Yemen and football in the face of civil war: ‘It would be very nice to give the world a different headline’

Coach Noureddine Ould Ali is staying positive despite a difficult situation at home and tough opponents at the Gulf Cup

The Yemen national coach, Noureddine Ould Ali, chose not to reach for a good old-fashioned football excuse after his team’s 1-0 loss to Qatar in the Gulf Cup on Saturday, despite a clear penalty not given their way. The defeat meant the Reds crashed out of the eight-team regional tournament, taking place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, with a game of the group stage remaining.

There are other factors the Algerian could list for a defeat against a team that was at the World Cup. Qatar have the Aspire Academy, state of the art stadiums and a former Spain and Real Madrid coach – Julen Lopetegui – in charge. Yemen have nothing approaching that and have not played a home game since 2012, a 2-1 win over Palestine in Sanaa.

British Sikh activist released from Delhi jail after nine-year detention

Indian government issued with warning it would be in contempt of court if it failed to release Jagtar Singh Johal

The British Sikh activist Jagtar Singh Johal has been released from a Delhi prison after the Indian high court warned the government it would be found in contempt of court if it continued to attempt to keep him in jail despite an 18 September court order releasing him on bail. Johal has been incarcerated for nine years without any full trial.

The court order was issued after Johal’s lawyers issued a writ of habeas corpus alleging he was being detained against the express direction of the court.

Gears of War: E-Day review – an alien invasion shouldn’t be this boring

Xbox, PC (version tested); The Coalition/Xbox Game Studios
E-Day boasts the best combat in 20 years of Gears games – but everything surrounding it is disappointing

Every Gears of War game released in the last 20 years has made reverent reference to Emergence Day, when alien creatures emerged from the earth, single-minded in their savagery. In E-Day, you’re there to witness it: the police lights, flipped cars, ground tremors, civilians running, aliens pouring out of fissures in the earth and ripping faces off. You’re at ground zero in a squad of four soldiers called Gears – Marcus Fenix, the leader; Dom, who wants to retire; Lucas, a green cadet with a buzzcut; and the dishonourably discharged Mags. Only this dysfunctional quartet can turn the tide. With guns. Lots of ’em.

Instead of answering questions raised by the ending of 2019’s Gears 5, we’re back to the start to find out why Marcus has a scar on his lip and why these soldiers started strapping chainsaws on to their assault rifles. Anything that was left to the imagination is here, for you to point at and say: “I understood that reference. This is a thing that I have seen.”

Burnham is right that ‘hope comes from honesty’. That’s why Labour must make the case for rejoining the EU | Sadiq Khan

Brexit was a disastrous act of national self-harm. Britain needs EU membership to bring growth and security in an increasingly volatile world

Hope again. That was the prime minister’s message to the country this week. A national social care system, greater public control of water and energy, help for first-time buyers and a crackdown on rogue landlords and empty homes. With clarity and conviction, Andy Burnham set out a bold plan to put Britain on a new path, steeped in Labour values.

It felt like a conference speech that would be remembered for years to come, marking a decisive break with a broken political model that has let British people down for decades. And perhaps most encouraging of all was the prime minister’s promise to rethink Britain’s relationship with the EU.

Is Trump to blame for Americans getting explosive diarrhea? | Arwa Mahdawi

As the midterms approach, Americans’ digestive health has become a bizarre talking point

Donald Trump seems to spend an unusual amount of time thinking about toilets.

Back in 2019, he bizarrely claimed: “People are flushing toilets 10 times, 15 times as opposed to once.” He repeated this claim at a Michigan rally the following year. “Ten times, right, 10 times,” Trump complained. “Not me, of course not me, but you,” he added while pointing at an unfortunate audience member.

From breakfast pancakes to dinner sides and pudding: Alissa Timoshkina’s apple recipes

Fried in pancakes, braised with duck, pickled with a roast chicken or baked for pudding, apples are one of autumn’s star ingredients

Few ingredients are as familiar as apples, yet few carry such symbolic weight. Peaking just as the season’s begin to turn, they are the ultimate symbol of nature’s abundance, imbued with a sense of nostalgia for the retreating sunlight. The symbolism became unexpectedly tangible to me during a recent autumn apple-picking trip with my family: surrounded by branches heavy with fruit, I found myself seeing the humble apple with fresh awe. It looked nothing short of nature’s miracle. Native to the mountains of central Asia, near the modern Kazakhstan-China border, it has travelled further than perhaps any other fruit, becoming at home in cuisines from Normandy to New York, Caucasus to Kashmir. Sweet or savoury, everyday or celebratory, the apple is truly universal. Its versatility always reminds me of the simple joy of cooking with the seasons.

Replica VOC-schip Batavia is vanuit Amsterdam terug in Lelystad

- kregen sterkere spieren;

- hadden een lagere bloeddruk;

- kregen een kleinere tailleomvang;

- konden harder sporten;

- liepen sneller.

