Bessent relativeert zorgen over stijgende obligatierentes

Tyres: Tyre degradation has been one of the big talking points throughout the weekend, and with the rain threatening to shake things up, it is worth taking another look at what could prove crucial if the track starts to dry.

The circuit’s naturally abrasive surface is already putting plenty of stress through the tyres, while the extreme track temperatures had been adding to the problem too. With the conditions cooling, that is less of a concern for now.

England on a high after historic Croatia rout; Republic of Ireland v Israel and WSL buildup – matchday live

Beyond the result, most memories of Croatia v England will centre on the children who populated the crowd, their high-pitched voices making the match resemble a teen idol pop concert. Writes Barney Ronay.

It is at the very least a confusing message. It seems to say: racism and children, this is a good combination. And given this seems to happen quite regularly, that racism is now a kind of children’s holiday event around here, football Christmas. And here’s your bonus bag of free tickets, brought to you by today’s matchday sponsor, racism.

“If you feel pain you have to lay with the pain,” the manager said. “The same with disappointment. It was not easy at the beginning of the camp. We had an excellent performance against Spain. The focus in the meetings, the translation of the meetings on the pitch, to bring it within these circumstances in Croatia, to win this dominant performance is the way to move on. We’ll always have a scar, feel pain, but this is the way to move forward. We’ve played in the same manner all three matches.”

Wakaliga Uganda review – a blistering superhero movie with hardboiled cops and a nefarious ‘girl with a voluminous bum’

Chisenhale Gallery, London
A young man possessed by the spirit of a mythical Buganda warrior leads the film-making collective’s explosive new diatribe against the theft of cultural artefacts – with the help of a ‘video joker’

Wakaliga Uganda makes action movies with a cast from the Kampala streets, props built out of scrap, desktop special effects and a bucketload of wit. The studio’s breakout hit, Who Killed Captain Alex?, followed a martial arts master on a mission for revenge against the mafiosi who killed his brother, a Ugandan military officer sent to clean up the capital’s slums. Featuring helicopter gunships, shootouts and kung fu showdowns, and reportedly made for a few hundred dollars, this blockbuster bears little relation to the films you might expect to find in an art gallery (setting aside the shoestring budgets). Which is to say, it is very good fun to watch.

Founded by Harriet Nakasujja and Isaac Nabwana, the film studio also known as Wakaliwood came to the attention of the wider art world in 2017 when it was included in the German art festival Documenta. That influential show was part of a general turn towards the culture being made by independent collectives outside Europe and North America, especially those that pioneer unconventional ways to fund their activities (indicatively, the studio used the money to install fibre-optic cables in its neighbourhood). Its entry on to the international art circuit brought higher production value and – if the new commission now showing at the Chisenhale is any guide – a subtle shift in direction and purpose.

Oyama Shrine

Oyama Shrine (尾山神社, Oyama Jinja) is dedicated to Maeda Toshiie, the first lord of the powerful, local Maeda Clan. The shrine was constructed in 1599 by Toshiie's successor, Maeda Toshinaga on Mount Utatsu. It was later moved to its present location. On the shrine grounds stands a statue of Lord Toshiie. There is also a nice strolling garden with ponds and bridges, designed to resemble harps and lutes.

The hype train visits an interesting siding

TypeSafe AI has a simple slogan: Build Prod, Not God. What they offer, and claim is already priced for immediate profitability, is not yet another glorified Markov chain gibberish generator but a natural language enabled general-purpose classifier designed specifically for use as a component within a larger software stack.

From the linked manifesto:
Current AI is trained to be a helpful, articulate, pleasant assistant. Reasonable goals if you assume a human is on the other side of the model. Yet the foreseeable consequence is AI that requires humans in the loop instead of running in the background. Software has never worked that way. Even the most complex software is built out of simple logic and layered abstractions, with every branch auditable. We want AI to work alongside existing software as a primitive that any programmer can invoke for semantic judgement and decisions, while still using code for what it's best at: exact computation. Computers can do so much by just branching on bits, imagine if they could also branch on common sense, understanding, and intent. This is the opportunity for true, machine-native composable AI.
Not sure they have the moat they appear to assume, but this class of model strikes me as quite promising and it will be interesting to track what comes of it.
