Een masseur van een massagesalon in Rotterdam is begin dit jaar ontslagen nadat hij meerdere vrouwen op intieme lichaamsdelen heeft aangeraakt. Hij stapte naar de rechter, maar die heeft bepaald dat de man terecht is ontslagen. Ook wordt hij verantwoordelijk gehouden voor de reputatie- en omzetschade aan de salon.

England’s rugby players are threatening to walk off the pitch in protest against Argentina on Saturday if there is any repeat of the racial abuse aimed at black squad members on their last visit a year ago. Further incidents will not be tolerated and, according to England’s captain, Jamie George, will prompt “the strongest of reactions”.

George was also present in San Juan last July when his replacement prop forward Asher Opoku-Fordjour and Chandler Cunningham-South were the target of racist slurs from a group of home supporters during the warm-up and the first half of the second Test. World Rugby later confirmed England had made a complaint, but, despite an investigation, the individual perpetrators could not be identified.

Casting has come a long way since the early 1980s when it was somehow still acceptable to sign up Max von Sydow to play Ming the Merciless in Flash Gordon in 1980, or hire Peter Ustinov as the lead in Charlie Chan and the Curse of the Dragon Queen in 1981 (despite protests at the time). These days, film-makers will have to defend an all-white cast in a medieval fantasy flick, which appears to be what has happened this week to The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’s Andy Serkis.

Asked by the BBC why every major casting for the new film has been a white actor, Serkis appeared to lay the blame on his literary source material. “Tolkien himself was influenced a lot by Norse mythology, there’s a lot of that feeling,” he said. “The Shire feels very, very much like a very, a very white, you know … They’re not very concerned about what goes on beyond the borders of the Shire, but they know they don’t want people coming in.

Spain’s streak started after a defeat in 2024 but Argentina are no slouches – they are on an unbeaten run of 14 matches

Spain look unstoppable. Their 2-0 victory against France meant they have not lost a game in normal or extra time for 37 matches, which Opta revealed has equalled the best such stretch by a European team. However, Spain did lose the final of the 2025 Nations League to Portugal on penalties.

Their “unbeaten run” matches the efforts of Italy between October 2018 and September 2021, a streak which included Roberto Mancini’s side winning Euro 2020. Unlike Spain, Italy were truly unbeaten.

The day I met Ruth Madeley in a hotel in central London was the peak of the last heatwave, the buttons on traffic lights almost too hot to touch. Eerily, this is a major theme of The Rapture, the BBC’s new adaptation of Liz Jensen’s 2009 bestseller. It’s set in a children’s secure psychiatric unit, and the 38-year-old actor plays Gabs, a clinical psychologist recently paralysed in a car accident that killed her husband. She becomes transfixed by the inmate Bethany – a surly, biting performance from India Amarteifio – who has been convicted of killing her own mother. Gabs is hard-boiled, as far from gullible as you could imagine, and Bethany’s “visions”, which pour out of her in frenetic drawings of faces, disasters, landscapes, don’t fall on fertile ground. Yet Gabs cannot help but notice when they start to come true.

In the background, the heat is stultifying and climate crisis activists are begging the world to take notice. “Yes, it’s feeling very timely,” she says wryly. This is on-brand; her first major role was in Russell T Davies’s Years and Years, the apocalyptic smash hit that ends with a monkey flu pandemic (sorry, spoiler), “and then a year later we were in lockdown. I told Russell: ‘You’re not allowed to write anything else, my nerves can’t take it.’”

Moderne problemen vragen om moderne oplossingen. Het adres aan de Bos en Lommerweg in Amsterdam west werd afgelopen tijd getroffen door o.a. een beschieting en explosie. De politie vermoedt dat ene 'Achie de Somaliër' het beoogde doelwit was. maar wat blijkt? DIE WOONT HIER NIET. Dus ducttapet Politie Amsterdam het maar gewoon op de voordeur:

"Achie de Somaliër wont NIET op dirt adres. Er is sprake van een vergissing met betrekking tot het adres. De bewoners hebben geen enkelere elatie met of betrokkenheid bij Achie."

AT5 schrijft: "Er vielen nog geen gewonden bij de aanslagen, hoewel een bewoner bij de beschieting thuis was. Wie Achie de Somaliër is, anders dan het beoogde doelwit, kon de woordvoerder nog niet zeggen." Wij weten ook niet wie Achie is, maar we durven wel aan dat hij uit Somalië komt.

