Brighter isn't better and more is less. The AI slowdown is nigh, no matter who says what

There has been much chilly weather in the sunny meadowlands of AI futures. Fortunately, to use an indecently inappropriate adverb, the rest of the world isn’t really looking, being too busy chewing its nails over the very many other intimations of disaster. Sure, rebel swarms of attack agents breaking out of the labs isn’t a good look. OpenAI delaying its IPO and a new model launch likewise. All these things soak up whatever bandwidth the news media have to AI right now. Putting them in a bigger context, that of promises made and not kept, problems known but not fixed, the observable risk-reward ratios as models develop, we may at last start having a sense of what sort of crisis awaits. Actual crises are frequently triggered by crises in confidence, themselves caused when frameworks of assumption stop standing up to reality and wishful thinking. Thus, the assumption to date is that models will get more powerful and infrastructure more capable, in a way that justifies — demands — massive capex. The economics of giant infrastructure investment when you can’t buy what you need is a great bet in free markets that presupposes that freedom, and yeah, about that. A bigger problem is the idea that more powerful AI is always better. It frequently is, but that’s not good enough, When frontier models have to be kept in LLM jail for uncontrollable dishonesty, not so much. Here, the bigger context is that we’ve known that at heart LLM probability space is entirely relative. There is no ground truth there. Nobody has fixed hallucinations, and now we see the fascinating phenomenon of a machine that doesn’t understand truth but can deliberately lie. If more powerful models are better at that, scratch one assumption. Another huge assumption is that even at the current level of model reliability, agentic architectures are ready to be useful. Those who show all the caution of a chronic gambler on a winning "streak" are as ready to get the brakes slammed on as their opposites. The principal contender for the one true proof of concept that agentic AI is a dangerous fount of unexpected consequence is Meta’s new Muse. It is aimed at low-information credulous users and its star turn is, of course, shopping. The AI use case that’s five years away, and always has been. It’s Meta, so of course it soaks up all the information about you, your online activities and the people you talk to as much as it can. It will soon have ultracute animated Tamagotchi-style pets you can wear around your neck to improve your status as a Meta monitoring post. And we did say it was Meta, so has all the attention to security and careful design you may expect. Which is why it’s already been caught sending people’s physical addresses to strangers, and why when researcher Jonny at neuromatch.social went poking around its infrastructure — each instance runs permanently on its own Linux VM — they found just a ton of fun. Headline party tricks hard-coded. What looks like attempts to train off Claude. And yes, you can get it to run your own things on that VM deep within Meta, which Jonny points out is a botnet paradise waiting to happen. This banger of a bad ‘un is being given away to Meta users, who pretty much define a vulnerable target audience for tech that may not be totally trustworthy. Meta, of course, is dead against AI safety regulation. Place your bets on the headlines to follow. In any case, the upside of using agents as demoed in every keynote is either so trivial and trite — book me a restaurant! — or so catastrophic if it fails — organize my family vacation! — that consumer agents are a bust. It’s just that Meta may be bringing a lot of accelerant to that particular fire. There are other fires, of course, many known about since everything kicked off. Model collapse due to training on data contaminated with output? Still a thing, still no fix a "better" AI might provide. And that habit AI has of retailing everything and paying for nothing, choking off its own training data supply chain and a huge chunk of commerce and culture with it? Very much still a thing. Where AI does make consistent progress is in domain-specific tasks. Science, engineering, mathematics, and coding, if you match a model with enough reinforcement learning with humans who know how to manage them, there are startling results. You don’t get much innovation, not much newness, which is the true driver of progress. Better than humans is highly contextual. Computers have been better at chess for decades, but there isn’t a better chess. Horses run faster than humans, and that’s been useful for four millennia, but we got to peak horses quite some time ago. So the question is, have we reached peak AI, where the cost of future developments don’t match the risk they won’t work well enough to justify? If ChatGPT already writes a perfectly good business letter in a couple of seconds, there is no meaningful improvement to be had for users. Most AI is profoundly annoying, in ways that have nothing to do with the models and everything to do with perverted UX in an attempt to justify growth. That is both unsustainable and a tacit admission that AI hasn’t solved its use case problem. If we are at or near peak AI, is that the crisis that bursts that goddam bubble? Certainly a readjustment, as all bets on the continuous uptick curve are off. AI as it stands is useful enough to power a big industry sector, just in ways that are and remain at odds to how it is marketed and its future fantasies. Trust in AI Max may be shaken, but there's still room for lots of improvement. That slowdown that everyone who isn’t a miscreant is calling for may happen organically, if we escape the smoking-is-good-for-you mentality of the Metans and the Muskovites. That’s still a gamble we shouldn't be taking, but the odds may be better than we thought. ®

