Today’s ESA/Hubble Picture of the Week features the spiral galaxy NGC 4535, which is situated about 50 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo (The Maiden). This galaxy has been nicknamed the ‘Lost Galaxy’ because it’s extremely faint when viewed through a small telescope. With a mirror spanning 2.4 metres across, Hubble is well equipped to observe dim galaxies like NGC 4535 and pick out features like its massive spiral arms and central bar of stars.

On full display in this Hubble image are NGC 4535’s young star clusters, which dot the galaxy’s spiral arms. Many of the groupings of bright blue stars are enclosed by glowing pink clouds. These clouds, called H II (‘H-two’) regions, are a sign that the galaxy is home to especially young, hot, and massive stars that are blazing with high-energy radiation. By heating the clouds in which they were born, shooting out powerful stellar winds, and eventually exploding as supernovae, massive stars certainly shake up their surroundings.

This Hubble image incorporates data from an observing programme that will catalogue roughly 50 000 H II regions in nearby star-forming galaxies like NGC 4535. A previous image of NGC 4535 was released in 2021. Both the 2021 image and today’s image incorporate observations from the PHANGS programme, which seeks to understand the connections between young stars and cold gas. Today’s image adds a new dimension to our understanding of NGC 4535 by capturing the brilliant red glow of the nebulae that encircle massive stars in their first few million years of life.

The Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission takes us over one of Earth’s most extreme environments: the Danakil Depression in Ethiopia.

Located in northeastern Ethiopia, near the border with Eritrea, the Danakil Depression lies between the Danakil Alps on the east and the Ethiopian Plateau on the west. It is a plain formed by the continental drift of three tectonic plates, thinning Earth’s crust as they pull apart.

This tectonic setting, called the Afar Triple Junction, is responsible for shaping the region's diverse geological features. Due to its unique geology, Danakil’s landscape features a combination of salt flats, desert shrubland and active volcanoes, producing hot, acidic springs with vibrantly coloured mineral pools.

Danakil is known for being one of the lowest, hottest and driest places on Earth. It sits at an average of 120 m below sea level, with annual temperatures sometimes reaching above 50°C. It receives very little rainfall, with most of it evaporating quickly.

This false-colour image from 7 August 2025 shows the northern part of the Danakil Depression.

The various shades of green reflect the different surface types, showing evidence of ancient marine and river systems across the whole image. Lighter greens denote older geology, while darker tones indicate younger terrains.

The pink expanse denotes a complex hydrothermal system formed by the hot springs and the acidic ponds in the area. The green feature at its centre is Dallol, a depression hosting a cinder cone volcano. Dallol is frequently referred to as one of the most inhospitable and hottest inhabited places on Earth.

At the bottom of the image, two lakes – Karum and, further south, Bakili – can be seen in black, as the image was processed using Sentinel-2’s near-infrared channel which makes water bodies appear dark or black.

Southwest of Lake Karum rises Gada Ale, a 287-m-high stratovolcano built of lava and ash. Its gently sloping sides of basaltic lava appear in a dark hue, with the youngest flows being the darkest colours.

Due to its extreme conditions, visiting and studying this area can be quite challenging. From their vantage point in space, Earth orbserving satellites, such as Copernicus Sentinel-2, are the perfect tool to systematically image and monitor such remote and unique environments.

How do you prepare for life on the Moon? Start with a flight that bends gravity.

ESA’s 88th parabolic flight campaign took off from Bordeaux, France, for three flights dedicated to lunar gravity research aboard the Airbus A310 Zero-G aircraft. Sponsored by ESA, this campaign gave scientists hands-on time with experiments that will shape how we can live and work on the Moon.

Before leaving Earth, parabolic flights offer a way to simulate the Moon’s gravity—about one-sixth of Earth’s pull. During this lunar campaign, nine experiments tackled big questions, from how blood flows and muscles adapt in partial gravity to how astronauts regain balance and coordination after prolonged immobility.

Research explored how crews could manage injuries without specialists by their side, fire safety in lunar habitats, wearable suits to counteract fluid shifts, and technologies for sorting, moving, and excavating lunar soil to build and extract resources.

Originally designed for astronaut training, parabolic flights now primarily serve science and technology. By flying along a special trajectory, the aircraft creates short periods of reduced gravity, up to 22 seconds of weightlessness for zero-g flights, mimicking the floating experience of the International Space Station, or slightly longer for the partial gravity experienced on the Moons (0.16 g). During these windows, researchers can run experiments in physiology, biology, fluid physics and engineering, gaining insights that ground tests cannot provide.

In the near future, the European Service Module will propel astronauts aboard Orion to the Gateway in lunar orbit and ESA's Argonaut landers will deliver cargo and payloads to the Moon. To make those missions safe and successful, scientists and engineers need to understand how people and technology behave in lunar conditions.

