A volte è il nome a evocare l’immagine. “Cafe Godzilla” non ha bisogno di spiegazioni: è un urlo visivo, un richiamo pop incastonato in una facciata quasi silenziosa. Ma c’è di più. In pochi metri si incontrano tre temperature di luce distinte — il buio profondo a destra, la freddezza metallica al centro, e la calda intimità a sinistra. Non disturbano, non si rubano spazio: convivono in equilibrio. Eppure, quel che altrove sembrerebbe solo un papocchio, qui è una firma. Un’estetica senza compromessi, istintiva e tutta giapponese.

IMOLA (ANP) - Geen van beide Ferrari's staat op zondag bij de eerste tien aan de start van de Grote Prijs van Emilia-Romagna. Charles Leclerc en Lewis Hamilton wisten zich niet te plaatsen voor het derde deel van de kwalificatie. Daarmee is Ferrari de grote verliezer van de zaterdag in Imola.

Het was opnieuw een grote tegenvaller voor de fans van Ferrari. De hoop van het Italiaanse legioen werd dit seizoen met de komst van Lewis Hamilton weer leven in geblazen. Hamilton won de sprintrace in China, maar verder wist de zevenvoudig wereldkampioen de verwachtingen niet waar te maken. Ook niet voor de roodgekleurde tribunes in Imola.

Bij zijn debuut voor eigen publiek op Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari kwam Hamilton niet eens door het tweede deel van de kwalificatie. Dat gold ook voor Leclerc. Het is hoogst onwaarschijnlijk dat één van de Ferrari's op zondag in de buurt van het podium komt. Ook de Italiaan Kimi Antonelli van Mercedes kwalificeerde zich niet bij de eerste tien.

WASHINGTON (ANP) - Donald Trump spreekt maandag met de Russische president Vladimir Poetin over de oorlog in Oekraïne, schrijft de Amerikaanse president op Truth Social. Vervolgens praat Trump met Volodymyr Zelensky. Samen met de Oekraïense president spreekt hij daarna nog met verschillende NAVO-leden.

MADRID (ANP/DPA) - Tijdens een vlucht van de Duitse luchtvaartmaatschappij Lufthansa is de copiloot flauwgevallen terwijl de gezagvoerder naar het toilet was. Het vliegtuig met 199 passagiers, op weg van Frankfurt naar Sevilla, vloog ongeveer tien minuten zonder een controlerende piloot.

Het ernstige incident van 17 februari vorig jaar wordt gemeld door een Spaanse onderzoeksinstantie. Lufthansa zegt op de hoogte te zijn van het rapport. De afdeling vliegveiligheid van Lufthansa voerde zelf ook een onderzoek uit maar maakt de resultaten niet bekend.

Hoewel de bewusteloze copiloot blijkbaar onbedoeld de besturing bediende, kon het vliegtuig stabiel blijven vliegen dankzij de automatische piloot. Het lukte de gezagvoerder uiteindelijk de beveiligde deur naar de cockpit te openen met een noodcode. Hij had de training daarvoor pas een maand eerder gevolgd. Hij had de normale code, die een zoemer activeert zodat de medepiloot de deur kan openen, vijf keer tevergeefs ingevoerd.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - De samenwerkende regionale moskeekoepels, de K9, roept de regering op zich "ondubbelzinnig uit te spreken tegen het onrecht dat de Palestijnse bevolking wordt aangedaan door de Israëlische overheid". "Trek nu een rode lijn", aldus de organisatie in een verklaring.

Volgens de koepel leiden onder meer de houding van politieke partijen en het uitblijven van "duidelijke veroordelingen" tot "groeiende pijn en frustratie" onder de Nederlandse bevolking, bij zowel moslims als niet-moslims. Ook tast dit het vertrouwen in de rechtsstaat aan, stelt de K9.

"Het structureel schenden van het humanitair recht en het doden van tienduizenden burgers door de Israëlische overheid - waaronder een zeer groot aantal kinderen - kan niet langer met stilte of vage formuleringen worden beantwoord", vindt de organisatie.

