PARIJS (ANP/AFP) - De Franse autoriteiten vervolgen een agent voor een incident waarbij een scholier gewond raakte. De politieman zou vorige week van dichtbij een traangasgranaat op de jongen hebben afgevuurd tijdens de scholierenprotesten.

De 14-jarige jongen, die Eden wordt genoemd, verloor daardoor veel tanden. Ook brak hij volgens de autoriteiten zijn kaak. "Hij kan niet meer praten en eet door een rietje", zei zijn moeder tegen Franse media.

Videobeelden van het incident in Saint-Ouen-l'Aumône zijn veel gedeeld op sociale media. De betrokken agent verklaarde tijdens verhoor dat de jongen zich verzette en dat hij daarop reageerde.

Justitie gaat daar niet in mee. Een aanklager stelde dat het afvuren van de granaat disproportioneel was. Daarom kan de agent, die inmiddels is geschorst, zich volgens hem niet beroepen op zelfverdediging.

TEHERAN/WASHINGTON (ANP/AFP) - De Iraanse regering heeft de Franse ambassadeur in Teheran, Pierre Cochard, om opheldering gevraagd over het optreden van de oproerpolitie tegen demonstrerende middelbare scholieren.

Frankrijk schendt volgens Teheran mensenrechten met buitensporig gewelddadig optreden. Vooralsnog meldden de autoriteiten 215 gewonde betogers, maar bij de meesten zouden hun verwondingen volgens Parijs niets te maken hebben met het optreden van agenten van de politie of eenheden voor rellenbestrijding.

Frankrijk protesteert doorgaans veel tegen het optreden van Iraanse veiligheidstroepen tegen betogers.

In Washington ziet president Donald Trump de migratie en de islam als diepere oorzaken van de problemen op Franse middelbare scholen. "Wat in Frankrijk gebeurt, is niks anders dan het gevolg van een massale immigratie die buiten controle is."

Sinds eind september zijn er eerst in de Parijse regio en later elders scholierenprotesten tegen misstanden op middelbare scholen.

DEN BOSCH (ANP) - Suzanne Schulting gaat in het eerste deel van het nieuwe schaatsseizoen vooralsnog niet shorttracken. De 29-jarige schaatsster van Team Essent, die het langebaanschaatsen combineert met het shorttracken, richt zich in de komende maanden op de langebaan, zo vertelde ze dinsdag tijdens de teampresentatie in Den Bosch.

"Het is een heel lastige compacte kalender dit jaar en er is bijzonder weinig ruimte om ook nog een shorttrackwedstrijd te rijden", licht Schulting haar besluit toe. "Dat is geen gemakkelijke keuze geweest. Ik doe het bij shorttracken niet meer om ook nog een wereldbekertje te rijden. Als ik het wil, wil ik meer. Dat is heel lastig met de kalender, want het loopt zo door elkaar heen."

Schulting kwam afgelopen seizoen op de Olympische Spelen in beide disciplines in actie. Na de Spelen veroverde ze op de langebaan de Nederlandse sprinttitel en werd daarna op het WK sprint tweede achter Femke Kok.

HORST (ANP) - Een aanhoudingseenheid van de politie heeft dinsdag een 26-jarige Helmonder aangehouden voor een brand in 2020 in Eindhoven waarbij een jongen zwaargewond raakte. De politie kon de verdachte in het Limburgse Horst aanhouden na nieuw ontvangen informatie.

De brand ontstond doordat een explosief bij de woning aan de Moreelselaan afging. Een jongen van toen 16, die binnen op de bank lag te slapen, liep zeer ernstige verwondingen op. Andere bewoners konden op tijd het huis verlaten.

De politie had snel twee verdachten in beeld. Na een paar maanden werd de eerste verdachte aangehouden. Die is in 2021 veroordeeld voor meervoudige poging tot moord. De toen 18-jarige man gaf toe dat hij de aanslag pleegde met vuurwerk en benzine. Hij had een conflict met het slachtoffer.

In de zaak was een beloning van 10.000 euro uitgeloofd voor de tip die naar de tweede verdachte leidde. Of een tipgever recht heeft op dat bedrag, wordt door het Openbaar Ministerie beoordeeld.

An anonymous reader quotes a report from ArsTechnica: Cable lobby groups notified the Federal Communications Commission that they will sue the agency to block its controversial repeal of the National Television Ownership Rule, which limits the number of broadcast TV stations a single company may own. The cable groups said that larger broadcast TV station groups will have leverage to demand higher retransmission fees from TV providers, resulting in "higher monthly TV bills for consumers." They said the FCC repeal order "arbitrarily and capriciously ignores the harms that will surely follow from allowing broadcast station groups to exceed the National Cap."

