DEN HAAG (ANP) - Nog deze maand komt er een nieuw paneel op de Amerikaanse begraafplaats in Margraten, vertelt de Amerikaanse ambassadeur Joseph Popolo vrijdag in een interview met EW Magazine. "En dat gaat specifiek over de rol van Afro-Amerikaanse soldaten die hun leven hebben gegeven voor de bevrijding van Nederland."

Vorig jaar werden door de Amerikaanse beheerder van de begraafplaats twee panelen weggehaald waarop de rol van 'zwarte bevrijders' in de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd belicht. "Soms worden die panelen gewisseld, om andere verhalen naar voren te brengen. Daar zit geen politieke agenda achter", zegt Popolo daarover. "Het is een misvatting dat de bijdrage van Afro-Amerikaanse soldaten zou zijn uitgewist. Er zijn volop plekken waar hun geschiedenis wordt verteld."

L1 meldde vorige maand dat de panelen zouden zijn weggehaald uit angst voor de regering-Trump en niet in opdracht van het Witte Huis zelf. De voorzitter van de American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC), die de begraafplaats beheert, zou zijn staf hebben opgedragen om te voldoen aan een decreet van de Amerikaanse president dat 'discriminerende gelijkheidsideologie' (discriminatory equity ideology) moest tegengaan.

TILBURG (ANP) - De omstreden voorganger Tom de Wal is door de politie weer vrijgelaten. Dat laat hij in een onlinevideo weten. De Wal werd vrijdagavond aangehouden in Tilburg omdat hij er een genezingsdienst hield die door de gemeente verboden was. Hij laat weten dat hij onder meer boetes krijgt.

De gemeente Tilburg liet eerder op de avond weten de samenkomst te hebben verboden, omdat er geen evenementenvergunning was aangevraagd. Toen De Wal toch de dienst door liet gaan, ging de politie de kerk binnen, waarna de aanwezigen vertrokken. Buiten ging De Wal volgens de politie verder met zijn genezingsdienst. Zelf zegt hij dat hij daar voor de mensen op straat is gaan bidden. Hij sprak daar ook kort met Omroep Brabant en werd op dat moment aangehouden. De Wal spreekt in de video van "een bizarre gebeurtenis".

WASHINGTON (ANP) - De Amerikaanse president Donald Trump zegt graag "op de makkelijke manier" een deal te willen sluiten over Groenland, "maar als we het niet op de makkelijke manier doen, dan doen we het op de moeilijke manier", zei de president vrijdag tegen journalisten in het Witte Huis.

Trump herhaalde deze week dat hij het land, dat onderdeel is van het Deense koninkrijk, in bezit wil krijgen. Hij wilde daarbij niet uitsluiten dat de VS militaire middelen zouden gebruiken. Dit zorgde voor veel onrust bij Europese leiders, die hem hebben opgeroepen de territoriale integriteit van het eiland te respecteren.

Op de vraag of hij overwoog met een financieel bod te komen, zei Trump dat hij "nog niet over geld voor Groenland sprak". "Ik zou daar misschien over kunnen praten. Maar voor nu, we gaan iets met Groenland doen, of ze het nu leuk vinden of niet." Volgende week spreekt buitenlandminister Marco Rubio met Denemarken en Groenland.

LEEUWARDEN (ANP) - Nu het KNMI code oranje voor Friesland en Groningen heeft verlengd tot zaterdag 09.00 uur, heeft Qbuzz besloten de bussen in die provincies langer binnen te houden. In Friesland blijven de bussen tot zeker 11.00 uur in de remise, in Groningen tot 09.00 uur. Vrijdag reed Qbuzz de hele dag niet in het noorden vanwege de weersomstandigheden.

De vervoerder bekijkt om 07.00 uur hoe de stand van zaken in Groningen is en om 09.00 uur wordt de situatie in Friesland opnieuw beoordeeld. Ook op de Waddeneilanden is het nog even afwachten of de bussen gaan rijden: Terschelling en Schiermonnikoog kijken om 06.00 uur hoe het ervoor staat met het weer, Vlieland en Ameland om 09.00 uur.

