Democrats capitulate to MAGA media mogul. California Attorney General Rob Bonta (D) and 11 other states drop their lawsuit to block David Ellison's Paramount from acquiring Warner Bros. — and get little in return.
Extremely depressing news, so I've tried to include some pieces that emphasize the positive and re-commit to the fight. First, here's more coverage: The Ellisons Have Made This Movie Before In exchange for the plaintiffs (all Democratic attorneys general, sigh) removing one of the last remaining roadblocks to Paramount's $111 billion takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount signed on to commitments with no real enforcement behind them. Even modest concessions — like $5 million a year for independent film — sunset within five years. There are no divestitures. And some terms are just laughable, like granting the conglomerate's owners oversight of the editorial independence of CNN and CBS News (which is probably why two of the attorneys general openly objected to this term). But with Paramount, you don't need a catalog of failed consent decrees to understand what is to come. You only need the record of the family making the promises: David Ellison, CEO of Paramount, and his father, tech billionaire and Trump ally Larry Ellison. And here's Matt Stoller looking for positives in this bleak situation: Happy Oligarch Day as Trump-Aligned Billionaires Take Over Hollywood So what does this whole collapse mean? Well, I'm in a strangely good mood. This acquisition, while certain to damage Hollywood and the media, required immense amounts of political capital to get through. Consider what it took: An aggressive President, a right-wing Congress, a deeply morose California Democratic establishment, California Governor Gavin Newsom and NJ Governor Mikie Sherrill, LA Mayor Karen Bass, stars like Tom Cruise and James Cameron, major movie theater chains like AMC, Regal, and Cinemark, unions like IATSE and the Director's Guild, JP Morgan's CEO Jamie Dimon, much of Wall Street, every global antitrust enforcer, plus a highly dishonest and corrupt press all had to put their thumb on the scale to beat what was essentially a group of frustrated artists led by Mark Ruffalo, the Writer's Guild, some outraged antitrust lawyers, and a surly public. They had to lie, cheat, and steal. And they did. That is not strength, it is weakness. It is very different than earlier mergers, like Disney-Fox, that went through without any meaningful opposition. In this case, everyone saw the deal could have been blocked, a judge had already ruled multiple times that the case was reasonable, and Bonta just flip-flopped. When the Paramount-Warner deal turns out badly, and it probably will, everyone will know who to blame. Monopoly Round-Up: Paramount-WB Isn't Just a Loss, It's a Prelude We learned two important things in this battle. The first is what happens when an elected leader tries to say no to an oligarch after 45 years of unfettered rule by capital. That is, they get extremely angry and vicious. As G.K. Chesterton once said, "The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all." Ellison threatened the entire state of California with moving Paramount out of the state, his legal team said they'd destroy antitrust law by appealing to a Supreme Court whose members they know personally, his allies controlled most of the media narrative about the case, and he engaged in an extreme version of corruption vis-a-vis the President.... The second level is about the Democrats, which is a political party few people really understand. The most important thing to get about the older generation of Democrats is they are fundamentally uninterested in the real world. They have a form of politics, but it is unrelated to governing.... Now, I've been careful to say that it's an older generation of Democrats who cosplay as substantive. This cycle is going to see a bunch of new people elected. Last year is when New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani won, and he definitely is perceived to have a different approach. How different is an important question. Abdul El-Sayed, who is probably the most important figure, is quite smart. We interviewed him for Organized Money. Melat Kiros and Angie Nixon both prevailed on campaigns that promised to break up big medicine and take on corporate concentration. So did Aisha Wahab in California. In Arkansas, Hallie Shoffner is campaigning against corporate concentration of farming. There will be more of this. They may show a different form of politics, taking the side of the anti-Ellison coalition, as it were. The point, though, is that what we just saw is not just a battle we lost. It is a prelude of the kind of tactics and coalitions to come. Right now, it's clear that billionaires don't have to follow the law. It's also clear there is now a serious challenge to that framework. It wasn't quite powerful enough to block the merger. But now we know how they are going to play the game.

TikTok has agreed to pay Alabama at least $100 million and adopt new restrictions for teenage users, including a two-hour daily limit, overnight access restrictions, stronger age verification, a ban on beauty filters, and an option for a non-personalized feed. The settlement could grow to as much as $300 million if enough other state attorneys general join similar agreements. The Guardian reports: A trial had been set to begin on Monday in the southern US state over claims by Alabama that TikTok misled parents about tools meant to shield children from harmful content. [...] Attorney general Steve Marshall hailed Friday's settlement as "a great day for Alabama parents." He said: "Tonight, they can rest easier knowing real protections are in place to shield their children from the dangers of social media addiction."
Under the settlement, TikTok will send $100m to Alabama and could possibly pay up to $300m in total if 40 other attorneys general sign similar agreements with the company within a specified timeframe. In addition, the Alabama deal includes a conditional restriction that Meta also agreed to: expanding the night-time shutdown period to 10pm to 7am if other platforms also commit to do the same.

A married couple in their 70s have been arrested for allegedly shooting and killing their son-in-law, a New York Times engineer, in broad daylight at a suburban Bay Area park.
A police officer found Jonathan McKinsey, 40, lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds in a park in Dublin, California, a small city about 35 miles (56.3km) east of San Francisco. Around the time the officer discovered him, 911 calls began pouring in from witnesses reporting the shooting.

