At a makeshift lunch counter tucked within a maze of tents at a housing protest camp in Madrid, Sélpide San Luis pointed to the dizzying pace of change.

“We built a city in a week,” said the 26-year-old, whose videos documenting day-to-day life at the encampment have attracted tens of thousands of views on social media, as she pointed to the more than 1,200 tents set up in the central Puerta del Sol square. “We have urban planning, the streets have names and we’ve put surveillance systems in place. And thanks to what we’re doing here, media have not stopped talking about the issue of housing – something that we’ve been trying to get on the agenda for so long.”

Oscar-winning actor celebrated for her outstanding performances in On the Waterfront and North By Northwest

Eva Marie Saint, who has died aged 102, made a lasting impression in two outstanding American films: as Edie Doyle, the wholesome, sensitive, Catholic girl who befriends the docker Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando) in Elia Kazan’s On the Waterfront (1954); and as Eve Kendall, the intriguing beauty helping and hindering the pursued advertising executive (Cary Grant) in Alfred Hitchcock’s North By Northwest (1959).

In the latter, Saint, the coolest and wittiest of the “Hitchcock blondes”, was lit so beautifully that her fair skin looked like porcelain. In the scene when they first meet in the dining car of a Chicago-bound train, Saint and Grant deliver the double-edged banter with supreme style. Assessing him, she says, “Good taste in clothes. Good taste in food.” He continues, “Good taste in women – I like your flavour.”

BERLIJN (ANP) - Maar een op de tien Duitse bedrijven is gewapend tegen cyberaanvallen met kunstmatige intelligentie (AI). Terwijl een op de zes afgelopen jaar waarschijnlijk of misschien doelwit was van zo'n aanval, maken de toezichthouder en de koepel van cyberinspectiebedrijven op uit gezamenlijk onderzoek.

Hackers, zowel uit criminele hoek als in opdracht van een buitenlandse overheid, belagen ondernemingen om bijvoorbeeld bedrijfsgeheimen te stelen of de bedrijfsvoering te saboteren. Ze bedienen zich steeds vaker van AI, schrijven cybersecuritywaakhond BSI en inspectiebedrijf TÜV. Zoals van phishing-e-mails die met kunstmatige intelligentie "precies op de ontvanger zijn toegesneden", waardoor ze veel vertrouwen inboezemen. Of van 'deepfakes' met heel geloofwaardig nagemaakte beelden en stemmen van collega's. Maar AI wordt ook steeds beter in het zelf opsporen van zwakke plekken in de systemen om die vervolgens te misbruiken.

Wie bij de rijkste stad ter wereld aan Dubai, Monaco of een jachthaven vol belastingontwijkers denkt, zit ernaast. De winnaar is San Jose, het kloppende hart van Silicon Valley. En tussen al dat Amerikaanse techgeweld duikt op plaats 28 ineens Utrecht op. Amsterdam staat er niet in.

De lijst meet niet wat inwoners op de bank hebben staan. Hij meet het bruto binnenlands product per inwoner: de economische productie van een stedelijke regio, gedeeld door het aantal inwoners.

Utrecht produceert per inwoner meer dan München, Singapore en Kopenhagen.

Silicon Valley telt het geld

San Jose produceert jaarlijks 238.700 dollar per inwoner. Dat is bijna 57.000 dollar meer dan nummer twee, San Francisco. De top tien:

De Amerikanen domineren: 27 van de veertig steden liggen in de Verenigde Staten. Van de eerste twintig zijn er zestien Amerikaans. Zwitserland levert er vijf: Basel, Genève, Zürich, Bern en Lausanne. Het patroon is overal hetzelfde: veel technologie, farmacie, financiële dienstverlening en relatief weinig inwoners om het over te verdelen.

Utrecht verslaat Amsterdam

Utrecht komt uit op 101.225 dollar per inwoner. Daarmee laat de Domstad Houston, München, Dallas, Singapore en Kopenhagen achter zich.

Dat betekent niet dat iedere Utrechter op een matras vol bankbiljetten slaapt. In het regionale bbp zit ook de productie van de vele forenzen die dagelijks naar de stad reizen. Utrecht profiteert van zijn centrale ligging, een grote zakelijke dienstensector en een stevige kenniseconomie rond het Science Park.

