Farage fact check: the truth behind five of his resignation statements

The Reform leader made some punchy accusations in his video, not all of which stand up to scrutiny

Nigel Farage’s “statement on my future” video address was lengthy and had a lot to say about his apparent sacrifices for the sake of politics. But do they stand up?

Nigel Farage resigns to stand in ‘people vs establishment’ byelection - The Latest

Nigel Farage has announced his resignation as the MP for Clacton, triggering a byelection in which he intends to stand as a candidate. The Reform UK leader is under scrutiny over his finances, with two investigations by the parliamentary standards watchdog over undeclared gifts.

During a 15-minute press conference, he accused the media of a ‘pile-on’ over his personal finances, and harassment of his family. He said his decision was part of ‘sticking two fingers up at the establishment’ and would prove the public want him to stay on as an MP.

Qatar says Iran fully responsible after tankers struck in strait of Hormuz

Three vessels, including a Qatari LNG carrier, struck within hours close to Oman

Qatar has warned Iran it will bear full legal responsibility after three tankers, including a Qatari LNG vessel, were struck within hours in the strait of Hormuz.

All three vessels were struck close to Oman which had suggested a new shipping corridor close to its coastline – a proposal opposed by Iran, which wants to charge ships using the waterway.

I’m rich – defend me, be happy for me, says Farage to poor voters in Clacton. They are just his collateral damage | John Harris

The Reform UK leader’s ruse to head off scrutiny by forcing a byelection may work, but it’s all about him: no one else gains anything from it

Most people who closely follow British politics probably know the basics about Jaywick, an enclave of Clacton, on the Essex coast. A sprawling tangle of tracks, paths and old holiday shacks repurposed as permanent homes, it has been ranked as England’s poorest area several times since 2011, most recently in October last year.

I first visited in 2014, during the byelection campaign that would see the former Tory Douglas Carswell – remember him? – chosen as the UK Independence Party’s first MP. “Look at us,” one man told me. “We’re a backwater no one gives a shit about.” He was one of many Nigel Farage fans I spoke to; in 2024, when local people elected the Reform leader as Clacton’s new MP, many presumably did so with hopes of Jaywick’s neglect coming to an end. I suspect, unfortunately, that Farage’s extra-parliamentary earnings and international gallivanting have rather been giving them the impression that Jaywick remains a backwater no one gives a shit about.

Austrian campaign aims to save writer Stefan Zweig’s Salzburg villa after Porsche tunnel row

Supporters hope to stop 17th-century Villa Europa passing into private hands after Wolfgang Porsche unexpectedly put it on market

Austrian cultural figures have launched a campaign to buy a villa once home to the writer Stefan Zweig after its owner, the automotive magnate Wolfgang Porsche, unexpectedly put it on the market following a row over his plans to build a private tunnel for his car collection.

Zweig, the Austrian Jewish writer whose novels inspired the Wes Anderson film The Grand Budapest Hotel, lived in the 17th-century property until 1934 when he was driven out of Salzburg by the Austro-fascist regime and his family was forced to sell it at a rock-bottom price.

Enigmatic Iconography and Incomplete Narratives Merge in Phlegm’s Murals and Engravings

Enigmatic Iconography and Incomplete Narratives Merge in Phlegm’s Murals and Engravings

In his characteristically illustrative, enigmatic style, Phlegm’s monochrome compositions evoke wonder, mischief, and riddles. Hybrid figures, strange interactions, and uncanny combinations of objects fill his idosyncratic murals, about which we can only speculate the meaning. “I think a lot about the barriers between people understanding each other, and I think I enjoy making artwork that floats in some grey area,” the London-based artist tells Colossal.

The past several years have been dominated by a fascination with copper engraving, “to the point where I pretty much stopped painting murals,” Phlegm says. He’s spent much of the time in an almost monastic reverence to printmaking techniques of the Northern Renaissance, initially delving into the work of a group of German printmakers known as The Little Masters, who practiced their craft on minuscule surfaces just an inch or two across.

