‘A lot more to my game’: Gordon rises to a new level after Barcelona rebirth

Impressive against Spain, England’s best player against Czechia, the move to La Liga has transformed the winger

The way that Anthony Gordon sees it, he is still the same player, the same guy – on a journey, striving for self-improvement, a thinker, immensely driven. The way that an increasing number of people see him is changing, certainly in the UK. And, for that, it is impossible to overlook the Barcelona factor.

The winger had a positive World Cup for England, despite a slow start, culminating in the dream moment when he gave his team their 1-0 lead in the semi‑final against Argentina. It was the prelude to the nightmare when he was withdrawn as Thomas Tuchel switched to a back five. England were reeled in, beaten 2-1, left with eternal regrets.

Stella McCartney spotlights sea life at Paris fashion week as animal rights returns to headlines

Designer is developing wool alternatives and for Paris wants focus to be on ‘sea life, not sea food’ with ocean-inspired clothes

Stella McCartney has been talking about animal rights at fashion week for 30 years. She is usually a lone voice, but the issue is back in the headlines this season. Outcry over the physical restraining of a Peta protester at a catwalk show by Steven Kolb, the president of New York fashion week’s governing body, has put cruelty in wool production – previously considered a niche issue compared with the hot button topic of fur – on the news agenda.

“There is no wool on the runway this season, and I’m proud of that,” McCartney said after her show. McCartney has been working on wool alternatives, including Brewed Protein, a fermented alternative to cashmere and wool developed in collaboration with the Japanese biotech firm Spiber, which was first used in her collections a year ago.

‘Whoever is hearing me, we need help’: how flight 1073 survived its 17,000ft plunge

On morning service from Dubai to Tel Aviv, 150 passengers witnessed a horrific cockpit assault and a daring rescue

As flight FZ 1073 soared west over the waters of the Gulf towards Israel, its passengers may have bemoaned a 20-minute delay at takeoff. For a low-cost airline route, flydubai’s daily service to Tel Aviv is usually convenient and reliable. The nonstop flight takes about three and a half hours and departs early enough from Dubai that it usually lands at Ben Gurion airport at about 9am local time.

That was not the case for Wednesday’s catastrophic flight. The passenger jet never made it to its scheduled destination. Instead, it dropped thousands of feet in seconds before limping down to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia – perhaps miraculously, since photos suggested a large part of the tail of the aircraft was missing.

The Guardian view on Lula v the Bolsonaros: the decision of Brazilian voters will affect us all | Editorial

Sunday’s general election is too close to call, with the incumbent president facing the son of the man who attempted a coup against him

Sunday’s election in Brazil could hardly be a clearer-cut choice – nor a closer call. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, known as Lula, is neck and neck in the polls with Flávio Bolsonaro, the son and champion of the jailed far-right former president Jair. Mr Bolsonaro senior is serving a 27-year sentence for plotting a coup to “annihilate” democracy after losing the last election.

Brazil is Latin America’s largest democracy, but military dictatorship is in its recent past. Mr Bolsonaro wants to free his father and those who rioted in his support in 2023. The senator has campaigned as a less crass and temperamental version of his father, but he is no less extreme. For many on both sides, this is a vote against a man they detest more than an endorsement of their own candidate. Most voters disapprove of both men.

Dutch Police Arrest 'Reformed' Hacker In Shiny Hunters Investigation

An anonymous reader quotes a report from KrebsOnSecurity: Authorities in the Netherlands have arrested a 24-year-old convicted cybercriminal on suspicion of aiding in data thefts and extortions by the prolific hacker group ShinyHunters. In the days immediately following the suspect's arrest, remaining ShinyHunters members dramatically escalated their attacks, stealing highly sensitive data from the FBI and extorting the Russian ransomware group Cl0p. According to three sources familiar with the matter, the Dutch man arrested by authorities this month is Pepijn van der Stap, a convicted cybercriminal from Almere and Lelystad in the Netherlands. Van der Stap was previously convicted in 2023 in connection with a string of data thefts and extortions that prosecutors said earned between 1.5 million euros and 2.7 million euros.

