Why is Israel so afraid of the film NAZA? We spoke to its directors – Stateside with Kai and Carter

When NAZA premiered at Venice earlier this month, it sent shockwaves across the globe. Composed of interviews with 24 anonymous Israeli intelligence officers and soldiers, NAZA is a haunting exposé of the tools that the Israeli military uses to carry out the remote killing of Palestinians in Gaza – including AI, mass surveillance, and devastating airstrikes that kill civilians and raze homes. Now, the Israeli government is treating NAZA like a national security crisis. Benjamin Netanyahu is even pushing for legislation that could strip the film's two directors of their Israeli citizenship. Host Carter Sherman speaks with the directors of NAZA, Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, in one of their first interviews with an American journalist. The film, which was produced by the Guardian, will open in New York this week and soon expand to theaters worldwide. It will also stream, for free, on the Guardian website in November

Former snooker world champion Graeme Dott jailed for child sexual abuse

Dott, 49, receives seven-year sentence after abusing a boy and a girl in what judge says was ‘gross violation of trust’

The former snooker world champion Graeme Dott has been jailed for seven years at the high court in Edinburgh after being convicted of sexually abusing two children.

In August, Dott was found guilty of sexually abusing a boy and a girl after a five-day trial at Glasgow high court. The court heard that the 2006 world champion inappropriately touched and exposed himself to both children. He denied the charges but was convicted of two counts of lewd, indecent and libidinous behaviour by a majority verdict.

Fayed survivors say GMC let abuse continue by refusing to investigate doctors

Women say inquiry should look at medical regulator after it dismissed request to scrutinise medic accused of sharing results of intrusive sexual health examinations with tycoon

Victims of Mohamed Al Fayed have accused the medical regulator of allowing his sexual abuse to continue unchecked by refusing to investigate allegations that doctors were complicit in his crimes.

Survivors of Fayed’s abuse have called for the General Medical Council (GMC) to be investigated after it dismissed a request in 2017 to scrutinise a doctor accused of subjecting a woman to intrusive sexual health examinations and sharing the results with Fayed.

‘Online sex workers literally have to bare it all’: why Patricia Nilsson is exposing the world’s biggest porn bosses

As a business journalist, Nilsson began rigorously reporting on the power players of the adult industry, who prefer to remain in the shadows. Along the way, she uncovered how porn has shaped the internet – and our lives as a whole

There was a time, a few decades ago, when the men who owned the world’s biggest pornography businesses were happy to be famous. They paraded a lifestyle they hoped looked glamorous, appearing in public dressed in silk pyjamas or with a woman in swimwear on each arm. Porn moguls like Hustler’s Larry Flynt or Playboy’s Hugh Hefner were household names.

“Say what you want about these old perverts, who once set the tone of our sexual culture, but at least you knew who they were and what they were selling,” Patricia Nilsson writes in her new book, Guilty Pleasure: The Pornification of the Internet, the Economy, and Everything Else. “These days, the men calling the shots are nowhere to be seen.”

On the rocks? Scotch distilleries pause production as unsold ‘whisky loch’ grows

Demand for Scotland’s most famous export has slumped, with industry facing job cuts and closures

Obscured by the Scottish countryside on the outskirts of Kirkcaldy, Cluny bond is, in effect, a small town built to store whisky. By the time the latest set of warehouses are finished on the former opencast coal mine, Diageo’s 220-hectare (544-acre) maturation campus will be able to store almost 3m casks of Scotch. The drinks multinational needs the space.

After a 15-year boom turbocharged by the Covid-19 pandemic, demand for Scotch whisky has slumped around the world. Distilleries have paused production across Scotland to avoid adding to the glut of supply, known as a “whisky loch” – the equivalent of a “wine lake”.

Amnesty meldt oorlogsmisdaden Mali: tientallen burgers gedood

Microbes Could Survive On Saturn's Moon Enceladus

New research suggests Enceladus may be an especially promising place to search for extraterrestrial life: microbes similar to those found near Earth's hydrothermal vents survived in lab conditions designed to mimic the Saturnian moon's subsurface ocean. A separate study also found that material blasted from Enceladus' plumes may naturally separate and concentrate salts, organics and potential biosignatures into individual ice grains, potentially making them easier for future spacecraft to detect.