'Power of 3'

Vervolgonderzoek niet even positief

Netanyahu: aanvaller flydubai-vlucht is Omaanse islamist

Cops Can Bypass iPhone’s Automatic Reboot to Get Into Locked Phones, Leaked Video Claims

Cops Can Bypass iPhone’s Automatic Reboot to Get Into Locked Phones, Leaked Video Claims

A company that makes phone hacking devices claims to have developed a solution that freezes iPhones in a state that lets cops more easily access sensitive data inside them, according to a video obtained by 404 Media.

This is the latest salvo in the never-ending battle between Apple and companies that help cops — sometimes those in authoritarian countries — break into iPhones.

In November 2024, 404 Media revealed Apple quietly introduced a new feature in iOS that automatically reboots an iPhone that has not been unlocked for 72 hours. The idea behind this so-called “inactivity reboot” is to revert the phone to a state that makes it harder for police to break into the device, and thus extract sensitive data from it with forensics technology.

At the time of Apple’s change, law enforcement agents expressed concern about this new feature, given that oftentimes they can’t immediately try to break into iPhones that have been seized. That could be because police are still waiting for a court authorization to do so, or there is simply a backlog of devices to unlock, for example.

The new technology to get around inactivity reboot was developed by Magnet Forensics, the company behind GrayKey, a popular tool sold to law enforcement agencies that allows them to unlock and access data stored in iPhones and Android smartphones. Magnet has developed a new device called GrayKey Preserve and a feature for its regular GrayKey devices called Evidence Preservation Mode, according to the video.

“This is an absolute game changer for iOS forensics and a function that I wish we had years ago,” a Magnet employee says in the leaked video, specifically mentioning that the solution is targeted at the iPhone’s inactivity reboot feature and the data it makes unavailable. GrayKey Preserve and Evidence Preservation Mode are also designed to combat another iPhone feature that automatically deletes certain data — such as cached locations, and recently deleted photos and iMessages — after a certain number of days. “We're gonna be able to preserve that data for an infinite amount of time.”

The educational and tutorial video, which was made exclusively for law enforcement agents and appears to be dated early 2025, does not explain the technical details behind this new product and feature, but gives some strong hints as to how it works. 404 Media granted the person who provided it anonymity because they were not authorized to share it with third parties.

“Now, one of the many things that the GrayKey Preserve is going to do, as part of all of this, inside of our initial access, is it's going to enable Airplane Mode, or more specifically, it's gonna disable our radio transmissions like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and cellular. In doing this, that's not only going to allow you to preserve the data in the field, but also isolate the data in the field,” the employee explains. “Even if that device doesn't have the ability to turn on Airplane Mode or to turn off the transmitters through the Control Center of iOS. Once initial access is gained and the device is in a preserved state, we also disable all of those radios to make sure that that data cannot reach that device.”

The idea behind GrayKey Preserve and Evidence Preservation Mode is to keep the iPhone in a state known as After First Unlock, or AFU. Having an iPhone in that state essentially allows cops to access data that would otherwise be much harder to obtain if the phone was in a Before First Unlock, or BFU state. If the iPhone is in BFU, certain sensitive data is encrypted, and it can be significantly harder — sometimes even virtually impossible — to brute-force the device’s passcode and unlock it. 404 Media previously obtained lists of iPhones that GrayKey and competitor Cellebrite could access, with variations between phones in an AFU and BFU state.

“That AFU state is captured,” by GrayKey Preserve and Evidence Preservation Mode, the employee says. “Even if that device does reboot for any number of reasons, memory maintenance or the power is lost or whatever, the AFU state is not lost. This is the true magic behind the GrayKey Preserve and the Evidence Preservation Mode function.”

When using this new solution, law enforcement agents only see the iPhone’s software version and device model, rather than any data within, according to the employee and a screenshot of GrayKey’s customer interface included in the video. That allows the cops to preserve the data they care about without actually seeing it before they are authorized to do so.

Apple and Magnet did not respond to a request for comment.

404 Media shared a transcript of the video with Jiska Classen, a researcher at the Hasso Plattner Institute who studies iPhone security. While Classen said that it’s impossible to know for sure how Magnet’s new feature works based on the video, she posited some theories and agreed that it is “quite a game changer” or “at least puts things back to where they were before inactivity reboot.”

She thinks Magnet has found a way to manipulate the iPhone’s clock, effectively “slowing down time” or even “stopping the clock from ticking, even after a reboot.” Most likely, according to her, the GrayKey may disable the iPhone tasks that set data to expire.

What is certain is that the ball is now in Apple’s court to figure out how Magnet got around inactivity reboot, and find a way to prevent the company and its technology from freezing iPhones — and the sensitive data stored in them — in time.
