This vehicle had just completed a drive from Adelaide to Darwin and return to raise money for the RFDS. It was a reenactment of a journey undertaken 100 years previously in 1926.
From Glam Adelaide website:
The re-enactment marks 100 years since the first Australian commercial transcontinental motor tour set off in May 1926, when Captain Edward Bagot of Bagot’s Northern Territory Motor Tours and South Australian businessman Clarence Judd joined ten other paying passengers on a daring outback expedition across rough bush tracks from Adelaide to Darwin and back.
Now, 100 years to the day since that original journey began, a group of ten has set off to follow closely in their tracks, celebrating the grit, curiosity and pioneering spirit of the travellers who took on one of Australia’s great early motoring challenges.
The 2026 re-enactment is being led by Brenton Taylor and Brenton Whittenbury, a direct descendant of Clarence Judd. The Judd family continues to own and operate Grundy’s Shoes, the historic Rundle Street business that formed a fitting starting point for the modern-day journey.
The convoy departed from outside Grundy’s Shoe Store at 188 Rundle Street on Monday, May 18, before continuing north through Gawler, Clare, Spalding, Jamestown, Orroroo, Carrieton and Hawker. From there, the historic cars are continuing into the state’s far north as the journey pushes deeper into the outback.
On Wednesday, May 20, the travelling party is scheduled to arrive in Beltana for a community barbecue and screening of the original 1926 tour film, giving locals the chance to see the remarkable archival footage that captured the journey a century ago.
The route will continue with several community film nights and stops along the way, including the Oodnadatta Pink Roadhouse around May 24 and 25, the Alice Springs National Women’s Museum and Old Alice Springs Gaol on May 31 from 12pm to 4pm, and Darwin’s 1934 Qantas Hangar and other venues between June 8 and 10.
Along the way, the re-enactment is also raising funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, with the travelling party covering the costs of the journey alongside support from Grundy’s Shoes. At the time of the release, $2,582 had been raised towards a $26,000 target, with all funds going directly to the RFDS.
The original 1926 journey has also been preserved through rare historic material, including a silent film and photographs held by the State Library of South Australia and National Archives. For the modern travelling party, the re-enactment is not just about recreating the route, but about bringing one of Australia’s great motoring stories back into public view, one dusty stretch of road at a time.

Ruthven Mansions are historically and architecturally significant because they represented, when built, a benchmark in luxury accommodation in Australia, incorporating innovations such as central vacuum cleaning, automated doors, mechanical ventilation, electric light and an electric lift. Despite subsequent cycles of dilapidation and refurbishment, and the loss of original internal details, the Mansions are an important example of this style of residential accommodation, and are among the earliest of Australia's multi-storey apartments. Built in two stages (1912 and 1915), the Mansions were erected for Ruthven Frederic Ruthven-Smith, a London investor. Stage one, designed by local architects Black and Fuller and constructed by A R Maddern and Son, originally consisted of twelve large apartments, one of which was occupied by the prominent Kyffin Thomas family of Register Newspaper fame. It was also the address of W A Webb, SA Railways Commissioner, such residents attesting to the desirability of these apartments by well-to-do Adelaide families. Stage two, of five storeys, was built by W C Torode and consisted of about twenty-eight flats, the facades to Pulteney and Austin Streets continuing the design of the earlier four storey section to the south. The design, strongly residential in character, is a distinctive full bodied interpretation of the Gothic and Art Nouveau styles without parallel in South Australia.
Their careers are peaking, they’re rich in money and time – and young people think they’re cool. But maybe it’s not as simple as that
‘Stop sleeping on gen X.” I heard this on TikTok recently. I misinterpreted it, with a guilty start, as: “Stop sleeping, gen X,” because I am 51 (peak X), so always tired; while not sleeping at the time, I may have been resting my eyes. In fact, Joel Marlinarson, a marketing guru, was suggesting my generation have become a powerful, if underrated, force online.
Aged between 46 and 61, gen Xers with proper jobs are peaking, career-wise (although it’s a different story for those out of work, as a report last month on the struggles of over-50s jobseekers made plain). We’re more likely to own homes than the following generations; we’re emerging from the trenches of childrearing and, the argument goes, ready to indulge in some me-time. “If gen X were a country, it would be the world’s second-largest consumer market,” the World Economic Forum reported last year, with gen X women in particular influencing 70% to 80% of all consumer spending.

There’s a common fear among people who work in Silicon Valley: snag one of the fast-growing, high-paying jobs in artificial intelligence, or get trapped in the “permanent underclass”, a phrase describing the fate of those who won’t have upward mobility in the age of AI.
The phrase usually describes a future in which AI automates human jobs. But for women in tech, it’s starting to look like the present.

Alvin and the Chipmunks was my wake-up call. A Blu-ray copy of the film had stared down from my bookshelf for years, accumulating dust, when one day a shard of sunlight landed on it, as if directed by a higher power. This prompted some uncomfortable questions. Had I watched it? No. Did I intend to? No. So why had I let it linger there untouched for such a long time? The answer is simple: I’m a disorganised mess.
Zooming out, things weren’t much better. I had a mountain of clothes that needed to be hung up or put away, cupboards stuffed with God knows what, plates and mugs that I had never used … The thought of sorting everything out was overwhelming.
Vrede, wanneer eigenlijk.