This effort is strengthened by the growing research and testing capabilities of the ESA-DLR LUNA facility in Cologne, Germany—a Moon-analogue environment for surface operations. Soon equipped with a gravity off-loading system to simulate the Moon’s gravity, LUNA will enable astronauts to train for realistic lunar scenarios. These combined ESA initiatives mark a major step toward making future lunar missions safer, smarter and more sustainable.

BELÉM (ANP) - Enkele tientallen landen roepen op de klimaattop in het Braziliaanse Belém vrijdagochtend (lokale tijd) op tot concrete afspraken over hoe de wereld een einde gaat maken aan het gebruik van fossiele brandstoffen. Het gaat om onder meer Nederland, België, Australië, Chili, Mexico, Jamaica en Denemarken.

"Deze top kan niet eindigen zonder een duidelijke, eerlijke en rechtvaardige 'routekaart' voor de afbouw van fossiele brandstoffen", zei milieuminister María Susana Muhamad González van Colombia op een persconferentie die het land samen met Nederland had georganiseerd. Dit was nadat de Braziliaanse voorzitter een concept van de slotverklaring had gedeeld. Hierin staat niets over het afbouwen van fossiele brandstoffen.

Het is een "simpele en wetenschappelijke waarheid" dat de wereld moet stoppen met het gebruik van fossiele brandstoffen, benadrukte de Colombiaanse minister. Ze noemde de namen op van landen die het voorstel steunen. De zaal gevuld met delegatieleden en activisten barstte los in luid applaus.

ABU DHABI (ANP/RTR) - Het conglomeraat International Holding Company (IHC) uit Abu Dhabi wil de buitenlandse bezittingen van het Russische oliebedrijf Lukoil overnemen. De Emirati hebben hun interesse ook al kenbaar gemaakt aan het Amerikaanse ministerie van Financiën.

IHC, dat onder leiding staat van een lid van de vorstelijke familie van Abu Dhabi, voegt zich bij een groeiende lijst van potentiële bieders, waaronder olieconcerns ExxonMobil en Chevron en investeerder Carlyle. Lukoil bezit onder andere raffinaderijen in Europa, deelnemingen in olievelden in verschillende landen en verspreid over de wereld veel tankstations, ook in Nederland.

De Verenigde Staten legden vorige maand sancties op aan de twee grootste Russische oliemaatschappijen, Rosneft en Lukoil, om Moskou onder druk te zetten de oorlog in Oekraïne te beëindigen. Sindsdien wil Lukoil af van zijn activiteiten over de grens. Eerder leek er al een deal te zijn met het Zwitserse oliebedrijf Gunvor, maar na kritiek uit Washington trok Gunvor zich terug.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - Het kabinetsplan om de NPO meer tijd te laten inruimen voor reclame, moet jaarlijks ongeveer 12 miljoen euro opleveren. De ministerraad is vrijdag akkoord gegaan met dit plan van demissionair minister Gouke Moes (Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap, BBB), waar media donderdag al over berichtten.

Volgens Moes kan de NPO hiermee een deel van de 150 miljoen euro aan bezuinigingen terugverdienen. De NPO mag vanaf 2027 10 procent van de tijd reclame uitzenden op televisie, waar dat nu nog 8 procent is.

Het plan komt voort uit onderhandelingen eind vorig jaar om onderwijsbezuinigingen te verzachten. In ruil daarvoor werd 50 miljoen euro extra uit het NPO-budget gehaald, met meer reclame-inkomsten als compensatie.

Moes erkent dat de maatregel de concurrentie met commerciële omroepen vergroot, die volledig afhankelijk zijn van reclame-inkomsten. Daarom blijft de reclamegrens voor onlinevideo's ongewijzigd, vertelde hij na afloop van de ministerraad.

BRUSSEL (ANP/AFP) - Brussel heeft Italië op de vingers getikt over Italiaanse regels waarmee het land voorwaarden kan stellen aan deals in de bankensector. De actie van de Europese Commissie volgt op strenge voorwaarden die de Italiaanse regering had gesteld aan de voorgenomen miljardenovername van de Italiaanse bank Banco BPM door rivaal UniCredit. Die deal ging uiteindelijk niet door.

De voorwaarden omvatten onder meer dat UniCredit volledig moest vertrekken uit Rusland. Ook moesten veel leningen in Zuid-Italië worden afgestoten. Dit alles ging UniCredit te ver, waarna de bank besloot zijn bod ter waarde van bijna 15 miljard euro in te trekken.

De Commissie is een zogenoemde inbreukprocedure gestart door een formele brief te sturen aan Italië, dat twee maanden de tijd heeft om te reageren. Volgens Brussel voldoet Italië niet aan Europese wetgeving en overlapt de Italiaanse wet met de exclusieve toezichthoudende bevoegdheden van de Europese Centrale Bank.

BERLIJN (ANP) - Europese leiders hebben in een telefoongesprek met de Oekraïense president Volodymyr Zelensky herhaald dat Europa Oekraïne voortdurend steunt op de weg naar een duurzame en rechtvaardige vrede.