"That is great news in the search for life," Frank Postberg, lead author of one and co-author of the other of these new studies and professor at Freie Universitat Berlin, said in a statement. "Future spacecraft will have to analyze many individual ice particles in the plume. But if they come across one with microbial material in it, they could identify biosignatures in the particle relatively easy with already available technology." Space.com reports: Enceladus isn't the only place in our solar system with water -- so, why is it so exciting in the search for life? Well, it has to do with the seafloor of its extensive, liquid ocean. Down deep at the bottom of this body of water, scientists think hydrothermal processes, or movement or reactions with hot water under the surface, are taking place. The plumes shooting upward from the ocean also contain trace amounts of salts and organic compounds. NASA's Cassini spacecraft found these traces when it flew through the plumes over a decade ago. Between the hydrothermal activity and the organics and minerals in the water, this moon's ocean has a number of aspects that could be involved in supporting life.

What's more, using a combination of Cassini data, theoretical models and laboratory experimentation, in Postberg's new study the team found that the plume's water droplets blasting out into space at up to 621 miles per hour (1,000 kilometers per hour) don't freeze as quickly as expected. Before, scientists thought the freeze would happen instantaneously once the droplets reached space, but Postberg and fellow researchers say they found the freezing would actually happen much slower.

They also found that during this freezing process, the salt, organic compounds (and maybe possible signs of life) in the water droplets separate from one another. Not only that, but the team says that as the particles are blasted out into space, they should often collide with the icy cracks of the planet's surface. This ultimately would leave behind tiny shards of frozen droplets with individually separated out components. Essentially, it's like the planet has organized its oceanic ingredients into tiny, frozen particle fragments. This work is described in two new studies published in the journal Science Advances here and here.

Huh asielsinstroom afgelopen week weer 900!?!?

What eldritch horror lurks behind Heathrow's information screens?

Airport departure boards are supposed to tell passengers where and when their flights will leave. Recent examples spotted by eagle-eyed Reg readers have offered some bonus information: a Windows activation reminder, dates from the past, and a glimpse of what appears to be Windows 7 beneath the signage software. Airport borks, it seems, are like buses: three have arrived in quick succession at Heathrow. The first display shows a Windows activation watermark behind a list of departures to glamorous destinations. Milan? How lovely. Cairo? A place to ponder culture and millennia-old construction techniques. Activate Windows? OK, not quite so lovely. Perhaps the destination board had simply embarked on a journey of self-discovery. But at least the date was correct, right? Er, wrong. Time might be moving forward for the rest of the world, but at Heathrow it appears to be going backward. Perhaps heading to a time when air traffic control wasn't beset by problems and air travel didn't involve increasingly performative security protocols that differ country by country. Our second serving of signage silage shows one page dated September 21 and another stuck on September 12. A number switcheroo? A window into the past? Or simply a display that had stopped receiving updates? Alas, things became more unsettling a few days later when another Heathrow screen revealed the eldritch horror lurking beneath the departures display. Is that... Windows 7? The network dialog looks an awful lot like something from the operating system that refuses to die. The taskbar and Start button peeking out from the bottom of the screen only deepen the suspicion. Then again, Heathrow is no stranger to displaying retired technology. A British Airways Concorde remains parked at the airport, reminding passengers stuffed into yet another Boeing or Airbus that air travel was once considerably more ambitious – and perhaps a little more dangerous. When Concorde retired in 2003, Microsoft was two years into the Windows XP era. A different sort of danger, perhaps, but at least nobody had yet asked it to run an airport departures board in 2026. ®

Perhaps Britain's most hated thinker

And so we come to the celebrated moment, described many times and most vividly in Gentle Regrets, when looking down from the little flat on the Rue de Bérite, Scruton recoiled with all his mind and heart from the revolutionary spirit of 1968. Probing his friends' politics in the following days, he became convinced that whatever he believed, it was the opposite of that. "I came back to Cambridge," he once said, "determined to reanimate a political outlook for the modern world."