The cable lobby groups represent top providers Comcast, Charter, and various other cable operators. Top cable companies have also expanded through mergers. Charter completed a purchase of Cox in August after the FCC rejected protests by advocacy groups that said the cable deal "would create unchecked gatekeeper power over Internet distribution" and make it easier for the biggest cable companies to raise prices. [...] The TV ownership rule prohibits any single broadcast station owner from reaching more than 39 percent of all TV households in the US. Congress directed the FCC to set the cap at 39 percent in 2004. On Friday, cable lobby groups submitted a petition asking the FCC to keep the TV ownership cap in place until litigation over the FCC's authority to repeal the rule is over.

The cable groups' filing said the FCC repeal of the TV ownership cap violates the 2004 action by US lawmakers. The decision by Congress to set the cap at a precise numerical threshold was unambiguous, the filing said. "Congress established the National Cap at 39 percent in the 2004 CAA [Consolidated Appropriations Act] in direct response to the FCC's attempt to aggressively raise the Cap to 45 percent and made repeated references to the 39 percent Cap in the statute," the petition said. The petition to the FCC is mainly a procedural step as the commission isn't likely to stay its own order. The cable groups said they intend to sue the commission in a US appeals court once the FCC order is published in the Federal Register. After the lawsuit is filed, they can ask the court to issue a preliminary injunction that would keep the TV ownership cap in place pending the outcome of litigation.

[...] The cable groups' petition said the FCC can't change the cap because the 2004 law "references the 39 percent Cap as statutory, not regulatory." A provision requiring divestiture of stations "specified that someone exceeding 'the 39 percent national audience reach limitation in paragraph (1)(B)' of 'section 202(c)' of '[t]he Telecommunications Act of 1996' 'shall have not more than 2 years to divest,'" the petition said. "Likewise, Congress singled out the Commission's only mechanism for setting aside statutory requirements -- the Commission's forbearance authority under 47 U.S.C. 160 -- and made clear that it 'shall not apply to any person or entity that exceeds the 39 percent national audience reach limitation,'" the cable lobby petition said. The FCC order argued that the agency's "ability to forbear from enforcement of its rules is distinct from its power to alter or eliminate those rules," and that the FCC forbearance authority doesn't apply to regulation of broadcasters.

Trio and 17-year-old boy convicted of rape after they persuaded girl to travel into Bristol alone and got her drunk

Three men who raped a 17-year-old girl before escaping from the UK to France in the back of a lorry have been sentenced to a total of 33 years in detention.

Mehrab Safi, 21, Salman Habibkheil and Awal Ahmadzai, both 19, and a 17-year-old boy plied the girl with alcohol after she had been persuaded to travel into Bristol alone, and all four raped her at a house in the city.

If you signed up for Trump Mobile, you may be part of an exclusive club of … ransomware victims. Criminals called BYOD claim to have broken into the Trump-branded mobile biz and leaked data belonging to 3,615 people, including names, email addresses, phone numbers, home addresses, and order details. BYOD is a new ransomware-as-a-service operation, and Trump Mobile is only the third organization posted on its data-leak site. According to the group’s posted claim, after telling Trump Mobile that it had been breached, the wireless provider replied: “We have no team to handle this" and “Anyone who hacks them are a terrorist.” “Well unfortunately for them, all 3615 customers and their PII, alongside telecom details are now up for grabs,” the leak site says. “Feel free to take a gander at it yourself, don't be shy, we (and them) certainly aren't stopping you.” The hackers reportedly told International Cyber Digest that they first infected a Liberty Mobile employee with an infostealer, and then accessed Trump Mobile via the MVNO. BYOD claims to still have access to Trump Mobile’s systems, and told the publication that neither wireless provider used any form of multi-factor authentication. Neither the Trump Organization nor Liberty Mobile responded to The Register’s questions about the breach. The data dump doesn’t include any details about US President Donald Trump or his family members, according to Straight Arrow News, which first reported the breach and verified some customers’ information. This could mean that the Trump family doesn’t eat its own dogfood. The leak does, however, include personal information about Eric Brunnett, vice president and chief information officer for the Trump Organization. Brunnett’s LinkedIn profile says he oversees “all Information Technology and Information Security for all aspects of the Trump Organization.” Additionally, one customer contacted by Straight Arrow said he paid a $100 pre-order deposit last year for Trump Mobile’s flagship smartphone, the T1, but never received a gold-colored device. Another criminal group, EndZone, also claimed to have breached Trump Mobile and leaked a stolen dataset a week before BYOD’s post in what “appears to be the same original breach,” according to security sleuth Dominic Alvieri. These aren’t the fledgling mobile phone company's only security snafus. Before these two apparent breaches, a security researcher in May claimed he discovered a now-plugged website vulnerability that leaked Trump Mobile customers’ details. The individual behind the discovery, who goes by "Louis" and described himself as "just a nerd between jobs with too much time on my hands," previously told The Register that the website’s data could be scooped up with a simple POST request.®
