Amazon Web Services (AWS) is experiencing another outage after a CloudFront issue began throwing 5xx errors, knocking a string of websites and online services offline across multiple regions. According to AWS, the issue began at 0145 PDT (0945 UTC) this morning and affects CloudFront customers using VPC Origins. This is a relatively new CloudFront feature that lets customers serve applications running behind private load balancers through CloudFront without exposing their back-end infrastructure to the public internet. The cloud giant said customers using other origin types are not impacted, and suggested that anyone who doesn't strictly need VPC Origins could switch origin types as a temporary workaround while engineers work on a fix. “We are experiencing increased 5xx errors for CloudFront customers utilizing VPC Origins connectivity,” the cloud giant said on its service status page. “Our engineers are engaged and are actively working to mitigate impact." At 03:18 PDT (118BST, 1018 UTC), it added: "We continue working to resolve the increased 5xx errors for CloudFront customers utilizing VPC Origins connectivity. Customers utilizing other origin types remain unaffected by this issue. "Based on our investigation, we believe the root cause is related to a packet processing subsystem responsible for routing requests from CloudFront's edge locations to resources within customer VPCs. We continue to recommend that customers who are able to do so temporarily change their origin type to resolve the errors." It promised another update in the next hour. Users trying to reach sites affected by the CloudFront issues are being met with an error page that reads: “We can't connect to the server for this app or website at this time. There might be too much traffic or a configuration error. Try again later, or contact the app or website” Among the early casualties was the AI developer platform Hugging Face, which acknowledged that its service was unavailable "from most regions in the world" due to the AWS outage while it worked on mitigation. Meanwhile, the UK's National Lottery admitted in a post on X that players were unable to access its website and mobile app due to what it described as a wider AWS outage, advising hopeful millionaires to try refreshing later. Gamers weren't spared either. Reports quickly piled up on Reddit from Fallout 76 players wondering why Bethesda's post-apocalyptic wasteland had become more inaccessible than usual, while various other threads rapidly filled with reports from disgruntled AWS customers, all describing the same symptom: CloudFront distributions returning 5xx errors while other AWS services carried on as normal. AWS had not disclosed the cause of the borkage and didn’t immediately respond to The Register’s questions. While it said the outage was limited to one CloudFront configuration, the list of broken services made it look considerably less limited. ®

The operator of the .ME domain registry has confirmed that Telegram's t.me shortlinks stopped working for around a day while the messaging platform verified that links associated with a sanctioned VPN service had been removed. The US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated First VPN Service (1VPNS) on July 13 for selling services to ransomware groups and other cybercriminals. Shortly after, users across the app reported problems with t.me links, which Telegram uses to share links to channels, groups, and profiles. Founder and CEO Pavel Durov publicly asked the .ME domain registry to look into it and Domain.Me confirmed the issues were related to OFAC sanctions. "The .ME Registry works closely with law enforcement to monitor and mitigate issues across the .ME domain in accordance with applicable laws, including sanctions requirements," Domain.Me stated via X. "On 13 July, 1VPNS was included as a sanctioned entity by the US Department of the Treasury. A Telegram channel using the t.me domain was among 1VPNS identified infrastructure. Accordingly, the t.me domain was suspended. "On 14 July, Telegram provided confirmation that it had removed its links and affiliations with 1VPNS. Once the confirmation was reviewed and verified, the suspension was removed from the t.me domain. "We appreciate Telegram's prompt cooperation in resolving this matter." The registrar did not specify which Telegram channel or group was identified as 1VPNS infrastructure. However, given that the service ran its own Telegram channel/account, and that group had its own t.me link that was also included verbatim in OFAC's sanction announcement, it seems likely that this was the reason for the domain-wide disruption. After European law enforcement agencies took 1VPNS's infrastructure offline in May, authorities said the service, whose administrator was based in Dnipro, Ukraine, had been used by at least 25 ransomware groups, including Avaddon, for network reconnaissance and intrusions. Edvardas Šileris, head of Europol's European Cybercrime Centre, said at the time: "For years, cybercriminals saw this VPN service as a gateway to anonymity. They believed it would keep them beyond the reach of law enforcement. This operation proves them wrong. "Taking it offline removes a critical layer of protection that criminals depended on to operate, communicate, and evade law enforcement." According to the FBI, which supported the France and Netherlands-led takedown, 1VPNS was advertised almost exclusively on criminal dark web forums and used for activity beyond ransomware. The service allegedly enabled scammers, botnet traffic, denial-of-service attacks, scanning operations, and more since it began operating around 2014. OFAC designated 1VPNS and its administrator, Dmytro Rashevskyi, on Monday. It also sanctioned Yevgeniy Vladimirovich Silayev for selling cryptors – tools designed to disguise ransomware and other malware so they evade detection by security software. The announcement of the sanctions stated that ransomware groups used both services, causing billions of dollars in losses to US businesses and critical infrastructure providers. Gene Lange, senior counselor to the Secretary of the Treasury, who is also performing the duties of the Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, said: "Under President Trump's leadership, Treasury is using every available tool to disrupt the cybercriminal ecosystem and protect the American people. "We will continue targeting the actors who enable ransomware attacks against Americans and our critical infrastructure." ®

De rechtbank in Rotterdam heeft cryptoplatform Knaken uit Rotterdam failliet verklaard. Volgens het Openbaar Ministerie ontbreekt zeven miljoen euro aan tegoeden van klanten. Het faillissement was aangevraagd door het Openbaar Ministerie, omdat die de gang van zaken bij het bedrijf niet vertrouwde.

Bij een woningoverval aan de Madeliefstraat in Rotterdam heeft de politie woensdagavond een waarschuwingsschot gelost bij de aanhouding van twee verdachten. Het gaat om twee jongens van 15 en 16 jaar uit Rotterdam. Een 27-jarige bewoner raakte gewond.

En u maar denken dat "hitte-ongelijkheid" tot de NRC beperkt zou blijven. Het aantal hittedoden gaat naar verwachting dan misschien VERDUBBELEN, maar laten deze zongedreven oversterfte wel gewoon netjes nivelleren. Wethouder Lian Heinhuis van uiteraard PRO Amsterdam zegt bovendien dat airco's klimaatverandering zullen verergeren, "want Europa staat gewoon letterlijk in de fik". Ook zegt ze: "Als iedereen in Amsterdam, daar is onderzoek naar geweest, een airco zou hebben in het centrum, dan wordt de buitentemperatuur tot 2 graden warmer. Dus wat je dan krijgt, is dat die mensen in het centrum die geen airco kunnen betalen, die hebben het nog heter in huis. Dus daarmee vergroot je alleen maar die ongelijkheid."

Opmerkelijk: dat onderzoek stelt dat als IEDEREEN in het centrum een airco heeft, de temperatuur met 2 graden stijgt, dus in dat scenario zijn er geen mensen die deze airco niet kunnen betalen, en daardoor lijden onder hitte-ongelijkheid. Maar goed, het klopt natuurlijk wel dat massale airco-inzet de temperatuur in wijken verhoogt, en er valt wel degelijk een discussie te voeren over tot welke verzadigingsgraad die uitruil het waard blijft. En meer bomen in de straten kunnen we altijd en overal alleen maar voor zijn. 

Overigens: Nederland is al Europa's airco-kampioen. "TNO schat dat in 2030 ruim 40 procent van de huishoudens ten minste één airco heeft en dat het totaal aantal airco’s dan op circa 6,3 miljoen uitkomt. In 2021 had nog maar 20 procent van de huishoudens een airco. Bijna 90 procent van de vaste airco’s in Nederland is in de afgelopen vijf jaar geïnstalleerd."