Een hoog bbp per inwoner laat zien waar veel waarde wordt geproduceerd, niet waar iedereen rijk leeft.

Rijk op papier

Het etiket ‘rijkste stad’ verdient dus een bijsluiter. Het bbp per inwoner zegt niets over hoe het geld verdeeld is, over koopkracht, huizenprijzen of armoede. Een stad kan economisch uitzonderlijk productief zijn, terwijl verpleegkundigen en leraren er nauwelijks een woning kunnen betalen. Ook stadsgrenzen spelen mee: hoofdkantoren vallen binnen de regio, een deel van de werknemers woont erbuiten.

FeitenboxSan Jose staat bovenaan met $238.700 bbp per inwoner, gevolgd door San Francisco en Dublin. De VS leveren 27 van de 40 steden. Utrecht staat op 28 met $101.225 en is de enige Nederlandse stad in de lijst. Gemeten wordt economische productie per inwoner, niet inkomen of vermogen.

Geen top honderd

Op sociale media gaat de lijst soms rond als de honderd rijkste steden. Dat klopt niet: de ranglijst telt veertig plaatsen. Het onderliggende onderzoek bekijkt wel duizend steden, maar een openbare top honderd naar bbp per inwoner bestaat niet.

Utrecht mag dus even naast Singapore op het erepodium staan. Alleen ziet de gemiddelde Utrechter die 101.225 dollar nooit op zijn rekening verschijnen. Statistiek blijft de kunst om iedereen rijk te maken zonder één euro over te maken.

MADRID (ANP) - De MotoGP introduceert in 2027 een sprintkwalificatie die de startopstelling voor de sprintrace bepaalt. Het nieuwe format moet nog meer spektakel opleveren voor de toeschouwers, laat de organisatie van de belangrijkste motorsportklasse weten in een persbericht.

In het huidige format rijden de coureurs op zaterdag een kwalificatie, waarna de startopstelling voor zowel de sprintrace als de hoofdrace vaststaat. Daar komt dus nu verandering in met twee aparte kwalificatiemomenten.

De MotoGP volgt daarmee de Formule 1, die ook afzonderlijke kwalificaties heeft voor de sprintrace en de hoofdrace. Met dit verschil dat de MotoGP, in tegenstelling tot de Formule 1, elke grand prix een sprint heeft.

De vrijdag sluit vanaf 2027 af met een sprintkwalificatie van vijftien minuten. De zaterdag begint met de gebruikelijke kwalificatie voor de MotoGP-race, waarna de sprintrace volgt. Op zondag is dan de hoofdrace.

Nine out of ten respondents to a survey of VMware customers say higher licensing costs were prompting them to consider alternatives. Unisphere Research surveyed 269 executives, managers, and professionals at VMware user organizations between December 2025 and February 2026. The study, commissioned by third-party support provider Rimini Street, also found that 54 percent cited the end of perpetual license support as a reason to evaluate other options. The study showed cost remains the leading driver of virtualization roadmap decisions. Seventy-three percent said savings were a top priority. Respondents also identified barriers to change: operational complexity (40 percent), multi-vendor management challenges (38 percent), securing the increased attack surface (37 percent), and team skills requirements (37 percent). Users were looking for choice, flexibility, and control over their virtualization strategies, said Keith Costello, chief operating officer with Rimini Street, which sells third-party support for VMware. "These survey findings reinforce the need for practical, vendor-independent strategies that put business priorities back on the client's terms." Sixty percent of respondents were considering a multi-hypervisor strategy. Forty-eight percent said they did not currently plan to move any assets to VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), Broadcom's subscription platform and preferred migration path. Broadcom agreed to buy VMware in 2022. By November 2024, Gartner was arguing that customers were worse off because of the acquisition. In May 2025, cloud customer group the European Cloud Competition Observatory (ECCO) and cloud trade association CISPE claimed that Broadcom had upped VMware licensing costs to between eight and 15 times their previous levels since it acquired VMware. At the time, Broadcom said it was working to advance the European Union's sovereign cloud objectives and enable enterprises to "accelerate innovation, provide more choice, and address their most complex technology challenges."