Een woordvoerder van de Duitse regering zei dat bondskanselier Friedrich Merz, de Britse premier Keir Starmer en de Franse president Emmanuel Macron dit hebben beklemtoond in hun gesprek met Zelensky. De vier staatshoofden of regeringsleiders hebben gezegd de Amerikaanse inspanningen om de oorlog te stoppen te verwelkomen. Ze prijzen de Amerikaanse nadruk op de soevereiniteit van Oekraïne en de bereidheid het land veiligheidsgaranties te bieden.

De vier willen nauw samenwerken, ook met de VS en Europese partners.

Sacred Heart Cathedral, Bendigo, is an Australian cathedral. It is the Roman Catholic cathedral church of the Diocese of Sandhurst and seat of Bishop Shane Mackinlay. The cathedral is located in the provincial city of Bendigo, Victoria.

The cathedral was designed in the Gothic Revival style in 1895 by an architect of the firm Reed, Barnes and Tappin. It was listed on the Victorian Heritage Register on 4 September 1997.

Sacred Heart Cathedral is one of Australia's largest churches and the third tallest after St Patrick's Cathedral and St Paul's Cathedral in Melbourne. It is exceptionally large for a provincial city cathedral in Australia and its construction was made possible chiefly through the estate of Henry Backhaus (1811–1882), a German from Paderborn and the first Catholic priest on the Bendigo goldfields. Backhaus was very skilled in financial matters and accumulated considerable property - not least through encouraging his goldmining parishioners to contribute some of their finds to the work of the church. Backhaus left his wealth for the benefit of the church and enabled the cathedral, among other things, to be built.

In 1895, Martin Crane, an Augustinian and the first bishop of the diocese, called for competitive designs for a cathedral from several architects. The winning architect was William Tappin of the firm Reed, Barnes and Tappin, a firm established by Joseph Reed, one of Melbourne's most significant architects. It was built in the Gothic Revival style from sandstone quarried from the Geelong area.

The large pipe organ, built by Bishop & Son of London, was installed late in 1905.

After a long interval, work recommenced on the cathedral in 1954 and was completed in 1977. The later works were designed by Bates, Smart and McCutcheon, the successor of Reed, Barnes and Tappin. The spire was of lighter construction than that originally designed, being steel framed and clad with a masonry veneer.

Sacred Heart Cathedral is 75 metres (246 ft) long and has a ceiling height of 24 metres (79 ft). The main spire is 87 metres (285 ft) high.

Shurandy Sambo keerde vrijdagochtend terug bij Sparta, nadat hij zich met Curaçao heeft gekwalificeerd voor het WK voetbal. Na een aantal dagen feesten is het besef dat hij het op mag nemen tegen spelers als Kylian Mbappé en Nico Williams, langzaam ingedaald bij de jonge rechtsback.

Dat was even schrikken woensdag. Minister Gouke Moes noemde een bericht van GeenStijl over de portretten van ministers die werden door inclusieve kunst ONJUIST. Dat betekent: het klopt niet. Maar wat ons toen al opviel: Moes ging helemaal niet in op het hoofdpunt van ons bericht, namelijk dat er in het kader van een project tegen Discriminatie en Racisme kunst kwam te hangen in de ontvangsthal, en dat daarvoor de portretten van oud-bewindslieden uit de hal werden verwijderd. Bovendien was ons bericht uitgebreid ondersteund met screenshots van het intranet Moes' eigen ministerie. 

Maar wat blijkt nu? ""Er is geen ruimte meer voor de portretten in het nieuwe pand”, laat een woordvoerder van het ministerie weten aan De Telegraaf na berichtgeving van GeenStijl." De portretten worden dus wel degelijk vervangen, en de bewering van Moes dat die 'zichtbaar' bleven is niets meer dan een lelijk voorlichterstrucje waar zelfs (of: juist) Mark Rutte van zou zeggen nou jongens laten we dat maar niet doen. "In het oude pand blijven de portretten inderdaad ’zichtbaar’, maar dat blijkt na rondvraag slechts om een foto te gaan. Op die foto zijn de portretten weliswaar te bekijken, maar de fysieke portretten van 1918 tot en met 1959 verdwijnen in het depot."

Dat zijn dus twee hele rare dingen van minister Moes. Raar ding 1: hij laat dit soort dingen op zijn ministerie gebeuren. Raar ding 2: in plaats van dat hij er iets aan doet, beschuldigt hij de boodschapper (namelijk GeenStijl) van onjuiste berichtgeving. Hoe zou Hans Wijers/Eric Smit een bewindspersoon noemen die zoiets flikt? Een leugenaar misschien? Iemand zou moeten opzoeken welke minister er eigenlijk over mediabeleid gaat in dit land, zodat die Gouke Moes eens even flink op zijn donder kan geven. Wij zijn ondertussen met onze Woo-advocaat aan het bellen.
