Danish actor Trine Dyrholm gives a magnetic performance with all guns blazing in this intensely painful, uncomfortable but also sometimes uncomfortably funny film from writer-director Mads Mengel; it is about a dysfunctional family and is shot in a freewheeling handheld style with lots of looming extreme closeups, a film in the spirit of Thomas Vinterberg’s Dogme 95 classic Festen.

Karl (Simon Bennebjerg) and Emilie (Mette Klakstein) are a young Danish couple with a new baby, and have just arrived at a hip seaside hotel where they are hosting a secular-humanist christening “naming ceremony“ for a large crowd of relatives, one of whom has actually brought along a guitar to perform a song for the infant - a rather Richard Curtis touch. Karl’s sister (Josephine Park) is there, and so are Emilie’s parents (Petrine Agger and Peter Gantzler). The one person who isn’t is Karl’s formidable, emotionally volatile mother Vibeke (played by Dyrholm) who has bipolar disorder and has already been sectioned once.

Perched on a narrow hospital cot across from her son, Bodunwa Orugbemi can hear the distant Atlantic Ocean and smell the stench of crude oil on the air drifting in from the shore. For days, her 21-year-old son has been lying in this hospital in the Niger Delta, swallowing small spoonfuls of food without being able to speak.

Seventy‑year‑old Orugbemi says Ijadopin started coughing one evening in May, inside their small wooden home in Awoye on Nigeria’s Atlantic coastline. After a few days his cough intensified, then he developed a skin irritation, followed by difficulty breathing.

More than 200 arrested in raids, comedian and journalists jailed, gay-friendly cruise turned away and protests banned

Authorities in Turkey have widened a crackdown on public life, arresting more than 200 people during raids across Ankara last month, jailing a comedian and blocking a cruise ship carrying LGBTQ+ passengers from docking in the run-up to the Nato summit in the capital.

The arrests followed a ban on demonstrations in Ankara that was put in place until 10 July. Human Rights Watch (HRW) said this was evidence of Turkey’s “ruthless intolerance of freedom of speech and assembly”. The watchdog group said the Nato summit, which starts on Tuesday, was taking place in the context of intensifying violations of basic rights, “including far-reaching restrictions on the main political opposition party, the media, and freedom of expression in general”.

Babies exposed to higher levels of neurotoxin more likely to have difficulty controlling impulses later, research shows

Exposure to common air pollution may cause childhood obesity because it affects children’s ability to control impulse, new first-of-its-kind peer-reviewed research finds.

Particular matter 2.5 (PM2.5) is a neurotoxin that has been linked to obesity, and Mt Sinai researchers say they have for the first time identified impulse control as a potential pathway. The study found that babies exposed to higher levels of PM2.5 during their first year of life were more likely to develop difficulties with controlling impulses later in childhood.

Britain’s religious right is fuming over a document suggesting the monarch wants to be defender of all faiths. I’m with Charles: what does that make me?

We need to talk about King Charles and specifically this: is the British monarch basically a traitor? Dr Gavin Ashenden is a former chaplain to Queen Elizabeth, and he says he may be. The king is attempting to change the job description of the British monarch from “defender of the faith” to the more inclusive “protector of the space for faith within the multi-faith nation”, and you can see why someone who regularly appears on GB News to lament the “woke takeover” of the church and who suggests that Islam is inherently and uniquely violent would object to this. And then some.

“While the monarch cannot technically be a traitor, we might take refuge in grammar and find that the verb carries our feelings even if the noun cannot,” spluttered Ashenden. “Parliament and the oath it presented to the king as a condition of being crowned are betrayed; the Church of England is betrayed. The constitution is betrayed; Anglicans are specifically betrayed. And Christians in general will legitimately feel abandoned at the very least. Some of them too will feel betrayed.”

Just as it seemed there might be a period of peace, yet another row has broken out between Prince Harry and his family, with one party saying he had accepted an invitation to stay at Buckingham Palace and the other countering within minutes that he would no longer be welcomed.

The Duke of Sussex is to visit London and Birmingham for a series of charity engagements including promoting the Invictus Games. The ‌buildup to the trip has been overshadowed by a dispute with the government over security, and a spokesperson for the prince saying on Sunday that the Duchess of Sussex and the couple’s children would not join him in London, but could do later when he visited Birmingham.

Case of Mark Nelson, 46, is one of first since new measures were announced in last week’s immigration bill

A Jamaican man who has lived more than half his life in the UK is facing deportation to his home country in one of the first cases since new anti-immigration measures were announced in last week’s immigration bill.

Mark Nelson, 46, came to the UK in 2000 and set up his own car mechanic business. He has five British children and a British partner. In 2017, he received a four-year prison sentence for growing cannabis plants, something he said he did after his business experienced financial problems. He has not committed any further offences.

"Alles wat je compliceert, vertraagt. Als je tempo wil maken, dan houd je het graag simpel, zo min mogelijk subgroepjes." Dat was ook de beleidsmakers duidelijk, zei Van Delden. Hij zei zich geen concrete verzoeken te herinneren om door te rekenen wat het voor de vaccinatiestrategie zou betekenen om wel meer groepen voorrang te geven.

