We are used to seeing satellite images of tropical storms from above the clouds, featuring the characteristic white swirls around the eye of the storm. This false-colour, polarised image from Copernicus Sentinel-1 shows us the surface of the sea beneath the clouds, as seen by the satellite’s radar instrument. The sea conditions reflect the strong winds as Typhoon Surigae passes over.
The image, captured on 28 September 2026, shows Typhoon Surigae as it was moving north-eastwards in an area of the Philippine Sea about 200 km south of the island of Shikoku, Japan. By 1 October, the storm, also known as Typhoon no. 26, was almost 1000 km away, roughly 200 km south of Tokyo. It is one of several typhoons in the Pacific Ocean at the moment.
The relatively calm seas at the eye of the storm are clearly visible in dark blue in this image. The colorful effect is created using two radar polarisations, each assigned to a different colour. The orange-yellow ring in the image is where the radar instrument has detected rough ocean conditions and strong winds.
The lighter blue areas of the image show where the radar has detected a different kind of signal and it most likely denotes ocean and wind conditions that differ to the bright yellow and orange areas. Some of the possible causes are lower wind speeds, less sea surface movement or areas of rain.
Some bright yellow flecks are seen in the lower part of the image. While these look like small islands, there are no land masses in that region – they are most likely to be areas of concentrated wind and rain.
When this radar image was acquired, Typhoon Surigae had strong winds with maximum gusts of up to 240 km per hour, with dangerous ocean conditions including strong swells and waves reaching up to 7 m. Since then, it has weakened considerably and is currently classed as a tropical depression, with maximum wind speeds of 55 km per hour.

Mattie Music Group, owners of Bill Withers’ back catalogue, contend the Grammy winner infringed on Just the Two of Us
Olivia Dean has been accused of plagiarizing the Bill Withers classic Just the Two of Us.
The owners of Withers’ back catalogue aimed that allegation at his fellow Grammy winner in a copyright infringement lawsuit filed on Thursday in US federal court in Los Angeles.

Palestine Action activists brandished whips, hammers and kebab skewers to intimidate security guards and keep them at bay during a break-in at an Israel-linked arms factory, a court has heard.
Five defendants are accused by prosecutors of being part of a “black team”, wearing black jumpsuits, whose role was to overwhelm security guards, so that a “red team”, wearing red jumpsuits, could break into the Elbit systems factory in Filton, near Bristol, and smash up equipment including drones.

Half a mile of countryside separates Drumcree parish church and Garvaghy Road. You can walk it in 15 minutes, listening to birdsong. The protesters gathered at each end, however, speak of grievances that go back decades and centuries to explain why a dispute once thought settled has returned to torment Northern Ireland.
Up on the hill at Drumcree this week, Paul, a 64-year-old Orangeman who declined to give his surname, said for too long he and his brethren had been denied the right to parade along a traditional route that would honour Protestant forefathers who fell at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 and the Somme in 1916.

At the Labour party conference Andy Burnham revealed that Hamlet, Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and Tony Harrison’s poem V are his favourite works of literature. The UK’s first prime minister with an English literature degree was not the only political figure sharing his book choices last week. Barack Obama, the US’s most literary president since Abraham Lincoln, launched a new podcast in which he discusses six books that shaped him with writer friends.
First up was the actor – and recently turned short story writer – Tom Hanks on Marilynne Robinson’s Gilead, a meditation on faith, fatherhood and forgiveness in the form of a letter written by a 76-year-old pastor to his son. It was an unabashedly highbrow start. With the exception of John le Carré’s cold war classic Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Mr Obama’s selections are American: Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon, Cormac McCarthy’s All the Pretty Horses, James Baldwin’s essays The Fire Next Time and Robert Penn Warren’s All the King’s Men. Questions of democracy, race, power and violence are all here.

Tomorrow I will be in synagogue to say Kaddish, the traditional mourner’s prayer, in memory of my father who died eight years ago this week. If I were a member of the Green party, I would have reason to believe that that simple act could soon see me expelled as a racist.
It sounds hyperbolic, but the warning comes from Green party activists opposed to a resolution declaring that Zionism is racism, which will be debated at the party conference this weekend. The motion, which if passed would instantly become party policy, holds that Zionism should be “treated as any other form of racism”. On that logic, given that the Greens do not admit members of self-described racist organisations, they could not tolerate members of self-described Zionist organisations – a category that includes almost every synagogue, or synagogue movement, in Britain and indeed the world. Which is why saying Kaddish could lead to expulsion.

Gunners visit WSL leaders Manchester City on Sunday
Renée Slegers says she has felt the full support of Arsenal’s board and praised her senior players for showing “monumental leadership” this week as she vows to find solutions to recent poor form before Sunday’s pivotal trip to Manchester City.
One win in five matches has put Slegers under mounting pressure. Arsenal let slip a two-goal lead to draw at Paris FC in the Women’s Champions League on Wednesday and in the WSL they have slipped seven points behind City, the leaders and defending champions, having scored only twice in their four league games.
