The co-pilot of flydubai flight FZ1073 used a crash axe to attempt to carry out a “terrorist attack” during the flight, the United Arab Emirates prosecutor general said on Saturday, according to a state news agency.
The UAE statement cited the prosecutor general as saying the co-pilot also tried to take control of the plane during Wednesday’s attack on the Israel-bound flight. Passengers and crew intervened to subdue the co-pilot and stabilise the plane. Officials said the co-pilot’s actions nearly crashed the flight with 182 people on board by sending it into a sharp plunge.

If a third runway is built at Heathrow, what will be the impact on the wealth of the nation? It will cost us somewhere between £23.4bn and £62.5bn. These are not my figures; they weren’t calculated by environmental groups, but by the Department for Transport.
For decades, government ministers have told us that airport expansion is essential for “growth”. As chancellor, Rachel Reeves claimed that a third runway at Heathrow would add 0.43% to GDP, figures we later discovered came from a report commissioned by the airport. The transport department’s own analysis concluded that the real addition to GDP would be between 0.03% and 0.05%: eight to 14 times less. Against this, it weighed the social and environmental costs of the project, to reveal a massive net loss. It found that a third runway would cause major harm to the health and wellbeing of up to 3 million local people.

MOSKOU (ANP/DPA) - De voormalige Duitse bondskanselier Gerhard Schröder is toegetreden tot de raad van commissarissen van de Russische supermarktketen Hyperglobus. Eerder kreeg Schröder in het Westen veel kritiek op zijn banden met het Russische bedrijfsleven en president Vladimir Poetin.
De 82-jarige Schröder ontwikkelde een hechte band met Poetin toen hij van 1998 tot 2005 bondskanselier van Duitsland was, en later toen hij voor Russische staatsbedrijven werkte. Na de Russische inval in Oekraïne in 2022 kwamen die werkzaamheden hem echter op felle kritiek te staan.
Duitsland nam hem toen zijn door de belastingbetaler gefinancierde kantoor en medewerkers in de Bondsdag af. Schröder stapte dat jaar ook op uit de raad van commissarissen van oliebedrijf Rosneft en zag af van plannen om toe te treden tot de raad van commissarissen van Gazprom.
Hyperglobus is in 2025 afgesplitst van het Duitse Globus en opereert nu zelfstandig. Het bedrijf heeft meer dan twintig Russische supermarkten, die nog steeds de naam Globus voeren.
MOTEGI (ANP) - Motorcoureur Marc Márquez heeft de sprintrace gewonnen in de MotoGP bij de Grote Prijs van Japan. De Spanjaard liep door zijn zege kostbare punten in op zijn landgenoot Jorge Martín, die leidt in het kampioenschap. Het verschil na de korte race op het circuit van Motegi bedraagt 7 punten.
Aprilia-rijder Martín startte van poleposition, maar hij zag in de eerste bochtenserie Márquez op zijn Ducati voorbijkomen. De zevenvoudig wereldkampioen in de koningsklasse van de motorsport reed vervolgens onbedreigd naar de zege.
Martín finishte als tweede, maar hij werd kort na de finish teruggezet naar de derde plaats, omdat hij in de laatste ronde buiten de baan was gekomen. De Braziliaan Diogo Moreira schoof door naar de tweede plaats.
De hoofdrace in Motegi is zondag (aanvang 7.00 uur Nederlandse tijd). De GP van Japan is de zestiende ronde in het kampioenschap, dat in totaal 22 grands prix telt.
ABU DHABI (ANP/RTR) - De piloot die woensdag een andere piloot aanviel tijdens een vlucht van flydubai naar Tel Aviv probeerde een terroristische aanval uit te voeren, zegt de procureur-generaal van de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten volgens het staatspersbureau WAM.
De copiloot viel de gezagvoerder in de cockpit aan met een bijl en probeerde de controle over het toestel over te nemen, aldus de openbaar aanklager.
Volgens de procureur-generaal loopt er nog een onderzoek om de omstandigheden van het incident, de motieven en eventuele verbanden vast te stellen. Ook wordt nog fysiek en digitaal bewijsmateriaal bekeken. Ook een woordvoerder van flydubai meldt dat het onderzoek naar de precieze omstandigheden nog loopt.
Het Saudische ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken meldde donderdag dat uit het eerste onderzoek bleek dat de copiloot zijn collega had aangevallen. Volgens Israël wilde hij het toestel laten neerstorten. De copiloot werd uiteindelijk door passagiers en de gezagvoerder overmeesterd.
SEPANG (ANP) - Max Verstappen heeft in de derde vrije training voor de Grote Prijs van Bahrein in Maleisië de tweede tijd gereden. De viervoudig wereldkampioen in de Formule 1 was op het circuit van Sepang iets minder snel dan Kimi Antonelli. De Nederlander gaf in zijn Red Bull 0,278 seconden toe op de Italiaanse kampioenschapsleider in zijn Mercedes.
Isack Hadjar, de teamgenoot van Verstappen, was ook goed op dreef in de derde sessie. De Fransman klokte de derde tijd. George Russell van Mercedes, vorige week winnaar in de GP van Azerbeidzjan, zette de vierde tijd neer.
Later zaterdag (10.00 uur) is de kwalificatie voor de race.
WK-stand
Verstappen was vrijdag de snelste in de eerste training en noteerde de vierde tijd in de tweede sessie. Hij zei na afloop zich wat zorgen te maken over de grote bandenslijtage op het warme asfalt. De Nederlander reed in de derde training slechts vier ronden.
De nummer zes in de WK-stand wacht nog op zijn eerste zege van 2026. Verstappen eindigde vorige week in Azerbeidzjan als tweede achter Russell. Het was zijn vierde tweede plaats dit seizoen. Ook werd hij drie keer derde. Antonelli leidt de titelstrijd met 66 punten voorsprong op teamgenoot Russell.
De GP van Bahrein werd eerder dit jaar vanwege de oorlog in Iran uitgesteld en verplaatst naar Maleisië. Het is voor het eerst sinds 2017 dat er een grand prix in Sepang op het programma staat. Verstappen won negen jaar geleden de laatste race.