De K9 vertegenwoordigt naar eigen zeggen meer dan 250 moskeeën en islamitische organisaties.

It's been five years (to the day!) since Wired killed off "Beyond the Beyond," Bruce Sterling's excellent blog, a wanton act of online vandalism that, among other things, made it much harder to figure out what was on Bruce's mind, a subject I find endlessly fascinating:

This week, he posted a long, thoughtful, and seriously intriguing review of Cafe Europa Revisited, Slavenka Drakulic's followup to her 1996 international blockbuster Cafe Europa:

I confess that I had never heard of Drakulic, though, as I read Sterling's review, it became clear why he dotes on the acerbic Croatian essayist, a keen observer of the material world and theorizer of political upheaval:

Drakulic is well-known for an essay collection called "How We Survived Communism and Even Laughed," and the subtitle of this volume is "How to Survive Post-Communism," which just about says it all. Sterling characterizes it as the start of a new hot genre, "Old books directly written for old people by old people."

"The West" (whatever that is) is getting old. For more than a decade, Bruce Sterling's been predicting a future of "old people, in big cities, afraid of the sky." Original Sin, a new heavily reported book on the 2024 election makes a good case that Biden was indeed in a state of advanced senescence through much of his presidency and the entire election campaign, and had no business occupying the White House, much less running for another four years:

Also running: David Scott (79) who had to step down as ranking House Ag Committee member over health concerns. And: Dwight Evans (70), who missed most of last year's votes after suffering a stroke.

Meanwhile, young people might just be getting something out of the regulatory apparatus. Thanks to a smashing court loss in the USA and regulation in the EU, Apple is now required to allow app makers to use their own payment processors, skipping the 30% App Tax Apple levies on every in-app purchase, to the tune of $100b/year.

Among other things, this means that every Fortnite skin and upgrade could suddenly get 25% cheaper without costing Epic Games a dime. The only problem is that Apple refuses to obey the regulation or the court order:

The rest of the world doesn't seem scared – or at least, they're more scared of the risk of trusting US cloud technology that can be cut off to kneecap a rival economy, or used to spy on government and industry, or both. Als wij vroeger een keer wilden weten hoe het zat met de politiek enzo gingen we altijd kijken op de website van Gerard Joling, maar sinds hij een contract heeft bij RTL mag hij niet meer zo vaak uitleggen hoe de vork in de feitelijke steel zit. Tot: gisteravond. Aan tafel bij Vandaag Inside gaf de Duiders des Vaderlands zijn ongezouten mening over onder meer de demonstraties van Extinction Rebellion, en daar zat geen woord Spaans bij. Nou ja, geen woord Spaans, dat ook weer niet, er zaten twee woorden Spaans bij, namelijk 'Guardia' en 'Civil', oftewel Guardia Civil, wat zoveel wil zeggen als 'burgelijke garde', en dan met name dus de Spaanse uitvoering daarvan, internationaal vermaard, die volgens drs. Joling bepaalde mensen die op bepaalde snelwegen gaan zitten eens even flink kort danwel klein zouden moeten slaan. Ook een mening natuurlijk. Goed nieuws voor Ingrid Coenradie en andere praktisch ingestelde politici die best harde maatregelen willen nemen maar nog op zoek zijn naar financiële dekking (haha, Joling, dekking, red.): Geer wil ze uit eigen zak betalen. Klinkt behoorlijk rechts-populistisch allemaal, dus dat zal wel weer niet mogen van ons rechts-populistische kabinet.

A volte è il nome a evocare l’immagine. “Cafe Godzilla” non ha bisogno di spiegazioni: è un urlo visivo, un richiamo pop incastonato in una facciata quasi silenziosa. Ma c’è di più. In pochi metri si incontrano tre temperature di luce distinte — il buio profondo a destra, la freddezza metallica al centro, e la calda intimità a sinistra. Non disturbano, non si rubano spazio: convivono in equilibrio. Eppure, quel che altrove sembrerebbe solo un papocchio, qui è una firma. Un’estetica senza compromessi, istintiva e tutta giapponese.
