The Father Ted co-creator Graham Linehan has been paid £25,000 in compensation by the Metropolitan police and received an apology after his arrest over his gender-critical social media posts.

Mexico has launched an investigation into whether the US lied about its involvement in the capture and secretive transfer of a top Sinaloa cartel member in 2024, in what would be a potential violation of the country’s sovereignty.
The US has long denied it played any role in the operation to detain the drug lord Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada García, a founder of the Sinaloa cartel, inside Mexico. Recent reporting by the local media outlet Pie de Nota, however, suggested that the FBI was involved in his capture.

Rice and Ødegaard were born 28 days apart and, partly because of the latter’s fast-tracking into the Norway senior team, did not play against each other at age-group level. Their face-offs have been limited to Mikel Arteta’s intense training sessions at London Colney, where they are depended upon to set standards. They are leaders of differing style and status who will be expected to galvanise their national teams on Saturday.

Caruana Galizia was killed in 2017 by a remotely detonated bomb placed under the driver’s seat of her car, after writing a series of reports on political and financial corruption in Malta. The government’s handling of the investigation led to mass protests and ultimately to the resignation of the Maltese prime minister, Joseph Muscat.

WASHINGTON (ANP/RTR) - Het Israëlische leger zal zich de komende dagen terugtrekken uit een van de bezette gebieden waar het Libanese leger de controle moet overnemen. Dat heeft een Amerikaanse functionaris donderdag gezegd. Bovendien zou worden gewerkt aan het in kaart brengen van meer van dit soort "pilot zones" (proefgebieden).
Als onderdeel van een akkoord dat Libanese en Israëlische vertegenwoordigers twee weken geleden sloten in Washington moet Israël zich terugtrekken uit twee delen van het zuiden van Libanon. Het Libanese leger moet daar de controle overnemen om te kijken hoe dat gaat. Het leger staat bekend als zwak en niet opgewassen tegen de gewapende beweging Hezbollah, die ook aanwezig is in het gebied.
Eerder kondigden Israël en Italië aan dat de onderhandelingen tussen Libanon en Israël volgende week verder zouden gaan in Rome. Dat werd echter van Libanese zijde weersproken. De Libanese vertegenwoordigers zouden alleen komen als Israël zich terugtrekt uit de twee proefgebieden.
GAVARNIE-GÈDRE (ANP) - De Noorse wielrenner Torstein Træen heeft donderdag in de Tour de France een rib gebroken. Dat blijkt uit het medische communiqué van de Tourorganisatie. De renner van Uno-X Mobility reed in de gele leiderstrui toen hij ten val kwam in de afdaling van de Col du Tourmalet.
Op het moment van zijn val reed hij al op geruime achterstand en leek hij de gele trui te moeten overdragen aan Tadej Pogačar, die de etappe won. Na de val moest hij worden nagekeken door de dokter. Hij reed de rit wel uit, en kwam uiteindelijk als 51e op 29.55 minuten van de Sloveense wereldkampioen over de eindstreep in Gavarnie-Gèdre.
Træen veroverde de gele trui dinsdag door met een grote kopgroep mee te gaan in de etappe naar Foix. Ondanks een ruime voorsprong van bijna 8 minuten op de kandidaten voor de eindzege kon hij slechts twee dagen genieten van het geel. Het is nog onduidelijk of de Noor vrijdag de Tour hervat.
