LIVE.

Alleen Koning Willem I was van beslissend belang.

The Metropolitan Police has stopped using digital forensics software from Oxygen Forensics while it investigates US allegations that the supposedly American outfit was secretly owned by Russians and developing its wares in Moscow. Scotland Yard confirmed it has paused use of the company's tools and launched a "full review," after US prosecutors last week accused Oxygen CEO Lee Reiber and Russian national Oleg Sergeyevich Davydov of concealing the company's ownership and where its software was actually being built. The Met signed a three-year deal with Oxygen in December 2023. Digital forensics teams use its software to extract and analyze data from phones and other devices seized during investigations. "We have paused our use of the tool while we carry out a full review," a Met spokesperson told The Times. "At this time, we believe any impact to ongoing investigations will be extremely limited. The Met does not share any data obtained from investigations with Oxygen Forensics Inc." The force said Oxygen's software runs on a closed IT system that isn't connected to the internet and was used in less than 0.2 percent of the more than 23,000 actions carried out by its digital forensics team over the past year. The pause comes after the US Department of Justice alleged that Oxygen, which is based in Alexandria, Virginia, presented itself to US government customers as an independent American company despite being owned and controlled by five Russian nationals through a Cyprus-based holding company. Prosecutors claim the same five Russians also owned Moscow-based MKO Systems, previously known as Oxygen Software, where developers actually wrote Oxygen's software. MKO, meanwhile, sold the technology in Russia under different product names to customers reportedly including the Federal Security Service, better known as the FSB, as well as the Russian Investigative Committee and Ministry of Internal Affairs. Oxygen's US customers weren't exactly small fry. US defense and homeland security agencies bought its software, including Homeland Security Investigations, the DHS Office of Inspector General, and the Secret Service's National Computer Forensics Institute. The DoJ isn't alleging that Oxygen's software contained malicious code or was used to gain unauthorized access to customer systems or data. Davydov, 52, was arrested at London's Heathrow Airport last month while preparing to fly to Turkey and appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday as the US seeks his extradition. District Judge Anthony Calloway declined to grant bail, according to The Times, citing Davydov's Russian citizenship and residence and the risk that he could flee. A clerk at Westminster Magistrates' Court told The Register that Davydov, was refused bail because it "hadn’t had enough time to gather important information." The fallout isn't limited to Scotland Yard. The National Police Chiefs' Council said other UK forces also use Oxygen products and have been encouraged to carry out their own assessments. "We are aware of the allegations made by US authorities regarding Oxygen Forensics," an NPCC spokesperson said. "These remain allegations at this stage and we note that US authorities have stated they are not alleging the software contained malicious code or that customer data was accessed without authorisation." "Forces that use Oxygen products have also been encouraged to undertake proportionate local assessments and activity to understand and contain any issues that are identified," the spokesperson added. The allegations are causing headaches elsewhere in Europe too. Romanian authorities have begun terminating their use of Oxygen products, while Latvia's State Police has suspended the software pending an assessment. The Register contacted The Met, NPCC and Oxygen Forensics for comment. ®

Vattenfall ziet juist ontspanning

Vierde tijd Verstappen in tweede vrije training GP in Maleisië

UK is not facing diesel shortage despite fears of Trump export ban, minister says

In effort to avoid panic at pumps, Keir Mather insists supply of fuel to Britain is ‘inherently resilient’

The government has moved to avert panic at the pumps, insisting that the UK is not facing a diesel shortage after Donald Trump threatened to cut off US supplies of the fuel.

The transport minister Keir Mather said on Friday that the UK has a wide range of sources of the fuel and is in talks with other European countries over the potential release of emergency diesel stockpiles.

The ICE documentary as chilling as a horror movie: ‘We’re trying to put the audience in a position of terror’

Film-makers Laura Poitras and Rachel Lauren Mueller’s new short is an unvarnished portrait of ICE-occupied Minneapolis

Get Out. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The Purge. All three films build on an august tradition of using horror as a Trojan horse to comment on the social, political and racial anxieties of their day. They’re Here, a new documentary featured in this year’s New York film festival, flips the script. Directed by Rachel Lauren Mueller, a journalist, and Laura Poitras, Academy award-winner, the 24-minute film employs horror tropes to re-examine the surge of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) offiers in Minneapolis last winter. “For filmmakers and journalists, there’s a great sense of responsibility in these moments when they arise,” said Mueller, a Minneapolis resident. “This is my neighborhood. It was my community. It was very clear to me what my role in this moment would be.”

Framed as a dystopian story set in an urban tundra, They’re Here follows the Trump administration’s border control campaign in Minnesota – officially dubbed Operation Metro Surge. Over the course of three winter months, the Department of Homeland Security moved to remove the Twin Cities’ Somali immigrant population and destabilize its progressive political order. The documentary takes in the wanton shock-and-awe campaign and scales it down to the battlefield, following Minneapolis residents as they evade and resist ICE and customs and border patrol agents – obscuring the residents’ identities for protection.