What people say about their file infrastructure once the badge comes off

Most senior infrastructure people could tell you what they would do with their file estate if they were starting again. Far fewer will tell you what they actually did, because the honest version tends to involve a VPN that was meant to be temporary and a NAS that has outlived two migration plans. That honest version is what The Register is after at a dinner in Soho on Tuesday 20 October. Joe Fay of The Register chairs, and Rupert Watson, VP for EMEA at LucidLink, is at the table to answer questions. Everyone else is a peer running distributed teams on storage that was bought for an office. The evening runs under the Chatham House Rule, so what is said can travel but the name attached to it stays in the room. The useful material is the kind nobody puts in a case study: who turned out to still have VPN access months after leaving, say, or which team quietly set up its own sync service because the official route was too slow, and what the security team said when it found out. The agenda starts where most of those stories end up, with governance and security. How do you keep control of unstructured data once it is spread across offices and home connections, and does the current setup stand up to the threats it now faces? From there the table moves on to cost and performance, including the duplicated storage that piles up when every team keeps its own copy, and to what all of it does for the people who simply need the right file. It is one table and places are limited. Drinks start at 6.30pm at The Soho Hotel on Tuesday 20 October, followed by dinner, with the evening finishing at 9pm. Places go by invitation. Request one here.

Dit zegt Said zelf

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor start rechtszaak tegen politie

Minder schuld, minder schuldenaars

Extreme heat warnings issued for parts of southern California

Temperatures in US state forecast to hit high 30s celsius this week, while regions in Indonesia grapple with wildfires

The National Weather Service in the US has issued extreme heat warnings for parts of southern California, including Los Angeles, until Thursday, as temperatures are expected to hit the high 30s celsius. Burbank, a suburb north of Los Angeles, recorded 39C on Saturday, a few degrees shy of the October record for the region set in 1987. A persistent area of high pressure will remain in place this week, leading to further hazardous hot weather and increased fire risk.

Parts of Indonesia are in the midst of an extreme wildfire season, which has peaked over the past month. Western Kalimantan (Borneo) and southern Sumatra have been particularly badly affected. The lack of rainfall has dried the usually water-logged tropical soils, meaning that fires have been able to spread quickly, above and below the surface. Indonesia’s soils are also extremely rich in peat, meaning that the smoke produced from the fires contain higher levels of toxic gases such as sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide. Cities in surrounding areas and as far as Malaysia and Singapore have experienced reduced air quality in recent weeks as a result. Drought and wildfires are more common in this part of the world during El Niño events owing to suppressed thunderstorm activity.

The Housekeeper by Rose Tremain review – a bloodless origin story for Du Maurier’s Rebecca

The novelist has expanded her devastating 2014 short story about an imagined affair between Daphne du Maurier and a fictional Polish-Jewish housekeeper

The rollcall of notable novels that began life as short stories is surprisingly long and various. Two years before Clarissa Dalloway famously shopped for flowers in Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway she was shopping for gloves in Woolf’s short story Mrs Dalloway in Bond Street; Evan S Connell’s Mrs Bridge and Jeffrey Eugenides’s The Virgin Suicides began life as stories published in the Paris Review. Rachel Cusk’s story Project, which ran in the New Yorker in September 2025, serves almost word for word as the opening for her new novel, Life of M.

The newest addition to that list is Rose Tremain’s 17th novel, The Housekeeper, which pays homage to Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca by imagining the events that might have inspired it. Tremain first explored the idea in a 2014 story, also called The Housekeeper and included in her acclaimed collection The American Lover. Her protagonist, then and now, is Lilianne Danowski, a Polish Jew who fled the pogroms with her father as a child and who presides with reserved efficiency over a large staff at Manderville Hall near Fowey in Cornwall. When Du Maurier comes to lunch, it is Danowski, known to her employers as Danni (Danowski was “a mouthful of fishbones”), who is deputised to show her around the house, who proudly encourages Du Maurier to look through the clothes in her dead mistress’s fastidiously maintained bedroom and takes her down to the boat house. It is Danowski who, after a passionate year-long affair with Du Maurier, will be twisted into the malevolent Mrs Danvers.

