EINDHOVEN (ANP) - Xavi Hernández houdt een goed gevoel over aan zijn eerste weken als bondscoach van het Nederlands elftal. De Spanjaard ziet ook genoeg verbeterpunten, zei hij op een persconferentie in het Philips Stadion na de thuiszege van 2-1 op Servië in de Nations League.

"We wilden voor rust op balbezit spelen en probeerden met het doorschuiven van Teun Koopmeiners een overtalsituatie op het middenveld te creëren", aldus Xavi. "Servië speelde echter man op man en we kregen geen grip op ze. Dat deden zij goed. Toen we na rust in een andere formatie speelden, ging het beter."

Oranje verdedigde in de slotfase, na het uitvallen van Micky van de Ven, met moeite de voorsprong. "We hebben gestreden als een familie. We hebben moeten lijden", aldus Xavi, die de internationals van Oranje een compliment gaf. "Ik weet nu hoe ze zijn, als mens. Hun houding was deze twee weken geweldig. We moeten beter verdedigen en ook beter aanvallen, maar we staan wel bovenaan in de groep met 8 punten."

Xavi zag deze interlandperiode met Brian Brobbey (Sunderland), Lutsharel Geertruida (PSV), Cody Gakpo (Liverpool), Jan Paul van Hecke (Tottenham Hotspur) en Micky van de Ven (Tottenham Hotspur) vijf internationals geblesseerd raken. De volgende keer wil hij in een drukke interlandperiode met meer spelers gaan werken, zei hij. "Vermoeidheid speelde een grote rol. Daar moeten we rekening mee houden."

Oranje voetbalde de voorbije twee weken in verschillende systemen. "We weten nu hoe we moeten domineren, op verschillende manieren. Maar we weten ook hoe we soms in een laag blok of in een middenblok moeten verdedigen. Ik ben trots op de spelers, we deden het goed", aldus Xavi. "Ik ga nu eerst wat uitrusten, want het was intens. Ik wil de volgende interlandperiode in november verder bouwen aan deze groep. Ik ga door met iedereen in de gaten te houden. We zijn een familie aan het creëren."

LONDEN (ANP) - De Verenigde Staten hebben in het weekend in allerijl twaalf bommenwerpers van de Britse luchtmachtbasis Fairford gehaald na nieuwe dreigementen over een door Iran gesteund complot tegen de basis. Dat meldt de New York Times op basis van twee ingewijden.

Zeker drie vliegtuigen zijn zondag op hun thuisbasis in de Amerikaanse staat South Dakota geland.

Het Pentagon heeft het vertrek van de bommenwerpers bevestigd, maar heeft geweigerd om een relatie te leggen met dreigementen.

Vorig weekend werden vijf Britse mannen gearresteerd die werden verdacht van het voorbereiden van een terroristische actie, eveneens bij de basis Fairford. De politie had een melding gekregen van drie verdachte witte busjes bij de luchtmachtbasis. De busjes werden door de explosievendienst gecontroleerd. Er werd vloeibare brandstof aangetroffen, maar geen explosieven.

De mannen werden op borgtocht vrijgelaten, maar het onderzoek van de politie gaat verder. De Britse regering denkt dat Iran bij het incident een rol speelde.

Only 150 of 2,189 titles published in UK for young children last year focused on minority ethnic, disabled or neurodivergent characters

The number of children’s books featuring Black main characters fell by almost 8% last year, according to research into diversity in UK publishing.

Just 47 – or 2.1% – of the 2,189 books published for under-10s in 2025 featured a Black main character, a 7.8% fall from the previous year, according to Inclusive Books for Children. Black children make up about 8.5% of that age bracket in England and Wales.

Union says staff left with no choice but industrial action after breakdown in pay talks with Texas oil firm Apache

A looming strike by oil workers in the North Sea could “severely disrupt” UK fuel supplies, the Unite union has said, adding that staff were left with no choice after a breakdown in pay talks with the Texas oil company Apache.

The union said Apache workers had “emphatically” backed strike action after being given what it said was an unacceptable pay offer that amounted to a real-terms pay cut for many employees, at a time when the company was “raking in eye-watering profits”.

Last month, the U.S. House passed the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act, reports the Chicago Sun-Times. They call it "a bipartisan effort to require AM radio in new vehicles," adding that the bill now "awaits action in the Senate, where a companion measure has already garnered support, according to public records."

Broadcasters said AM radio remains a critical source of information, offering news and weather alerts, particularly when cell networks and internet service are disrupted or unreliable... "AM radio — all radio — has always been about connection, and in Chicago, especially, the connection is incredibly strong," Mary Sandberg Boyle, vice president and general manager of WGN-AM 720, said. "You don't need a subscription. You don't need a data plan or an app. You turn on the radio, and it's there..." Boyle said the accessibility of radio becomes especially important during severe weather and breaking news situations. "That's when local radio is really more important because we have the ability to stay live, pivot our content and what we're covering, and we can access a large amount of audience members very quickly and keep everybody safe," she said. Boyle also serves on the board of directors of the National Association of Broadcasters, which has argued that preserving AM radio access is an access issue rather than a matter of nostalgia.

The legislation emerged after several automakers removed AM radio from certain electric vehicle models, citing interference from electric power systems. Companies including Tesla, Rivian, Volvo and others have either eliminated or limited AM radio in some EVs. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which represents most major automakers, has opposed the requirement. In congressional testimony last year, President and CEO John Bozzella argued that "analog AM radio does not contribute to motor vehicle safety" and requiring it as standard equipment "is not necessary to ensure public safety."

Under the bill, the U.S. Department of Transportation would be required to develop regulations ensuring AM radio remains available in new vehicles sold in the U.S. The measure would also bar automakers from charging consumers separately for AM radio access... While public discussion around the legislation has largely focused on emergency alerts and news access, some scholars say preserving AM radio also has implications for media diversity... "I think the media landscape is really overwhelmingly homogenized right now, and AM radio is important in many markets," [said Zachary McDowell, associate professor of communications at the University of Illinois Chicago]. "It's a space that still allows for all sorts of different voices that is still open and accessible."

The article also includes this quote from Rodney Gibbs, executive director of Heartland Signal, which operates a local talk radio station. "Despite the kind of shiny objects that digital media is, AM radio still has a viable and durable audience. It's a daily, unscripted, authentic conversation between the host and the listeners. You don't get that from broadcast television. You don't get that from digital media."
