A man dressed as Darth Vader used a Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee meeting in San Diego to mock the city's use of Flock surveillance cameras, sarcastically arguing that the technology would help the "emperor" track "rebel scum" and find Luke Skywalker. "This is what the emperor needs. This technology will help us find the rebel scum and the hidden base on Hoth," he said. The Hill reports: He urged that the cameras be used to surveil any "rebel scum as they move from playground to playground, from playground to pool, from pool to gymnasium, because we all know that the Flock cameras are not only following the license plate readers, they are following children." The plea for the cameras shifted to raising taxes to clear out storm drains and to the clearing of homeless encampments in the city. The man said the council members can use "doublespeak" to say the police department is humanitarian.
"And how will the people trust this City Council when this City Council continues to vote for surveillance technology that imprisons them? Ms. Campbell, you must work on your Jedi mind tricks," he said, addressing City Council member Jennifer Campbell, before waving his hand to the audience. "Do it like this." Britain’s Amy Hunt, who won a historic four golds at the recent European Athletics Championships, had to be happy with second behind the American Kayla White in the 200m at the Lausanne Diamond League on Friday.
White won in 22.18sec, with Hunt holding off Nigeria’s Favour Ofili in a photo-finish at 22.32. Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson, the two-time former world champion in the event, pulled up with 70m of the race to run. Hunt said she had been “tired before the race and my pre-competition felt pretty stiff”.

The shoal of about 100 squid rose unexpectedly from a patch of the Pacific Ocean around 370 miles from Tokyo and glided near the boat for about 30 metres. The astonished researchers were the first to capture photographs of such a thing, which looked like the early stages of an alien invasion.
They were probably neon flying squid (Ommastrephes bartramii), the subsequent study states, a species that is part of a 20-strong flying squid family that was known to leap from the water but, until then, was only rumoured to also be able to glide above it.
The neon flying squid was able to gain such elevation by using the hyponome, a funnel-like muscular organ also present in other cephalopods, such as octopuses. The organ is able to force water out in a jet, propelling the body along both in and out of the sea. Photographs of the gliding squid show them with their arms (they have 10 limbs in all) splayed outwards.

Salesforce partners say they have yet to see any meaningful revenue from Agentforce, two years after the CRM giant launched its AI platform, promising spectacular growth. That's according to a recent report from TD Cowen, which surveyed Salesforce partners and found muted interest in the technology, designed to let users build AI agents for customer interactions. The survey of partners in the US, Europe, and Asia found growing customer interest in Agentforce, but no revenue yet. Asked about interest in Agentforce AI Agents, 11 percent of respondents said they had not seen much immediate interest, while 56 percent said they expected to see interest but needed time for initiatives to mature. A third of partners said there was strong interest in Agentforce as they were starting to see buying and trial activity. However, none were seeing Agentforce become a driver of bookings activity. The report also noted weaker commercial growth among partners across Salesforce's portfolio. A third were meeting or beating targets as opposed to 43 percent in the previous quarter. “Agentforce adoption [is] still subdued," the report said. Salesforce did not immediately return a request for comment. In its most recent results for Q1 FY2027, ended April 30, the CRM vendor said its current remaining performance obligation – a measure of future contract values – had grown 14 percent year over year to $33.6 billion, “propelled by Agentforce, Data 360, and Slack, partially offset by softness in commerce and Tableau.” “We are seeing incredible demand for Agentforce with annual recurring revenue now greater than $1 billion,” CEO Marc Benioff told analysts. Salesforce has backed Agentforce to help it beat the so-called SaaSapocalypse — where AI agents perform common enterprise tasks and obviate the need for software upgrades. It says Agentforce will help customers build, test, deploy, manage, and orchestrate AI agents in the enterprise. The TD Cowen report is not the only dark cloud over the strategy. Last month, a report from KeyBanc Capital Markets cited its CIO survey, which found customers did not view the CRM plan favorably. "Our checks and customer conversations have not been strong, nor has the feedback been on Agentforce. What we can piece together in the disclosed numbers does not signal building momentum and, most recently, our CIO survey delivered another blow with Salesforce being a standout for the wrong reasons," the report said. KeyBanc found that partners and customers thought enterprise data was not coherent enough to do meaningful AI work and that Agentforce, “as a product, just isn't there." ®

KRYVY RIH (ANP/DPA/RTR) - Russische drones hebben een dodelijke aanval uitgevoerd op een winkelcentrum in de Oekraïense stad Kryvy Rih, meldt Oekraïne. Volgens het land zijn er minstens vijftien doden gevallen en ruim 130 gewonden, onder wie ook enkele tientallen kinderen.
De regionale gouverneur Oleksandr Hanzja meldt dat 29 personen ernstige verwondingen hebben. De stad, zo'n 350 kilometer ten zuidoosten van Kyiv, was enkele dagen eerder ook al het doelwit van een dodelijke Russische aanval.
President Volodymyr Zelensky heeft de aanval op het winkelcentrum in zijn geboorteplaats fel veroordeeld. "De aanvalsdrones kwamen in twee golven: een halfuur na de eerste inslag en brand volgde een tweede aanval, gericht op de hulpdiensten", verklaart hij op X. Hij spreekt van "terroristische daden" en roept de wereld op actie te ondernemen. Zelensky pleit opnieuw voor meer druk op Rusland.

Na het geweld in Kryvy Rih werd ook de regio Mykolajiv aan de Zwarte Zee getroffen. Volgens de Oekraïense autoriteiten zijn daar zeker vier mensen om het leven gekomen. Onder de slachtoffers zouden drie kinderen zijn.
De Oekraïense hoofdstad Kyiv was donderdag het doelwit van zware Russische aanvallen. Daar vielen volgens de autoriteiten zeventien doden en tientallen gewonden. De VN-monitoringsmissie in Oekraïne meldde onlangs een stijging in het aantal burgerslachtoffers in Oekraïne. In juli vielen zeker 437 doden, het hoogste aantal sinds mei 2022.
NEW YORK (ANP/RTR) - De aandelenbeurzen in New York zijn vrijdag met winsten het weekend ingegaan, al moesten de belangrijkste beursgraadmeters op weekbasis wel verlies incasseren. Beleggers werden op de kast gejaagd door schommelende rentes op staatsleningen en onduidelijkheid over de voortgang in het Midden-Oosten. Voor de brede S&P 500-index en techbeurs Nasdaq kwam hiermee een einde aan een winstreeks van drie weken, terwijl de Dow-Jones voor de tweede week op rij verlies leed.
Een stijging van de rente op langlopende Amerikaanse staatsobligaties zorgde eerder deze week voor onrust. De stijging werd veroorzaakt door zorgen over de groeiende schuldenlast van de overheid en de hoge inflatie in de Verenigde Staten.
Vrijdag kwam de obligatiemarkt echter weer wat tot rust en dat werkte door in de risicobereidheid van aandelenbeleggers. De S&P 500-index won 0,4 procent tot 7674,37 punten en de Nasdaq ging ook 0,4 procent omhoog, naar 26.180,46 punten. De Dow eindigde met een plus van 1 procent op 53.277,01 punten.