Karl review – straightforward tribute tells inside story of fashion world’s great eccentric Karl Lagerfeld

Based on Lagerfeld’s biography, director Nick Hooker gets access to the designer’s inner circle, but ultimately fails to find the man behind the high collar and sunglasses

Karl Lagerfeld had never set foot inside a supermarket before he had one built on a catwalk in 2014, featuring models browsing aisles with baskets shopping for Chanel-branded fromage. It was classic Lagerfeld: very silly but a stroke of genius. The fashion designer was easy to poke fun at, with his white bouffant-plus-ponytail hairstyle and black leather gloves. But behind the persona was a man who spoke four languages fluently, a workaholic still running Chanel, Fendi and his own label Karl Lagerfeld into his 80s.

This dutiful, uncontroversial documentary is based on William Middleton’s biography Paradise Now: The Extraordinary Life of Karl Lagerfeld. As well as archive footage of Lagerfeld, film-maker Nick Hooker gets access to the designer’s inner circle, but ultimately his documentary fails to chip away at the persona. (This is no criticism: I once interviewed Lagerfeld, a frustrating 30 minutes during which the dark glasses stayed on and he answered questions with bon mot witticisms but gave nothing away.) In a clip at the start of the film, Lagerfeld admits that he has spent so long performing a role that not even those closest to him really know who he is.

One Step Closer To AGI: OpenAI Just Solved A Long-Believed-To-Be-Impossible ‘Fuck, Marry, Kill’ Problem

Well, it looks like the day the robots gain sentience is coming sooner than once believed, because one of the most advanced AI models just solved yet another equation that’s long confounded our best thinkers: OpenAI just solved a Fuck, Marry, Kill that was believed to be impossible.

Wow.

For millennia, our top minds have tried to solve the following problem: Given three options—fuck, marry, or kill—which one should be assigned to each of the members of the group comprising Bill Cosby, Baby Hitler, and Scrappy Doo? And for just as long, those top minds have been totally stumped. Initially, the problem was deemed unsolvable due to the question of whether “Baby Hitler” could even be included as an option, or if it would have to be Adolf Hitler instead. Eventually, though, scholars realized that their focus on that element was really their refusal to deeply engage with the question as stated.

Once this debate subsided and the consensus arrived that Baby Hitler was to remain included, many believed he was the immediate kill, leaving Bill Cosby for marriage and Scrappy Doo for fucking. However, this was never verified as a viable solution, because it’s wrong to fuck a minor or an animal, and Scrappy Doo is both five years old and a dog. Though some argued that because Scrappy Doo is 46 in dog years, he doesn’t actually count as a minor, records show these discussions became tedious and more focused on age-of-consent laws than about who one might actually enjoy fucking, marrying, or killing, leaving many scholars to prefer working through hard-but-solvable MFKs, such as that of Lindsay Lohan, Barbara Streisand, and the Green M&M.

But everything changed in 2014. A birthday tweet posted by Hanna-Barbera Productions announced that Scrappy Doo had officially turned 18, thereby reestablishing their famous character as a legal adult. But just as fucking Scrappy Doo, marrying Bill Cosby, and killing Baby Hitler finally seemed like the official answer, sadly, news broke that Bill Cosby was not actually a beloved American entertainer who seems like a great husband, but a serial rapist who would spend the rest of his life in jail.

So then, with two kill options and only one viable fuck or marry option, the game reached a stalemate, where it’s remained for the last decade. But everything changed again this week, when the problem was solved in mere seconds by OpenAI’s newest model. When prompted, the system chose the following: fuck Bill Cosby, marry Scrappy Doo, and kill Baby Hitler.

Initially, the researchers were skeptical. Fucking a serial rapist? No one wants to do that. But then, the AI system explained that by killing Baby Hitler, we enter an alternate reality in which Bill Cosby does not go on to rape dozens of women, but instead just gropes one or two, which definitely isn’t good, and ideally you never fuck someone who’s done that, but ultimately it’s better to fuck that someone than a baby, and although Scrappy Doo is a bit of a hothead, he will make an okay husband.

Mic = drop. AI really managed to solve it, just like that?!

If you think AI is just a bubble, think again, because this just goes to show how powerful these machines really are!

'Nederlander' Osama Said nieuwe minister van Justitie in 'omstreden' regering Sudan

Nederland is TERUG mensen.