For too long, only the right has expanded the boundaries of what governments can do. Can Burnham change that? | Andy Beckett

The PM might come across as a nice bloke but he is politically ruthless. He will need to be if he is to turn big talk into big changes

How much can a Labour government change the country? According to many voters, journalists and politicians, including plenty in the party itself, the answer to that stubbornly recurring question has always been: not that much. Labour governments can’t restructure the economy, radically redistribute wealth, truly empower the disadvantaged or adopt a genuinely ethical foreign policy without upsetting too many powerful interests, from the British rich to the US government to global financial markets.

This endlessly repeated conventional wisdom – internalised by some on the left as well as centrists and the right – has haunted many Labour governments, from the first, tentative ones in the 1920s to Keir Starmer’s diligent but failed administration a century later. Yet conventional wisdom can be wrong, especially in volatile periods such as the current one, when precedent may count for little.

Christa Pike survived her execution attempt. Tennessee must not try again | Austin Sarat

What happened to Pike was gruesome. No one deserves what she went through, not even those who commit horrible crimes

Botched executions are nothing new in US history. In the era when hangings were common, some condemned people were decapitated. Later, when the electric chair was in vogue, every now and again, someone would catch fire during an electrocution. And nitrogen hypoxia, the US’s newest execution method, has already proven notoriously unreliable.

But, of all of the ways we have tried to execute people, lethal injection has the worst track record. More than 8% of all lethal injection executions have been botched. Most of them resulted when those charged with carrying them out could not find a usable vein.

Calls grow for US death penalty halt after ‘torturous’ botched execution of Christa Pike

Pike alive but in critical condition as experts call ordeal that unfolded in Tennessee Wednesday ‘unimaginably barbaric’

Top lawyers, doctors and members of the faith community are calling for a moratorium on the US death penalty after Tennessee’s failed attempt to execute Christa Pike left the prisoner alive but in critical condition and receiving life-saving medical care.

The recent spate of harrowingly botched executions across US death penalty states reached a new low late on Wednesday when Tennessee’s governor Bill Lee called off the procedure after Pike had been injected with two full syringes of pentobarbital. She is the only person to have survived being administered 5mg of the sedative – a massive dose that under normal circumstances is considered fatal.

Clay Travis: inside the Maga permadad’s world of sports betting, trans panic and more sports betting

The rightwing media mogul has lost ground to fellow sports bros like Pat McAfee and Joe Rogan. He’s hoping his new venture can recapture some ground

When Maga media blowhard Clay Travis offered $2m to Colin Kaepernick last week to appear on the daily talkshow he hosts with former CIA analyst Buck Sexton, it represented the culmination of a years-long obsession on the right with the onetime NFL star. In Travis’s telling of history, Kaepernick taking a knee during the 2016 NFL season was the event that catalyzed professional sports into the era of “woke” excess from which, he claims, it has been struggling to recover ever since.

But more than simply confirming the right’s longstanding villainization of Kaepernick, Travis’s offer was also a smarmy bid for publicity for his new media venture, Sport & State. Sport & State, which launched in August, is Travis’s bid to get back to his roots as a media mogul who sold the wildly popular Outkick to Fox Sports for a rumored $100m, and reclaim some of the cultural territory lost to fellow sports bros and Magagitators like Pat McAfee, Joe Rogan, Tucker Carlson and Ben Shapiro. But if there’s one thing Sport & State won’t be doing, it’s engaging with anyone beyond the Magaverse. There has been no response from Kaepernick since Travis made his “offer” of $2m to charity in exchange for an interview, which suggests he understands that it was extended more in a spirit of trolling buffoonery than sincerity. No one associated with the left or progressive politics ever appears on Travis’s shows, for the simple reason that they are designed purely for the right to talk to itself. (Some would say the same could be said of the left, although the disregard for dissenting perspectives in the Magasphere seems way more extreme.) More than it heralds a renewal of Travis’s career or an injection of fresh energy into the Trumpist mediasphere, Sport & State is a case study in the stagnation that has taken hold on the right as Donald Trump stares down the barrel of defeat in November’s midterm elections.

A century after the weekend was invented, it has disappeared. Let’s reclaim leisure | Richard Morgan

Henry Ford’s 1926 policy held for decades before eroding into a 24/7 mindset. Here’s what we can do about it

It was a Saturday. In fact, the Saturday.

Almost exactly a century ago, on 25 September 1926, Henry Ford instituted a policy of weekends for his workforce. Although various labor campaigns had existed for decades to try to carve out what we now call the weekend, this was the first widespread adoption.
