Italian media reported this week that EU members were weighing stricter tourist visa rules after a spike in Russian applications over the summer.

Todd Weaver uses analog & in-camera experimental techniques to achieve subtly geometric and colorful surfing photographs. Of one of his photos, Weaver says:

This one was taken on my half-frame camera at my favourite place to surf, First Point in Malibu. The colour is a one of a kind. I don’t think I could repeat it in a thousand tries. The stripe is an artefact of my pre-exposing process.

Als het begint te kriebelen in je huidige functie, en je wilt een nieuwe stap zetten, hoe doe je dat? Hoe bereid je je voor?

Op veel fronten krijgt de voorzitter van de Europese Commissie kritiek. Die pareert ze in haar belangrijkste rede van het jaar met nieuwe plannen. Voor nostalgie heeft de EU geen tijd, zegt ze: „We kunnen niet wachten totdat de storm voorbijtrekt.”

De NPO gaat in de toekomst flink snijden in de programmering. Daar was tijdens de presentatie van het nieuwe tv-seizoen weinig te merken. Dingen om naar uit te kijken: kinderen die punk maken, het eerste programma met Carice van Houten en de docuserie ‘Fortuyn, On-Hollands’.

Criminaliteit in en rondom voetbalstadions nam tot de coronacrisis af, maar liep na het opheffen van de lockdowns weer op. Hoewel het inmiddels weer rustiger is op de tribunes, lanceert justitie dit seizoen een nieuwe campagne met Meld Misdaad Anoniem.

Niet Rusland, maar Oekraïne heeft de drones afgevuurd die in de nacht van dinsdag op woensdag in Polen zijn neergeschoten. Dat zegt het Kremlin, dat verder benadrukt dat Polen nooit het doel van de droneaanval was en dat de drones niet bestaan.

"Ze zijn verzonnen, het is een hoax", benadrukt Kremlin-woordvoerder Dmitri Peskov. "Er waren geen drones in het Poolse luchtruim, en ze waren daar per ongeluk, omdat ze op weg waren naar het doelwit Oekraïne, van waaruit ze zijn afgevuurd door de Oekraïners, en niet door ons, zij het dat ze niet bestaan."

Moskou zegt later met een uitgebreidere reactie te komen om bots van munitie te voorzien.

Webb caught this view of enormous jets of seething gases erupting from a monster star, resembling a cosmic double-bladed lightsaber.

The jets are moving at hundreds of thousands of miles per hour, stretching across 8 light-years of space, approximately twice the distance between our Sun and the next-nearest stars in the Alpha Centauri system. The star at the center of this is just a baby - a baby 10 times more massive than our Sun! Newly forming stars can build up infalling gas, which is then blasted out along the star’s spin axis, likely due to the influence of its magnetic fields. We’ve observed this phenomenon before in lower mass stars, but spotting a star and jet of this scale is rare.

Astronomers disagree on how massive stars form. This star seems to support the theory that massive stars have a stable disk of material around them, as evidenced by the jets being 180 degrees apart from each other. The competing theory suggests a more chaotic formation process, which would cause the orientation of the disk to change, and the jets would thus also appear to twist and turn in different directions. Additionally, it appears that protostellar jets scale up in size with the mass of the star powering them. The tips of the jet itself also contain information about the star’s beginnings - that material was originally close to the star before it was propelled outwards.

This particular star lies in a proto-star-cluster on the outskirts of the Milky Way, twice the distance from the galactic center as we are. Out there, stars tend to be lacking in heavier elements beyond hydrogen and helium. This makes them good analogs for studying stars in the early universe, which were born into an environment similarly deficient of heavier elements.

Webb’s infrared observations show the jet’s detailed filamentary structure, evidence the jet is plowing into interstellar dust and gas, creating knots, bow shocks, and linear chains.

PARIJS (ANP) - Op het Place du Châtelet in het centrum van Parijs verzamelen zich volgens media veel mensen voor een demonstratie van de protestbeweging 'Bloquons tout' (We blokkeren alles). Onder de aanwezigen is de leider van een grote links-radicale partij Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

De beweging ontstond anoniem en zonder bekende gezichten op sociale media en riep op om Frankrijk op 10 september plat te leggen. Dit als protest tegen het regeringsbeleid en vooral tegen bezuinigingen die de president en zijn premiers willen doorvoeren. Woensdag kreeg Frankrijk weer een nieuwe premier.

Bij ongeregeldheden en blokkades zijn bijna driehonderd mensen gearresteerd. De Parijse politie probeert demonstranten uit het station Gare du Nord te weren. Dat was een doelwit van 'Bloquons tout'. Ook het station Perrache in Lyon werd belaagd. De politie van Marseille voorkwam dat ongeveer zevenhonderd mensen het centrale station Saint-Charles bestormden.

De Franse autoriteiten hebben rekening gehouden met mogelijk 100.000 vooral radicale linkse betogers. De demissionaire Franse binnenlandminister Bruno Retailleau zei dat het een beweging is die is gekaapt door ultralinkse figuren. Er zijn volgens de autoriteiten zevenhonderd manifestaties en 30.000 mensen in het kader van de beweging.

'Bloquons tout' is een geheimzinnig netwerk. Het was niet duidelijk waar blokkades en demonstranten zouden opduiken. In de morgen was de belangrijke autosnelweg A10 bij Poitiers enige tijd door actievoerders geblokkeerd. In Parijs werd voorkomen dat de périphérique werd geblokkeerd. In Lyon werd een ringweg en een stuk van de autosnelweg naar de zon, de A7, geblokkeerd en dat zorgde voor een verkeerschaos.

De vestigingen van de bekende en failliete Italiaanse restaurantketen Vapiano blijven voorlopig open. Per dag wordt bekeken hoe het bedrijf er voorstaat. Dat laat de Rotterdamse curator Fouad el Houzi van advocatenkantoor AKD weten.

Er is een hoop wat je in dit land niet mag zeggen, maar wat je dus wel mag zeggen is dat de veroordeelde terrorist Soumaya Sahla 85.000 euro van Frits Bolkestein (vzmh) heeft ONTFUTSELD. Dat had Martijn Bolkestein gedaan in HP/De Tijd, daar was een rare rechtszaak over en die is nu voorbij met een normale uitspraak. Als je namelijk 85.000 euro hebt gekregen van iemand die zelf niet helemaal meer wist wat hij deed, dan heb je dat geld ontfutseld. Lekker woord wel: ontfutseld. Benieuwd wie ontfutselaar Soumaya Sahla binnenkort gaat aanklagen, nadat ze eerder al keihard nat ging omdat ze geweigerd was voor een baan bij de marine. Mark Rutte (zou vet zijn, red.)?
