SILVERSTONE (ANP) - Max Verstappen heeft weer eens zijn klasse bewezen in de kwalificatie. De viervoudig wereldkampioen veroverde toch wel verrassend poleposition voor de Grote Prijs van Groot-Brittannië. De Formule 1-coureur van Red Bull was op het circuit van Silverstone 0,103 seconde sneller dan kampioenschapsleider Oscar Piastri van McLaren, die de tweede tijd reed. Lando Norris van McLaren klokte de derde tijd in de kwalificatie.
Verstappen wil in Silverstone graag de nare smaak wegspoelen van zijn vroege uitvalbeurt vorige week in de GP van Oostenrijk. Hij raakte door de nulscore op de thuisbaan van zijn team Red Bull verder achterop bij Piastri, die het kampioenschap leidt met 216 punten. Verstappen staat derde met 155 punten.
Het is de 44e pole voor Verstappen in zijn Formule 1-carrière en die was eigenlijk niet verwacht, want in de trainingen liet Verstappen nogal wat tijd liggen op zijn naaste concurrenten. De Limburger reed in de kwalificatie aanvankelijk moeizaam. "De auto doet zo moeilijk", mopperde hij over de boordradio. Toch was hij op het winderige circuit van Silverstone de enige die in de beslissende sessie van de kwalificatie een foutloos rondje uit zijn auto perste. Piastri en Norris waren ook snel en Lewis Hamilton deed in zijn Ferrari eveneens een verwoede poging de snelste ronde te rijden, maar zij maakten wel foutjes.
"Het was lastig met die wind, die draaide alle kanten op en daar zijn de auto's zeer gevoelig voor. Dit is een echt circuit en als je voluit gaat, moet je bijzonder scherp zijn", zei de Limburger in het flashinterview. "Dit is wel een opsteker. De auto is behoorlijk snel op het rechte stuk, maar het is afwachten hoe het in de race zal gaan. Ik ga mijn best doen en heb er zin in."
DAMASCUS (ANP/RTR/AFP) - Het Verenigd Koninkrijk herstelt de diplomatieke betrekkingen met Syrië. De Britse minister van Buitenlandse Zaken David Lammy zei dat na een ontmoeting met de Syrische leider Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus.
"Er is hernieuwde hoop voor het Syrische volk. Het Verenigd Koninkrijk herstelt de diplomatieke betrekkingen omdat het in ons belang is om de nieuwe regering te steunen bij het nakomen van hun belofte om een stabiele, veiligere en welvarender toekomst op te bouwen voor alle Syriërs", zei Lammy in een verklaring. Ook het kantoor van Al-Sharaa laat weten dat de twee hebben gesproken over de banden tussen beide landen.
In december vorig jaar werd in Syrië dictator Assad verdreven en kwam er na dertien jaar burgeroorlog een einde aan zijn regime. Onder de nieuwe machthebber Al-Sharaa zoekt het land weer aansluiting bij het wereldtoneel. Het VK hief de afgelopen maanden al meerdere sancties tegen Syrië op. Ook de VS hebben de sancties tegen Syrië opgeheven.
Jasper Philipsen heeft de eerste etappe van de Tour de France gewonnen. Het was een vlakke rit met start en finish in Lille. De Belgische ploeggenoot van Mathieu van der Poel bij Alpecin-Deceuninck is daarmee de eerste geletruidrager. Hij versloeg in de sprint de Eritreeër Biniam Girmay en de Noor Søren Wærenskjold.
Voor Philipsen is het de tiende ritoverwinning in de Tour. Vorig jaar won hij drie etappes.
Zondag volgt een rit van Lauwin-Planque naar Boulogne-sur-Mer met twee hellinkjes in de laatste 10 kilometer terwijl ook de finishstraat omhoog loopt.