GENÈVE (ANP/AFP) - De Mensenrechtenraad van de Verenigde Naties laat met spoed een onderzoek instellen naar de situatie in het Soedanese el-Obeid. Die strategisch gelegen stad wordt belegerd door de paramilitaire RSF en er wordt gevreesd voor grootschalige gruweldaden.

De raad nam een resolutie aan waarin werd gewaarschuwd dat honderdduizenden burgers gevaar lopen. Het gaat naast inwoners van de stad ook om ontheemden die er naartoe zijn gevlucht.

In de resolutie worden ook de vele aanvallen met drones veroordeeld die zijn gemeld in el-Obeid en die ook ziekenhuizen zouden treffen. Ook hekelt de raad het grootschalige seksueel geweld en de berichten dat uithongering als oorlogstactiek wordt gebruikt.

Schendingen internationaal recht

De raad wil dat onderzoekers gaan kijken of sprake is van schendingen van het internationaal recht. Er moet dan in september verslag worden uitgebracht bij de raad en bij de Algemene Vergadering van de Verenigde Naties.

Internationaal wordt al langer gevreesd voor een herhaling van de gebeurtenissen in el-Fasher, een andere stad in het door burgeroorlog geteisterde land. De RSF veroverde die stad in oktober. Daarna volgden berichten over gruweldaden die volgens experts kenmerken van genocide hadden.

Miljoenen op de vlucht

In Soedan woedt sinds 2023 een strijd tussen de RSF en het regeringsleger. Miljoenen mensen zijn gevlucht voor het geweld. El-Obeid ligt aan een route die RSF-gebied verbindt met regio's die in handen zijn van de krijgsmacht.

De raad roept in de resolutie ook op tot een wapenstilstand tussen de strijdende partijen. De Britse gezant Eleanor Sanders presenteerde de tekst namens meerdere landen en pleitte daarbij voor concrete stappen. Ze zei dat "het niet langer volstaat om enkel onze schok en bezorgdheid te uiten".

EPE (ANP) - Budgetwinkelketen Wibra heeft in 2025 opnieuw een recordjaar neergezet, waarbij het winkelbestand ook verder toenam. De omzet steeg met meer dan een kwart tot 362 miljoen euro vergeleken met een jaar eerder. Daarnaast openden vorig jaar 63 Wibra-winkels, waarmee het totaal groeide tot 360 vestigingen.

De omzetgroei is te danken aan hogere verkopen van bestaande winkels en ook door de opening van nieuwe locaties. De operationele winst ging eveneens met ruim een kwart omhoog tot iets meer dan 16 miljoen euro.

De meeste winkels zijn in Nederland, in 2025 waren dat er 287. In België ging het om 71 winkels en in Frankrijk 2. In 2024 opende Wibra zijn eerste Franse vestiging.

"De cijfers bevestigen dat de investeringen in winkels, logistiek en het verder aanscherpen van de formule aansluiten bij de behoeften van huishoudens in Nederland, België en Frankrijk", aldus Wibra.

Data on more than 2.3 million people associated with Moody Bible Institute (MBI) has been exposed online after the Christian college was targeted by ShinyHunters. The attack was first disclosed by MBI in June, and the extortion crew later leaked the stolen data. Have I Been Pwned has since added the cache to its breach notification database, putting a figure on the number of exposed accounts. MBI is one of many victims of ShinyHunters' pay-or-leak attacks in 2026, and while the organization has not explicitly commented on whether it negotiated with the criminals, the leak suggests that the group's extortion demands were not met. Broadly consistent with ShinyHunters' claims, the MBI data made available for download on June 23 includes names, genders, dates of birth, physical and email addresses, phone numbers, and marital statuses. The cache also included documents concerning donor relations, MBI's supporters, students, and alumni. MBI has not spoken publicly since June 22, the day before ShinyHunters leaked its files. The organization stated that its tech team had addressed a vulnerability and brought in external cybersecurity experts to help with its incident response. It urged those affiliated with MBI to monitor their accounts and make use of free credit freezes and fraud alerts until it had completed its investigation. "Throughout this process, we are grateful for the Lord's faithfulness and for the dedicated teams and outside experts working tirelessly to protect our ministry and those we serve," said MBI. "We are confident that God remains sovereign over every circumstance, and we trust Him to grant wisdom and discernment as we navigate this situation together." MBI has various operations, or "ministries." Chief among them is its university, which offers undergraduate, graduate, and online courses for those pursuing ministry work. It also offers aviation courses with a theology component. More than 250,000 students have studied at MBI since it was first established in 1886. It also runs Moody Radio, a Christian radio network/station, and a publishing arm devoted to Christian literature. ShinyHunters' leak site lists 86 victims since January, although the number for the year is likely higher, since those who paid extortion fees would be removed from the list of breached organizations. The group has been linked to high-profile attacks involving Salesforce, Carnival, and Pitney Bowes. The gang has also claimed that a Oracle PeopleSoft campaign affected more than 100 organizations, and cited a PeopleSoft breach in the details about its attack on MBI. National security alerts were issued about ShinyHunters earlier in the year following its attack on learning platform Canvas, which compromised the data of an estimated 275 million students. ®