Phlegm’s reimagining of Albrecht Dürer’s “Knight, Death, and the Devil” (1513)

In what may seem to be in total opposition to the broad strokes required to paint a mural several stories high, engraving requires painstaking attention to detail. Phlegm then embarked on an ambitious completist project focused exclusively on Albrecht Dürer’s “Knight, Death, and the Devil,” which he created in 1513 and incorporated a wealth of iconography, the meaning of which is still debated by art historians today.

“I spent a great deal of time collecting old copies of it, studying it under a microscope, and figuring out how the image was created,” the artist says. “The last two years, I’ve been engraving my own version where I’ve replaced everything for my own but tried to stay true to the line work and layout of the composition.”

As he returns to mural-making, Phlegm revisits themes that crop up regularly in his work, from folk law and ritual to prehistory and archaeology. “I think in my work, I’ve always loved telling broken stories that can land as either dark or light— narratives that feel hard to read clearly,” he says. With archaeology, for instance, “you can piece together tangible parts of a story and get glimpses of moments from the past, but it’s often broken or without context. I’m very drawn to this feeling.”

The idea of honesty in art is not a new one, but discussion of its role has emerged with more gusto in the era of the internet, social media, and generative AI. Phlegm describes his approach as one centered around honesty, which might be further defined in terms of candidness, sincerity, and attention to detail. His cryptic works appear to possess a narrative, but what that is, we’re never totally sure. But that’s the point. “I often meticulously work out their history and intricate stories only to leave out large chunks,” the artist says.

In designing a mural, he might write an entire story and format a set of frames like one might find in a comic book, but only a fragment of this tale gets translated onto a wall. “It helps me make something that feels authentic and stops me approaching the space with a mindset tainted by trying to make something look good,” he says. “Looking good tends to come secondary to the storytelling.” Nevertheless, having focused for a time on very intricate, small-scale work, his approach to large-scale murals has become what he describes as more fluid and confident.

Over the past few centuries, humans have decimated bird populations — you can hear it in the thinning of the dawn chorus — but it’s difficult to notice sometimes because of shifting baseline syndrome.

NASA calls time on CAPSTONE after four years of lunar orbit lessons

After four years of operations around the Moon, NASA's CAPSTONE mission has bitten the lunar dust, in a manner of speaking. The Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment (CAPSTONE) was launched in 2022, with a primary mission to validate the near-rectilinear halo orbit (NRHO) intended for NASA's "paused" Gateway space station. Launched in June 2022 on a Rocket Lab Electron rocket, CAPSTONE had a troubled start to life, briefly giving controllers the silent treatment before slipping into lunar orbit in November 2022. The diminutive spacecraft was the first US commercial mission to orbit the Moon and spent an initial six months checking out the NRHO planned for the Gateway before its mission was extended and the spacecraft became, according to NASA, "a testbed for advanced communications, networking, autonomous navigation, and software-defined satellite technologies." The spacecraft was used to try out autonomous navigation software, which is useful when NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN) has limited availability. During the Artemis II mission, for example, communications passes dropped to just a few per week. CAPSTONE was also used to test delay/disruption-tolerant networking (DTN), designed to handle lengthy communications delays and frequent signal gaps. "CAPSTONE became the first to fly the latest DTN protocols beyond Earth orbit and the first to run them in NASA's core Flight System, an open source framework that can be implemented on any spacecraft," NASA stated. However, continued NASA funding appears to have required justification after CAPSTONE completed its primary mission. On July 6, the agency announced that its CAPSTONE activities ended last month. While the spacecraft had a productive second life, hosting new applications and experiments, uncertainty around Gateway's future could have put a question mark over continued operations, although NASA has not stated that this was the case. It is unclear what a NASA-free future looks like for CAPSTONE. The spacecraft was designed and built by Terran Orbital and is owned and operated by Advanced Space. "Advanced Space will continue to use the spacecraft as a technology development testbed," NASA said. ®