WASHINGTON (ANP/RTR) - De Amerikaanse president Donald Trump zegt dat hij niet openstaat voor het versoepelen van sancties tegen Iran. Nieuwssite Axios schreef maandag dat Trump Iran economisch zou willen ontzien in ruil voor "concrete stappen" van Iraanse kant met betrekking tot het nucleaire programma. Dat is "nepnieuws", aldus Trump op Truth Social.
"Ik heb ze NIETS aangeboden", schrijft Trump op zijn platform. Axios meldde het nieuws maandag op basis van Amerikaanse bronnen. Trump zegt op Truth Social dat de nieuwssite het verhaal in moet trekken.
De Amerikaanse president weigerde afgelopen weekend een Iraans voorstel voor een staakt-het-vuren, maar zei een dag later tegen Axios spoedig nieuwe onderhandelingen te verwachten. Trump verklaarde maandag tegen verslaggevers dat de VS de Iranoorlog "heel snel" zullen winnen, zoals hij recent vaker zei.
De Straat van Hormuz is effectief gesloten sinds februari, toen de oorlog in het Midden-Oosten begon met Amerikaanse en Israëlische aanvallen op Iran.
BRUSSEL (ANP) - Mark van Bommel heeft met België het doel om de Nations League te winnen. "Als je ergens aan meedoet, dan moet je ervoor gaan", zei de bondscoach van België na de nederlaag van de Rode Duivels in Brussel in de Nations League tegen het Frankrijk van bondscoach Zinédine Zidane (0-1).
Van Bommel zag België in de 88e minuut door een doelpunt van de Franse invaller Michael Olise voor de eerste keer onder zijn leiding verliezen. "Ik heb na afloop in de kleedkamer gezegd dat ik niemand iets kon verwijten", zei de 49-jarige trainer. "We hebben met de juiste intensiteit en beleving gespeeld. We zijn pas net begonnen met elkaar. We moeten deze lijn doortrekken."
Van Bommel speelt vrijdag met België thuis tegen Turkije. Daarna gaan de Belgen op maandag op bezoek bij Frankrijk. "We spelen nu in de Nations League, maar we richten ons vooral op het EK van 2028", zei Van Bommel. "Het draait in voetbal om details, hopelijk valt het de volgende keer weer onze kant op. Al zal het met name uit tegen Frankrijk nog moeilijker worden om ons eigen spel te spelen."
DEN HAAG (ANP) - Staatssecretaris Judith Tielen (Emancipatie, VVD) vindt het "schrikbarend" dat 15,8 procent van de Nederlanders het vindt te rechtvaardigen dat een man zijn vrouw slaat. Daarmee reageert de bewindsvrouw op een onderzoek naar vrouwenemancipatie door de universiteiten van Amsterdam en Tilburg. "Het laat zien dat we echt nog veel te doen hebben om geweld tegen vrouwen uit te bannen."
In 2012 vond 88 procent het nooit gerechtvaardigd dat een man zijn vrouw slaat, in 2022 ging het om 87 procent en nu dus om ruim 84 procent.
"Dit soort opvattingen draagt bij aan het ontstaan en voortduren van geweld tegen vrouwen", aldus Tielen die aangeeft er "grote zorgen" over te hebben. Het Rijk werkt samen met maatschappelijke initiatieven om geweld tegen vrouwen aan te pakken en Tielen benadrukt dat dit nodig blijft, "gezien de sterke tegenkrachten vanuit internationale conservatieve stromingen, waaronder de manosfeer".
"Door de dreigende achteruitgang van emancipatie en nieuwe ontwikkelingen die emancipatie beïnvloeden, heeft het fundament van emancipatie versterking nodig", stelt de bewindsvrouw. Zij laat onder meer onderzoek doen naar de impact en verspreiding van anti-gendernarratieven en hoe die zich verhouden tot de manosfeer en andere (religieus-)extreme bewegingen. Ook is er sinds 14 september een nationaal coördinator geweld tegen vrouwen en huiselijk geweld, Judith Kuypers.
Onlangs werd bekend dat Nederland op de wereldranglijst emancipatie zakte van plek 43 naar plek 46, daarvoor stond Nederland op de 28e plek. Kort na dat onderzoek kwam in een rapport van het Trimbos-instituut en de Universiteit Utrecht naar voren dat jongeren veel negatiever zijn gaan denken over homoseksualiteit. Zo constateerden de onderzoekers dat het percentage jongens op de middelbare school dat positief staat tegenover homoseksualiteit in de afgelopen vier jaar bijna is gehalveerd van 40 naar 22 procent.

This is a lovely find as Norfolius howensis is considered uncommon and a relatively rare lacewing.
While it is native to the eastern coast of this country, its populations are sparse.
It is a striking insect, identifiable by its bright pinkish-red wing spots (pterostigma) and the distinct dark red or black diamond-shaped markings on each segment of its abdomen.
Just the one species within genus Norfolius. Family Nymphidae.

Human contractors hired to improve Microsoft's Copilot AI chatbot are constantly bombarded with lewd or sexually explicit photo editing requests and images that users have uploaded, including upskirt photos or putting women into sexual positions. These contractors are then asked to review whether the generated image successfully fulfilled the prompt -- such as, did the image generator make the woman's AI-enlarged breasts big enough. [...]
"Faces are always uncensored, and many of the prompts are sexual in nature and dubiously consensual," one person who works on the prompts told 404 Media. [....]
These contractors are not being hired to flag or vet offensive or inappropriate content. They are being paid to review the quality of Copilot's output, including in these cases of sexual imagery.
