Hackney, South Australia

Romilly House – more recently known as Hackney Lodge – is a landmark heritage building at the corner of Hackney Road and North Terrace in Adelaide. Erected in the late 1870s as an elegant Italianate structure, it has witnessed dramatic transformations in purpose and fortune over nearly 150 years. From its origins as a grand hotel and residence, through periods as offices, shops and social venues, it ultimately devolved into a low-budget boarding house. By 2017 the once-stately premises had decayed so badly that health authorities condemned it due to a severe cockroach infestation (7 News, 2017). The tale of Romilly House’s rise, decline, and hoped-for renewal reflects broader social and urban
changes in Adelaide’s history.

A new kind of Urban College in Adelaide’s CBD, Yugo Adelaide City, a Global Student Accommodation development, is an exemplary project that prioritises the life and learning of its students. The 35-storey tower provides accommodation for more than 700 students, with several communal spaces including a cinema, multi-media rooms, lounges, kitchens and social dining spaces. Positioned on North Terrace required the building to sit amongst varying architectural styles to seek a civic scale and presence to blend comfortably in the streetscape. Built using 700 load-bearing precast columns, Yugo Adelaide City is one of the tallest buildings of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and the advantages of its structure and prefabrication design approach means the entire interior of the tower can be reconfigured in the future for different use. The facade, produced using an innovative 3D printing technique, deflects sunlight off the tower’s exterior, reducing heat gain within the building.

An 1878 warehouse classical frontage at 201-205 North Terrace, Adelaide city, became a South Australian state heritage listed reminder of G.&R. Wills & Co. Ltd as a major softgoods (cloth and articles made from it) wholesaler from 19th Century South Australia that spread nationally. The company’s wholly-owned subsidiary George Wills & Co. was a shipping agent also based in Adelaide.

The company's origins were Richard Wills emigrating from Engand to South Australia aboard the Spartan in 1849, followed by his brother George in 1849 on the Minerva and bringing with some drapery. They set up shop and formed G.&R. Wills with premises at 40 and 41 Rundle Street, Adelaide city, in 1853. Two other brothers, Henry (also on the Minerva) and John, also emigrated but died soon after and were buried in West Terrace cemetery along with Richard, who died in 1862.

George Wills returned once to England to be married, and again, permanently, in 1859, to take charge of the company's purchasing house. The company grew into soft goods, stationery, fancy goods, warehousing and general importing with Adelaide managers.

G. & R. Wills and Co.’s Adelaide city headquarters occupied the block bounded by Rundle Street, Gawler Place, North Terrace and Fisher Place, with a clothing factory in Pulteney Street and a shoe factory in Pirie Street, becoming one of the largest softgoods businesses in South Australia. It later had branches at Broken Hill, Melbourne, Fremantle and Kalgoorlie.

The firm had moved into the North Terrace premises in 1867 and expanded through to Rundle Street. Between 1872 and 1881, the annual rateable value of the complex rose from £220 to £800.

In 1865, architects Wright Woods & Hamilton were engaged to supervise the erection of a store for G & R Wills at a cost of £2600 by the contractors English and Brown. By 1867, the cost of construction had risen to £3890, with dimensions given as 90 feet by 100 feet with a lofty cellar.

The complex was refaced and substantially extended to the design of Daniel Garlick and constructed by Brown and Thompson, opening in 1878. The facades were ashlar sandstone walling and cement dressings. Corinthian pilasters, quoins and parapets completed the building that incorporated Renaissance design with Italianate flourishes.

The facades were retained as the last vestiges of the G.&.R. Wills Adelaide city complex when they were bought, along with the smaller neo-Gothic styled building to the east (also state heritage listed in 1986), in the 1940s by John Martin & Co retail business.

SpaceX is scheduling another test flight of its monster Starship rocket later this week. Flight test 13 will carry 20 Starlink satellites and, hopefully, will not repeat the anomalies seen during the previous test. The mission is set to launch on Thursday, July 16, with a 90-minute launch window opening at 2245 UTC. It will carry next-generation Starlink V3 satellites for the first time, deploying them during the vehicle's sub-orbital lob. The plan is for the 20 satellites to extend their solar arrays and antennas, and connect with Starlink's constellation via high-capacity lasers. Six of the satellites will have a suite of cameras to take a look at Starship's heat shield and, according to SpaceX, some of the tiles on the vehicle have been painted white to simulate missing tiles and serve as targets during the test. Since the satellites will be on the same sub-orbital trajectory as Starship, they will burn up in the atmosphere approximately 20 minutes after deployment. The previous flight test in May was mostly a success. However, there were problems, notably with the Super Heavy Booster, which failed to perform a "soft" touchdown in the Gulf of Mexico. SpaceX provided more details on what happened to the booster. "Slight differences in engine startup on the ship caused the directional flip of the booster to be off by approximately 90 degrees," it stated. Then, after the flip, five of the 33 booster engines failed to relight, and the boostback burn ended early. The result was a mishap, which prompted the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to require an investigation before the Starship-Super Heavy could launch again. Starship also lost one of its three Raptor engines following stage separation, but still managed to reach its planned suborbital trajectory. SpaceX opted to not relight one of the Raptor engines during the suborbital flight, which is essential for showing that the vehicle can be trusted to enter orbit. The company intends to try again on Flight 13. "Several hardware and operational modifications have been made to address the interconnected causes with additional reliability improvements planned in upcoming versions of the Raptor engine," said SpaceX. It did not, however, elaborate on those "interconnected causes" nor what it had done to avoid a repeat of the booster flip incident. It only added: "The startup sequence has been modified to be more robust to timing variability and more reliably flip in the desired direction," and noted hardware modifications "to improve re-light reliability." Neither the booster nor Starship will be recovered on this flight. The booster is expected to make a controlled descent in the Gulf of Mexico, while Starship will again attempt a controlled re-entry and splashdown in the Indian Ocean, as on previous flights. An in-space reignition of one of Starship's Raptors is essential before SpaceX can send Starship to orbit, deploy Starlink satellites using the vehicle, or meet NASA's requirements forr the Artemis III and IV lunar landers. ®