Charles Leclerc topped the third and final practice session ahead of the British Grand Prix, which was disrupted by two red flags.
"When I first saw the lead concentrations, they were so high I thought our instrument was broken," Salazar said. [...]
"We found that these disposable devices have toxins already present in the e-liquid, or they're leaching quite extensively from their components into e-liquids and ultimately transferred to the smoke," Salazar said.
Leaded bronze alloy components in some devices leached nickel and lead to the e-liquid. Nickel was also released from heating coils, and antimony was present in unused e-liquids at high levels, both of which increase the risk of cancer.
The researchers also assessed the health risk for daily users. Vapors from three of the devices had nickel levels and two devices had antimony levels that exceeded cancer risk limits. Vapors from four of the devices had nickel and lead emissions that surpassed health-risk thresholds for illnesses besides cancer, such as neurological damage and respiratory diseases.
I'll bet Bobby Brainworms think you need a lot more lead and antimony supplements in your diet. But he's not going to state that outright, he's just asking questions...

- Tech companies: Palantir, IBM, Amazon, Alphabet (Google's parent company), Microsoft, and HP. "In July 2024, an Israeli colonel described cloud tech as 'a weapon in every sense of the word,' citing these companies."
- Military contractors: Elbit Systems (which does a brisk business in the UK), Lockheed Martin, Japanese robotics manufacturer FANUC, and shipping company A.P. Moller - Maersk. "Lockheed Martin F-35 and F-16 fighter jets, pivotal to the Israeli air force, have significant carrying and fire capacity, including the 2000lb GBU-31 JDAM bombs and, for F-35s, over 18,000lb of bombs at a time."

"Since October 2023, Caterpillar equipment has been documented in use carrying out mass demolitions – including of homes, mosques and life-sustaining infrastructure – raid hospitals and crushing Palestinians to death. In 2025, Caterpillar secured a further multi-million dollar contract with Israel."
- Infrastructure / building / real estate companies: Spain's Construcciones Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles and real estate giant Keller Williams. "In March 2024, Keller Williams, via another franchisee, Home in Israel, ran a real estate roadshow in the US and Canada, co-sponsored by several companies developing and marketing thousands of apartments in colonies."
- Energy multinationals: Drummond, Swiss Clencore, Chevron, and BP. "t a time of increasing brutality, British BP p.l.c. is expanding involvement in the Israeli economy, with exploration licences confirmed in March 2025, which allow BP to explore Palestinian maritime expanses illegally exploited by Israel."
- Agribusiness: China's Bright Dairy & Food Co. Ltd., Netafim (owned by Mexico's Orbia Advance Corporation). "In the Jordan Valley, Netafim-aided irrigation systems have facilitated Israeli crop expansion, while Palestinian farmers – denied water and with 93 per cent unirrigated land – are pushed out, unable to compete with Israeli production."
- Travel platforms: Booking.com and AirBnB. "Booking.com has more than doubled its listings – from 26 in 2018 to 70 by May 2023 – and tripled its east Jerusalem listings to 39 in the year post-October 2023."
- Financial sector: BNP Paribas, Barclays, Blackrock, Vanguard, PIMCO, Allianz, AXA. "Vanguard is the largest institutional investor in Caterpillar (9.8 per cent), Chevron (8.9 per cent) and Palantir (9.1 per cent), and second largest in Lockheed Martin (9.2 per cent) and Elbit Systems (2.0 per cent)."
- Institutions of higher education: MIT, University of Edinburgh, Technical University of Munich. "At MIT, labs conduct weapons and surveillance research funded by the Israeli Ministry of Defense (IMOD) – the only foreign military financing MIT research. Notable IMOD-projects include drone swarm control – a distinct feature of the Israeli assault on Gaza since October 2023 – pursuit algorithms, and underwater surveillance."
- Don't pay for anything that these companies deliver. If you're reading this, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft are probably high on your daily-use list. Stop subscribing and find alternatives like Proton, AliExpress, and NextCloud. Encourage others to do the same.
- Review your investment holdings, including ETF and mutual fund holdings, for these companies. Divest as soon as possible. Encourage others to do the same.
- Review your 401k's funds for these companies. If they're present, and they probably are, gather some of your coworkers , research some fund and platform options, and meet with your HR team to discuss a change.
