Moederdagcadeau

From slim chance to shiny and fat, pygmy possums back from the brink

From slim chance to shiny and fat, pygmy possums back from the brink. The tiny mammal's population was decimated by drought and bushfires, but after five years of struggle they are starting to thrive. (Australia)

If there's a job in television open, I'm moving to Bangor

In 1997, a 19 year old Danny Cashman, influenced by his favorite late night talk shows, created Bangor, Maine's first, with himself as host. The Nite Show enjoyed success as one of the few ever local programs in this format, running through a few incarnations over the years, with several breaks for college and various gigs. Then finally revived in 2010 for an extended run, until now. For the penultimate show, he got a visit from one of people who inspired him from the beginning.

Please read the words DIVERSITY, EQUITY, and INCLUSION and think deeply about their meaning —individually and collectively.

Diversity: the condition of having or being composed of differing elements: variety.

Equity: the quality of being fair and impartial.

Inclusion: the act or practice of including people who have historically been excluded (often because of their race, gender, sexuality, or disability).

DEI is meant only to enhance the priority of our institutions and workplaces to provide equal opportunity to the many groups that make up our beautifully diverse nation.

These formerly unassailable ideas have been aspirationally woven into our nation’s entire history, even if our idea of who is equal has thankfully evolved to include more than just white men.

From the Declaration of Independence to the 14th Amendment granting equal protection for all citizens, to the 15th Amendment granting Black men the right to vote, to the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote, to the Civil Rights Act outlawing discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, we have moved toward a more fair and less discriminatory society. The symbolism of the Statue of Liberty as a welcoming beacon to those fleeing forms of discrimination to find refuge in the melting pot of the US is a cornerstone of the American story. The current attack on DEI is nothing less than a betrayal of American values and aspirations. The attack on DEI is very literally a Republican policy of discriminating against those who oppose discrimination in their businesses and organizations. When have racism, sexism, homophobia, or the like been okay in plain sight from our leadership, much less turned into law that punishes those trying to provide equality? I feel like I’m in a dystopian mirror world. Terrifyingly, this is here and now, and catalyzed mainly by one power-hungry narcissist who is a deranged, egomaniacal, insecure, tyrannical, yapster. If you oppose the mean-spirited embrace of discrimination like I do, please use every tool at your disposal to push back, especially by voting in EVERY election, including the midterms. We have power in numbers if we use it!

Republicans Try To Cram Decade-Long AI Regulation Ban Into Budget Reconciliation Bill

An anonymous reader quotes a report from 404 Media: Late last night, House Republicans introduced new language to the Budget Reconciliation bill that will immiserate the lives of millions of Americans by cutting their access to Medicaid, and making life much more difficult for millions more by making them pay higher fees when they seek medical care. While a lot of attention will be justifiably given to these cuts, the bill has also crammed in new language that attempts to entirely stop states from enacting any regulation against artificial intelligence.

"...no State or political subdivision thereof may enforce any law or regulation regulating artificial intelligence models, artificial intelligence systems, or automated decision systems during the 10 year period beginning on the date of the enactment of this Act," says the text of the bill introduced Sunday night by Congressman Brett Guthrie of Kentucky, Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. The text of the bill will be considered by the House at the budget reconciliation markup on May 13.

That language of the bill, how it goes on to define AI and other "automated systems," and what it considers "regulation," is broad enough to cover relatively new generative AI tools and technology that has existed for much longer. In theory, that language will make it impossible to enforce many existing and proposed state laws that aim to protect people from and inform them about AI systems. [...] In theory none of these states will be able to enforce these laws if Republicans manage to pass the Budget Reconciliation bill with this current language.
