Time to ditch the iron? I spent six months testing the best clothes steamers – here are my favourites

Steam through the laundry pile with our expert’s top picks for smoothing creases on cotton, linen, silk and more

• How to look after your knitwear

I grew up in a household where everything was ironed. And I mean everything: tea towels, pyjamas, bath mats. Perhaps as a result of watching my mother (and yes, it was always my mother) spend hours every week standing at an ironing board, I revolted. My heart sinks every time I have to go into battle with an iron. But how do we banish irons while still getting linen trousers to look crisp? I present the clothes steamer.

Clothes steamers use heat and moisture rather than pressure to smooth fabric. A small onboard tank heats water into a steady flow of steam, which you run over garments while they hang. Instead of pressing fibres flat like an iron, the steam causes them to swell and relax, releasing creases without the need for an ironing board.

How best to punish City? Restitution over retribution, then hand club to the fans | Jonathan Liew

There are no real precedents and emotions are still raw, but good can come from this mess if ownership models change

A 17-year transfer embargo. Replay the entire era with all the original players. Restore the 2009 squad and force them to mount a title challenge with Stephen Ireland, Martin Petrov and Richard Dunne. Force Ferran Soriano to drive a parade bus backwards through Manchester, once for every major trophy won. Ban the Poznan, or at least make City fans do it facing forwards.

Yes, in the week since it emerged that Manchester City have been found guilty of all the financial charges laid against them by the Premier League, a great and cathartic silliness has begun to stalk the land. The Sainsbury’s account on Instagram posting a picture that reads “114 unexpected items in the bagging area”. The relentless trolling from Domino’s Pizza, which claims to have “irrefutable evidence that pineapple is the best pizza topping”.

Sargasso

Hopeloos Genuanceerd

Closing Time | Ode aan Banksy

You’re so provocative, so underground

And I never wanna see your face

Denken we.

The FP-7 is being developed as a ballistic interceptor for the 'Freyja' program. Until its full integration into the system is complete, it is considered a cost-effective alternative to the American ATACMS."

Ook complimenten voor de marketingafdeling, de slogan van Fire Point is: "If not us, then who?"

Gaia Alari’s Lilting Animations are Drawn Frame by Frame

Gaia Alari’s works are defined by a distinct, effervescent visual language. Made from thousands of handmade drawings on paper, the artist’s elaborate animations put on strikingly tactile performances as fleeting marks of oil pastel and charcoal dance across the screen.

Meandering botanical forms, gestural bodies, and sweeping birds converge into fluid loops that create a rhythm reminiscent of a stream of consciousness. Whether Alari is collaborating with a brand, exploring personal interests, or creating static illustrations, it’s clear that each piece tells a distinct story. The 100 Best TV Shows of the 21st Century

Last week, the NY Times dropped a list of The 100 Best TV Shows of the 21st Century, as picked by a panel of “more than 500 influential stars, showrunners and other notable names in the world of TV”. The rankings have already been dissected online six ways from Sunday, but the link got lost in my forest of browser tabs and so here it is, a bit late but still interesting.

Here are some of my personal favorites from the list and arrowed opinions on whether some should be higher or lower on the list: Halt and Catch Fire (↑), Reservation Dogs (↑), Shogun (↑↑↑), The Great British Bake Off, Planet Earth, Downton Abbey (↓), The Good Place (↑), Normal People, Schitt’s Creek, Andor (↑↑), Severance (↓), Band of Brothers (↑), Deadwood (↑), The Crown (↓), Chernobyl (↑), The Americans (↑), Six Feet Under (↓), Girls (↓), Arrested Development, The Office (US), 30 Rock, Game of Thrones, Fleabag (↑), Succession, Mad Men, The Wire (↑), and Breaking Bad (↓).

There are many excellent shows that didn’t make the list — the one that immediately pops into my mind is My Brilliant Friend. As for stuff that’s on there that perhaps could be replaced with something more worthy, I’ll hold my tongue. I do think the inclusion of some of the more recent shows on the list will not age well when this is looked back on in, say, 10 years.

Social Media Harms Democracy By Spreading Rumors, Survey Shows

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Reuters: A growing number of people think social media manipulates and divides people and harms democracy, Pew Research Center said on Thursday, echoing rising concern and tighter scrutiny across the world. Companies running popular social platforms, including Meta, Snap, and TikTok, have faced thousands of lawsuits and paid large sums to settle claims that they harmed users. Governments, meanwhile, have sought foolproof ways to protect their citizens' privacy.

Australia has proposed rules to let users opt out of algorithmically recommended feeds, after becoming the first country to ban social media for children under 16. Pew's latest survey showed that 82% of Australian adults support the government's move to restrict social media access for children. A majority of respondents said social media informs people and gives them a voice in politics, but there was a broad rise in those who now see social media as a "bad thing" compared to 2022, according to the report.

People in wealthier countries, including the US, Canada and UK, are more inclined to believe that social media is harming democracy, versus their counterparts in economies with lower gross domestic product per capita -- such as Ghana, Kenya and Nigeria. The US is among the most skeptical, with 64% of adult respondents saying social media harms democracy. The share of people who consider social media bad for democracy increased in 16 of 26 countries where older data was available. Pew Research said it surveyed more than 45,000 people in 37 countries, while polling an additional 5,511 US adults on American social media use.

Migratierecht-expert is verbaasd