At his trial in late 2023, van der Stap admitted that he lived a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde existence, secretly using the hacker handle "Umbreon" to extort victims and post their data on English language hacking communities like the now-defunct RaidForums and Breached. By day, however, van der Stap was working as a software engineer at the Amsterdam-based cybersecurity startup Hadrian, while volunteering at the Dutch Institute for Vulnerability Disclosure (DIVD), a nonprofit security research group. Van der Stap confessed to his data theft and extortion activity, and was sentenced to four years in prison (one of which was suspended). Van der Stap had publicly presented himself as a "reformed hacker" after serving prison time for data theft and extortion. In a Sept. 9 interview, KrebsOnSecurity said he claimed he was trying "to turn his life around and make a positive contribution to society," while working in offensive security and attempting to make amends to former victims.

Canonical begins pushing Resolute Raccoon

Resolute Raccoon is ready to roll out to existing Ubuntu users. Canonical has flipped the switch, and users on 24.04 will start to get offered 26.04.1. Canonical has marked the occasion with an official announcement that it's time to upgrade your desktop. Normally, a given LTS release of Ubuntu starts nagging offering the upgrade to the new release when the following LTS version gets its first point-release. This time around, there has been a substantial delay: Ubuntu 26.04.1 appeared over a month ago. The company announced a small delay in a post ubuntu-announce mailing list when 26.04.1 first appeared, saying: “Users of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS will be offered an automatic upgrade to 26.04.1 LTS via Update Manager a couple of weeks following this release after some planned backports to address regressions in a recent version of rust-coreutils.” The delay is the fault of Rust language which is aiming to replace C, as promoted by evangelistic developers whom Linux grandees castigate until they go away. This is the same Rust uutils bundle that David Uhden Collado recently ported to OpenBSD, but which was swiftly rejected by determined defender of the C faith Theo de Raadt. (Please read the previous two paragraphs in the most sarcastic tone that you can muster.) If you want to upgrade your Ubuntu box, there are two potential methods – one command-line-based, and one using the GUI – but both are easier than the traditional Debian method. First, though, install any and all outstanding updates. For this, we entering the following the shell command, if only because it’s easier to copy-and-paste: sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade -y ; sudo snap refresh Because Canonical uses phased updates, you may see that some updates are “held back”. If you do, you can just run the main command again to get them: sudo apt full-upgrade -y Second time around, it may install a few more. Then reboot, and with any luck you will get offered the Resolute Raccoon upgrade. If you have Ubuntu installed on a relatively small partition, it may be as well to clear the APT package manager’s cache before you start. This can free up a lot of room. On our test VM, where we do this regularly, we got 1 GB back: liam-proven@noble-vbox:~$ df -h / Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda2 24G 18G 4.3G 81% / liam-proven@noble-vbox:~$ sudo apt clean liam-proven@noble-vbox:~$ df -h / Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda2 24G 17G 5.9G 74% / We reckon a free gigabyte for one command is pretty good. If you don’t get offered the upgrade automatically, run the “Software Updater” tool. If you don’t see it in your preferred app launcher, you can run the update-manager command in a shell. If you have any outstanding updates to your current version, you will be offered them first. Once they are all done, you should see a message saying: “The software on this computer is up-to-date. “However, Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS is now available (you have 24.04).” Alternatively, if you prefer to do these things from the shell: liam-proven@noble-vbox:~$ do-release-upgrade Checking for a new Ubuntu release = Welcome to Ubuntu 26.04 LTS 'Resolute Raccoon' = The Ubuntu team is proud to announce Ubuntu 26.04 LTS 'Resolute Raccoon'. We’ve cut this to the first few lines – there are some 60 lines of it in full. As we reported when it came out, there are worthwhile novelties in RR. For instance, in our testing on some machines with older Nvidia GPUs which did not work well with 24.04, the now Wayland-only GNOME 50 drove our geriatric video cards just fine. If you use any other desktop, from Cinnamon to Unity, you still get X11. ®
