From pillboxes and boaters to bicornes and buckets, characterful hats are making their way from the catwalk to the high street

“Here goes – an order for a million hats,” wrote Jackie Kennedy to Bergdorf Goodman before moving into the White House in the early 1960s. It’s a line that could have been uttered by any number of people working in fashion today, because the hat – and not just the ubiquitous baseball cap – has been enjoying a very characterful resurgence.

This season at the turbo-high-end brand Loro Piana, whose clothes are beloved by tech bros and Kendall Roy, almost every model was wearing a hat. At Thom Browne, straw boaters came shrouded in colourful mesh. At Chloé there were see-through hats to match see-through trenchcoats and white sailor hats atop all-white outfits. Courrège’s hats were space-age, Burberry had big buckets, Bottega Veneta had hats brimming with charisma.

The backstory that has led Waud to the Bois de Boulogne on the first Sunday in October started in London, includes 23 years in Los Angeles as he worked his way up from the bottom rung of the movie industry, and more recently, a co-producer role on the award-winning revival of Cabaret in London’s West End. And from the day in the 1970s when Waud took a trip to Newmarket with his mother, racing has been a thread in the fabric.

PARIJS (ANP/RTR/BLOOMBERG) - De G7-landen stellen de komende vier maanden tot 100 miljoen vaten olie en diesel uit hun noodvoorraden beschikbaar. Dit gebeurt na aandringen van de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump, die Frankrijk en Duitsland had bedreigd met een exportverbod. Trump spreekt op zijn socialemediaplatform Truth Social van een "enorme hoeveelheid".

Volgens de Franse president Emmanuel Macron, die nu de voorzitter is van de G7, wordt de vrijgave gecoördineerd door het Internationaal Energieagentschap (IEA). Naast Frankrijk, Duitsland en de VS bestaat de G7 uit Canada, Italië, Japan en het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Het doel van de vrijgave is om de hoge dieselprijs omlaag te krijgen.

"Europa heeft zojuist ingestemd met het vrijgeven van een enorme hoeveelheid van de ruime dieselvoorraad. Het proces zal onmiddellijk van start gaan", schreef Trump.

Geen exportverbod

Volgens Macron is een exportverbod hiermee van de baan. "We hebben ons samen geschaard achter de vrijgave van deze strategische reserves, met de nadruk op diesel, en we zetten ons er allemaal voor in dat er geen exportverboden komen. President Trump was hier met name heel duidelijk over", aldus de Franse president.

Het afgelopen halfjaar heeft de Iranoorlog gezorgd voor een flinke verstoring van de oliemarkt, met hogere prijzen tot gevolg. Dat komt vooral door de sluiting van de Straat van Hormuz. Snel na het uitbreken van de Iranoorlog gaven landen onder leiding van het IEA ook al 400 miljoen vaten vrij. Trump heeft geklaagd dat Europa daarbij te traag te werk gaat.

"Wij juichen het besluit van de G7-landen toe om geen exportverboden op te leggen aan bondgenoten. Wij steunen een door het IEA gecoördineerde vrijgave van brandstofvoorraden", reageerde voorzitter Ursula von der Leyen van de Europese Commissie via X.

It is designed to be minimally invasive while providing kids with options such as texting and calling. The product is supposed to bridge the gap between independent play outside with an AI technology product.

St. Lucie County in Florida discovered (alt link) a dozen Flock cameras whose ownership it can’t identify, and that the county government had not permitted.

I am reminded of the decade-old story of StingRay cell phone surveillance devices in Washington, DC, whose operators were also unknown.

My guess is that in the StingRay case, the devices were operated by foreign actors. This Flock case is more likely some local government entity that didn’t bother getting approval. Were I a foreign actor, I would rather hack the existing Flock network—like Israel did with Tehran’s surveillance cameras—than risk installing my own.

Regardless, once we normalize a surveillance infrastructure, both friends and foes will take advantage of it.