Microsoft has begun sending its email of shame to Windows 10 consumers, reminding them that Extended Security Updates will run for an extra year. Strangely, some email clients are treating this latest emission as mere spam. Microsoft last month extended consumer ESU coverage through October 12, 2027. The company is now notifying those customers who might not have noticed the update on the support page that they've got another year to buy a new PC. The email talks about "our ongoing commitment to helping customers stay secure" while not mentioning Windows 11 or Copilot at all. Instead, it said: "We understand that moving to a new PC can take time." It also takes money. Windows 11's hardware requirements left millions of otherwise functional PCs ineligible for the upgrade amid soaring component prices, and the extension could further delay any Windows 10-driven PC replacement wave hardware vendors were hoping for. Consumers receiving the email have another year to see if hardware prices stabilize or Microsoft blinks again. After all, ESU for commercial purposes currently runs to 2028. Microsoft does not share official figures, but Statcounter shows that Windows 11 growth has mostly stalled in recent months. While Windows 11 accounts for about 70 percent of the Windows device market, there remains a substantial number of users sticking with Windows 10, many of whom will have received Microsoft's acknowledgement of the fact. For Windows 10 holdouts, the message amounts to this: keep the old PC for another year. Microsoft can try the upgrade pitch again in October 2027. ®

Of nog beter: "Het voortdurend ter discussie stellen van de wet is mede met het oog op de uitvoering ongewenst." En best: "Gemeenten vrezen dat dit (intrekking dwangwet, red.) zal leiden tot een toename van maatschappelijke onrust."

Maatschappelijke onrust! Zoals wanneer er rellen ontstaan vanwege de dwangwet, wanneer gemeenten in opstand komen tegen de dwangwet door de dwangwet, wanneer burgemeesters zich tegen de eigen coalitie verzetten want dwangwet, wanneer de dwangwet in actie een totale faal blijkt omdat het nu eenmaal gaat om: de dwangwet, wanneer er een heuse 'interventieladder van het interbestuurlijk toezicht' bij wordt gehaald om asieldwangwetweigeraars een pets op de billen te geven wegens de dwangwet, zoals niks helpt tegen de totale asielhel die ook naar uw achtertuintje komt omwille van de dwangwet en zoals wanneer er overal al jaren maatschappelijke onrust ontstaat met dank aan de dwangwet. Nee nee, maatschappelijke onrust moet te allen tijde worden voorkomen. Daarom hebben wij nog wel een adviesje voor de RvS: GA EENS KAPOT JOH.

Maar zowel de man achter de toonbank als zijn vrouw, die de kassa deed, wisten niet wat gabagool was, wat me ietwat van mijn stuk bracht. Die man vuurde allerlei vragen op me af, ik probeerde het antwoord te vinden via Google, maar mijn 5G-verbinding liet me weer eens in de steek. De man werd ongeduldig, hij én zijn vrouw begonnen heel opgewonden te praten en ook Hassnae, die qua uiterlijk én qua temperament makkelijk voor een Napolitaanse zou kunnen doorgaan, verloor haar geduld met me. ​Erik zet komende week een volgende stap in zijn medische carrière: hij start deze week het coschap ‘burn-out’ aan het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum. Het gloednieuwe coschap ‘Van overcompenseren tot overspannen’ dat recent is ontwikkeld moet de studenten klaarstomen voor de arbeidsmarkt.

‘’Met de druk op de zorg die al jaren toeneemt, is dit coschap eigenlijk niet meer weg te denken uit de arbeidsmarktvoorbereiding'', aldus de opleidingsdirecteur geneeskunde van het LUMC. Binnen het coschap lopen de studenten mee met overspannen artsen uit het werkveld en oefenen ze met vaardigheden die bestaan uit onderdelen zoals ‘van zinloosheid naar zingeving’ en ‘hoe blijf ik ongemotiveerd presteren'. Andere belangrijke competenties zijn jezelf medicatie voorschrijven en gecontroleerd over je grenzen gaan. ''Samen zorgen we ervoor dat toekomstige artsen tijdens een burn-out gewoon kunnen blijven werken om zo de al overbezette zorg te ontlasten.''

Erik zegt blij te zijn om te worden voorbereid op de onvermijdelijke burn-out die hem te wachten staat. ‘’Ik heb op de andere afdelingen waar ik heb meegelopen al zoveel over burn-outs gehoord. Goed dat dit eindelijk wordt genormaliseerd.’’ Hij is op dit moment druk met oefenen hoe je tijdens je burn-out zo effectief mogelijk je vrije dagen opneemt.

Volgend jaar starten ze met de pilot ‘Vechten voor je functie’.
