans om nog levende mensen te vinden, was toen erg klein geworden.
EINDHOVEN (ANP) - Directeur Stabiliteit en Humanitaire Hulp bij het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken, Nathalie Olijslager, heeft het Nederlandse reddingsteam USAR bedankt voor de inzet in Venezuela, na de zware aardbevingen daar. "Jullie hebben een fantastische prestatie geleverd", zei ze tegen het team dat vlak daarvoor was geland op vliegbasis Eindhoven.
Olijslager wilde namens het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken en van Buitenlandse Handel en Ontwikkelingssamenwerking "diep respect" uitspreken naar de groep. "Jullie hebben onder enorm moeilijke omstandigheden moeten werken. Het was ontzettend warm en een totale ravage", beschreef ze de situatie in het land. "Ik kan me voorstellen dat het moeilijk is om Venezuela nu achter je te laten." Ze verzekerde dat de reddingsoperatie vanuit Nederland ook de komende maanden doorgaat voor de mensen daar. "Jullie hebben ze ontmoet, jullie hebben ze in de ogen gekeken. En jullie weten allemaal, net als wij, dat we het doen voor de mensen daar."
Grote dankbaarheid was er ook van de Venezolaanse ambassadeur Rocio Maneiro. Geëmotioneerd bedankte ze het team "voor alles wat jullie in mijn land gedaan hebben".
Trots
Ook de landelijke USAR-commandant Arjen Littooij richtte zich tot het team. Hij sprak van "een zichtbare en gewaardeerde bijdrage", die "een diepe buiging en een groot applaus" verdient. Hij zei trots te zijn op de inzet en het doorzettingsvermogen onder extreme omstandigheden. "De hitte was meedogenloos, de confrontatie met leed was indringend en de fysieke en mentale belasting was groot. En toch hebben jullie gedaan waarvoor jullie jarenlang getraind hebben en goed in zijn, met vastberadenheid en enorme inzet."
Het USAR-team bestond uit 64 leden en acht hulphonden. Zij reisden vorige week vrijdag af naar Venezuela om te zoeken naar overlevenden. Het team wist uiteindelijk zelf geen mensen te redden, maar was wel betrokken bij succesvolle reddingsoperaties. In La Guaira, dat zwaar was getroffen, zijn door de internationale samenwerking van USAR-teams veertien mensen levend onder puin gevonden.
Menselijke ontmoetingen
"Een aantal keren was het na een lange reddingsoperatie verschrikkelijk balen als het slachtoffer uiteindelijk toch overleden was", zei de commandant. "Maar jullie hebben laten zien dat niet alleen reddingen en coördinatie tellen. Het verschil werd ook gemaakt door de menselijke ontmoetingen." Bijvoorbeeld met families die wachtten op antwoorden of die een luisterend oor of helpende hand nodig hadden.
Het dodental van de aardbevingen eind juni is inmiddels opgelopen tot bijna 3000. Nog duizenden mensen zijn vermist.

When Carmen Aguilar GarcĂa began investigating the involvement of private equity firms in Englandâs childcare sector with her fellow data journalists three years ago, she didnât imagine her efforts would one day be scaled up to examine private equityâs role in the entire UK economy. That ambitious undertaking by Carmen and colleagues from across the Guardian was published earlier this week.
âThe initial investigation into the childcare sector in 2023 was already challenging and a big team effort,â says Carmen, a data projects editor at the Guardian. âExtrapolating it to the whole economy did not seem realistic back then.â
For GonzĂĄlez, this legacy informs a painting practice that merges past and present. “Creating isn’t something we do. It’s something we are,” the artist says in a statement. “And I come from that; I carry it in my body.” Her expressive oil compositions draw upon aristocratic portraits and religious paintings, centering the focus on beautiful women who wear contemporary parkas and puffer coats.

It would be remiss not to mention the AI-generated meme of Pope Francis wearing a giant white puffer coat, which swept across the internet in 2023 and appeared so realistic that it initially fooled many into thinking it was real. The stir was not only about the perils of the technology and deepfakes but also that the image itself was so jarring. The papacy originated approximately 2,000 years ago and is steeped in specific customs, rituals, and visuals, so to imagine the pope wearing something so modern felt out of sync with time and tradition.
This asynchronous tension is what GonzĂĄlez latches onto, albeit in a somewhat more tender, considerate way. She merges art historical tropes with an emphasis on women protagonists and garments that reflect style trends distinctive to the late 20th and 21st centuries. With demure expressions, vivid outfits, and direct gazes, the figures central in her paintings buck the norm.
“I’ve never tried to separate the cultured from the popular or the historical from the contemporary,” the artist says. “What interests me is precisely that these references speak to one another and generate something alive, not a nostalgic image of the past but something with a pulse today…But what ties all those layers together, if I had to name just one thing, is a search for humanity and emotion within the image. That whoever looks at the painting feels something real. That’s what matters to me.”

âArcheologen stuitten op een bijzondere ontdekking op de Veluwe vandaag. De wetenschappers vonden in hun zoektocht naar fossielen de overblijfselen van iemand die waarschijnlijk Rutger van 26 is en die in het eerste kwartier op een festival in juni van het jaar 221 na Christus was kwijtgeraakt.
De groep archeologen wist gelijk dat het om een festivalganger ging omdat zij een koperen festivalmuntje vonden en een herbruikbare stenen beker die in die tijd veelal gebruikt werden om afval op festivals tegen te gaan. âWe hebben botonderzoek uitgevoerd bij de persoon en bodemonderzoek in de omgeving. Daaruit konden we uitlezen dat er een dixie in de buurt heeft gestaan. Als je alle puzzelstukjes dan naast elkaar legt, hebben we hele sterke aanwijzingen dat dit de vriend is die even is gaan plassen, is verdwaald en de groep nooit meer heeft teruggevonden.â
Om wat voor festival het precies gaat, hebben de archeologen nog niet weten te achterhalen. De mainstage is nog niet gevonden.
Rond het WK voetbal zette de Mexicaanse regering tienduizenden agenten en militairen in om de drie speelsteden te bewaken. Na de wedstrijd Mexico-Engeland van vannacht wordt het WK voortgezet op Amerikaanse bodem. Het is de vraag of die Mexicaanse steden even veilig blijven als tijdens het toernooi.
