The resolution shows little understanding of what Zionism is, who Jews are or how antisemitism works
Tomorrow I will be in synagogue to say Kaddish, the traditional mourner’s prayer, in memory of my father who died eight years ago this week. If I were a member of the Green party, I would have reason to believe that that simple act could soon see me expelled as a racist.
It sounds hyperbolic, but the warning comes from Green party activists opposed to a resolution declaring that Zionism is racism, which will be debated at the party conference this weekend. The motion, which if passed would instantly become party policy, holds that Zionism should be “treated as any other form of racism”. On that logic, given that the Greens do not admit members of self-described racist organisations, they could not tolerate members of self-described Zionist organisations – a category that includes almost every synagogue, or synagogue movement, in Britain and indeed the world. Which is why saying Kaddish could lead to expulsion.

I applaud Anna Tims for her article (Schoolchildren without smartphones penalised with higher bus fares, 26 September), raising the need for a unified approach on this issue to properly tackle the ill effects of such technology on children in the classroom and beyond.
I live in Scotland, where this issue is addressed by making bus travel free for children and young people under the age of 22 with a physical national entitlement card. I am, however, affected by the more general problem of cheaper bus pass options being hidden behind smartphone apps.

Het is niet duidelijk of de veiligheidszorgen te maken hebben met de presidentsverkiezingen in Brazilië, waarvan komende zondag de eerste ronde wordt gehouden. President Luiz Inácio 'Lula' da Silva heeft gewaarschuwd voor buitenlandse inmenging in de verkiezingen, waaronder door de Verenigde Staten. De Amerikaanse president Donald Trump is een ideologische bondgenoot van Lula's voorganger en rivaal Jair Bolsonaro. Diens zoon neemt het nu tegen Lula op bij de verkiezingen.
De Amerikaanse en de Australische ambassade liggen dicht bij elkaar in een buurt van de hoofdstad Brasília met veel ambassades. Onder meer de Nederlandse ambassade ligt nog tussen die twee gebouwen in.
AMSTERDAM (ANP) - Voetbalclub Ajax krijgt de Meester Kackadorisprijs 2026, heeft de Vereniging tegen de Kwakzalverij (VtdK) vrijdag bekendgemaakt. De vereniging kent de prijs jaarlijks toe aan een persoon of organisatie die "kwakzalverij bevordert, zonder die zelf te bedrijven". Ajax krijgt de prijs vanwege de sponsorovereenkomst van de voetbalclub met supplementenbedrijf Vitakruid.
Vitakruid verkoopt volgens de VtdK een groot assortiment voedingssupplementen en hanteert daarbij gezondheidsclaims "waarvoor een deugdelijke wetenschappelijke onderbouwing ontbreekt". Ook zou Vitakruid waarschuwingen van het RIVM over de risico's van kruidenpreparaten bagatelliseren, aldus VtdK.
Ajax heeft honderdduizenden supporters, onder wie veel jongeren, en heeft daarmee een maatschappelijke voorbeeldfunctie, stelt VtdK. "Juist daarom mag volgens de jury van Ajax worden verwacht dat de club kritisch kijkt naar de gezondheidsclaims en commerciële praktijken van haar sponsors."
AMSTERDAM (ANP) - De AEX-index op de Amsterdamse aandelenbeurs is vrijdag met een flinke winst gesloten. Chipbedrijven sloten met forse plussen, onder meer door een koersstijging van Nvidia in New York. Chipbedrijf Besi klom 7 procent en eindigde bovenaan de AEX-index, gevolgd door ASMI met een stijging van 5,5 procent. Chipmachinefabrikant ASML won 3,5 procent.
Beleggers hadden daarnaast aandacht voor de banengroei in de Verenigde Staten, die in september zwakker uitviel dan verwacht. Bij een zwakke arbeidsmarkt heeft de Amerikaanse centrale bank minder ruimte om de rente verder te verhogen tegen de hoge inflatie.
De AEX sloot 1,3 procent hoger op 1116,71 punten, nadat de Amsterdamse hoofdindex donderdag nog 1,1 procent was gezakt. De MidKap sloot een fractie lager op 1069,87 punten. De beurzen in Parijs, Londen en Frankfurt klommen tot ruim 1 procent.
De olieprijzen daalden na een fikse stijging een dag eerder. Brentolie, olie uit Europa en het Midden-Oosten, zakte bijna 1 procent tot 101,33 dollar per vat en Amerikaanse olie werd ruim 2 procent goedkoper op 90,86 dollar per vat.
De G7-landen stellen de komende vier maanden tot 100 miljoen vaten olie en diesel uit hun noodvoorraden beschikbaar. Dat gebeurt nadat de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump tegen Frankrijk en Duitsland had gedreigd met een exportverbod. "Europa heeft zojuist ingestemd met het vrijgeven van een enorme hoeveelheid van de ruime dieselvoorraad. Het proces zal onmiddellijk van start gaan", schreef Trump op Truth Social.
Speciaalchemieconcern Corbion zakte 2,6 procent in de MidKap. Topman Olivier Rigaud treedt in mei volgend jaar af. Hij wil volgens Corbion geen derde termijn als topman van het bedrijf.
Volvo Cars zakte ruim 7 procent in Zweden. De autofabrikant kampte met dalende autoverkopen in het derde kwartaal en trekt zijn verwachtingen voor het hele jaar in. Het Zweedse bedrijf heeft in China last van flinke concurrentie van Chinese automerken.

For months, I’ve been noticing that many people email me ‘tips’ (I put in quotation marks because they’re sometimes not tips, but more, my Instagram account was banned, please help me) that are CLEARLY written by AI. I can tell this because the AI responses seem to keep using the same or similar words that it believes would apply to journalists, or are how journalists speak, but as a real, human journalist for more than ten years, I know that journalists don’t actually speak like that.