The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has ruled that Google may not be able to claim intermediary liability protection for YouTube content it reviews as part of a commercial partnership with a creator. The case stems from a €750,000 fine imposed on Google Ireland by Italy's communications regulator in 2022 over YouTube videos promoting online gambling. Before entering the revenue-sharing agreement, under which Google placed pre-roll ads on the creator's videos, the company reviewed the channel's content. The regulator argued that this examination undermined Google's claim that it acted as a neutral intermediary exempt from liability. Google appealed against the fine, and the case was referred to the CJEU. The court rejected Mountain View's reading of the liability exemption, leaving Italy's Council of State to decide the dispute. The exemption still applies where "the service provider has neither knowledge of nor control over the information which is transmitted or stored." However, in this instance, Google was aware of the content. The court held that the exemption "does not apply" to a platform operator that agreed commercial terms with a channel where the operator "carried out an examination of the content of that channel," including its main theme, its most-viewed or newest videos, or the associated metadata. In effect, the ruling limits Google's ability to rely on its "intermediary service provider" defense when it has reviewed a channel as part of a commercial partnership. In those circumstances, the platform may be unable to claim the liability exemption for the content at issue. This doesn't mean Google is liable for everything on YouTube, but the megacorp needs to be more careful with channels where it has commercial deals that come with a level of content review and specific knowledge that can forfeit intermediary status. A Google spokesperson said: "We are disappointed by the CJEU's decision, which we will need further clarity on. We ⁠will raise our arguments before the Council of State." ®

Een zwangere vrouw die in mei tijdens een politieoptreden in een asielzoekerscentrum in Zeist hard tegen de grond werd getrokken, doet aangifte tegen de betrokken agenten. Volgens haar advocaat gaat het om mishandeling of poging tot zware mishandeling en schending van de geweldsinstructie. De vrouw stelt dat zij na het incident vroegtijdige weeën kreeg en psychisch letsel opliep.

Die aangifte is belangrijk, los van de vraag hoe een rechter uiteindelijk over deze zaak zal oordelen. Ze legt namelijk een fundamenteler probleem bloot: de manier waarop de politie reageert wanneer er serieuze vragen worden gesteld over het eigen geweldsgebruik.

Vrijwel direct na het incident volgde de boodschap dat het geweld “noodzakelijk” was. Later bleek dat een interne geweldscommissie tot dezelfde conclusie was gekomen. Op de vraag of het geweld ook proportioneel en volgens de regels was toegepast, gaf de politie geen inhoudelijk antwoord. Dat zou onderdeel zijn van een interne procedure die niet openbaar wordt gemaakt.

En dat is gek. De politie beschikt als enige organisatie over het wettelijke geweldsmonopolie. Dat is een uitzonderlijke positie, gebaseerd op vertrouwen. Burgers accepteren dat agenten geweld mogen gebruiken omdat zij ervan uit mogen gaan dat elk gebruik van geweld onafhankelijk, kritisch en transparant wordt beoordeeld.

Dat vraagt om een andere reflex dan de reflex die veel organisaties kennen: eerst de rijen sluiten, daarna pas kijken wat er precies is gebeurd. En dat laatste is wat de politie te vaak lijkt te doen.

Natuurlijk verdienen agenten bescherming tegen voorbarige veroordelingen. Politiewerk vindt plaats onder hoge druk, met onvolledige informatie en soms in gevaarlijke situaties. Niemand heeft er baat bij dat iedere agent na elk incident onmiddellijk publiekelijk wordt afgeschreven.

En daarom is transparantie zo belangrijk. Wie zorgvuldig onderzoek doet, hoeft een kritische beoordeling niet te vrezen. Wanneer de uitkomst luidt dat het optreden correct was, versterkt openheid juist het vertrouwen. Wanneer fouten zijn gemaakt, versterkt erkenning dat vertrouwen eveneens. De enige uitkomst die vrijwel altijd wantrouwen oproept, is: “vertrouw ons, we hebben onszelf onderzocht.”

Dat geldt des te sterker wanneer er videobeelden bestaan waarop het optreden voor veel mensen buitenproportioneel oogt. Dan is een summiere mededeling dat alles intern is beoordeeld simpelweg onvoldoende. Het publiek hoeft geen operationele details of persoonsgegevens te kennen, wel de afwegingen die hebben geleid tot de conclusie dat het geweld gerechtvaardigd was.

Een geweldsmonopolie is geen privilege dat alleen bevoegdheden geeft. Het legt ook een zwaardere verantwoordingsplicht op dan voor iedere andere organisatie geldt. Juist omdat de politie namens ons allemaal geweld mag gebruiken, hoort zij een hogere standaard van openheid na te streven.

Loyaliteit aan collega’s is een begrijpelijke menselijke reflex. Voor een organisatie met het geweldsmonopolie mag die reflex nooit belangrijker worden dan de zichtbare bereidheid om eigen handelen kritisch te onderzoeken en daar publiekelijk verantwoording over af te leggen.