In Drenthe verwacht Qbuzz zaterdag wel volgens dienstregeling op te starten. Wel moeten reizigers ook daar rekening houden met verstoringen "omdat het weer zich niet laat beperken tot provinciegrenzen".

CARACAS (ANP/AFP) - De interim-president van Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, zegt dat haar land de Amerikaanse "agressie" via diplomatie het hoofd zal bieden. De regering van het land kondigde stappen aan om de banden met Washington te herstellen nadat president Nicolás Maduro vorige week werd opgepakt.

In een verklaring meldt Rodríguez dat ze de "ernstige, criminele, illegale en onrechtmatige aanval" door Amerikaanse troepen heeft besproken tijdens een onlinebijeenkomst met leiders uit Brazilië, Colombia en Spanje. "Ik heb herhaald dat Venezuela deze agressie via de diplomatieke weg zal blijven bestrijden."

De Amerikaanse president Donald Trump zei vrijdag plannen voor een mogelijke nieuwe aanval gericht tegen Venezuela te hebben teruggedraaid. Het besluit hing volgens hem samen met de bereidheid tot samenwerking met het Zuid-Amerikaanse land.

An anonymous reader quotes a report from TorrentFreak: Italy's communications regulator AGCOM imposed a record-breaking 14.2 million-euro fine on Cloudflare after the company failed to implement the required piracy blocking measures. Cloudflare argued that filtering its global 1.1.1.1 DNS resolver would be "impossible" without hurting overall performance. AGCOM disagreed, noting that Cloudflare is not necessarily a neutral intermediary either.

[...] "The measure, in addition to being one of the first financial penalties imposed in the copyright sector, is particularly significant given the role played by Cloudflare" AGCOM notes, adding that Cloudflare is linked to roughly 70% of the pirate sites targeted under its regime. In its detailed analysis, the regulator further highlighted that Cloudflare's cooperation is "essential" for the enforcement of Italian anti-piracy laws, as its services allow pirate sites to evade standard blocking measures.

Cloudflare has strongly contested the accusations throughout AGCOM's proceedings and previously criticized the Piracy Shield system for lacking transparency and due process. While the company did not immediately respond to our request for comment, it will almost certainly appeal the fine. This appeal may also draw the interest of other public DNS resolvers, such as Google and OpenDNS. AGCOM, meanwhile, says that it remains fully committed to enforcing the local piracy law. The regulator notes that since the Piracy Shield started in February 2024, 65,000 domain names and 14,000 IP addresses were blocked.

The abstract of a paper on NBER: School boards have statutory authority over most elementary and secondary education policies, but receive little attention compared to other actors in education systems. A fundamental challenge to understanding the importance of boards is the absence of data on the policy goals of board members -- i.e., their ideologies -- forcing researchers to conduct tests based on demographic and professional characteristics -- i.e., identities -- with which ideology is presumed to correlate.

This paper uses new data on the viewpoints and policy actions of school board members, coupled with a regression discontinuity design that generates quasi-random variation in board composition, to establish two results. The first is that the priorities of board members have large causal effects across many domains. For example, the effect of electing an equity-focused board member on test scores for low-income students is roughly equivalent to assigning every such student a teacher who is 0.3 to 0.4 SDs higher in the distribution of teacher value-added. The second is that observing policy priorities is crucial. Identity turns out to be a poor proxy for ideology, with limited governance effects that are fully explained by differences in policy priorities. Our findings challenge the belief that school boards are unimportant, showing that who serves on the board and what they prioritize can have far-reaching consequences for students.

I made several passes before finally finding this on the street between Yodobashi Camera and Grand Front. It is on a street corner with metal fencing in front of it.

This was the final one I needed to find to "collect" all five Kinnikuman manhole covers. If you need help locating these, please reach out. I am also trying to tag them all on Google Maps, but thus far only 2 have been approved.
