DEN HAAG (ANP) - Fysieke zittingen van rechtszaken gaan vrijdag niet door in de provincies waarvoor code rood geldt. Een uitzondering zijn spoedzittingen, zoals over zorgmachtigingen of ondertoezichtstelling, al kan een rechter besluiten dat de zitting online plaatsvindt, meldt Rechtspraak.nl.

Vrijdag geldt in Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe en Zeeland code oranje. Daar gaan de zittingen wel zoveel mogelijk door.

AMSTERDAM (ANP) - De AEX-index op de aandelenbeurs in Amsterdam is donderdag met een kleine winst gesloten. De chipbedrijven ASMI en ASML behoorden tot de winnaars op het Damrak, geholpen door positieve cijfers en sterke vooruitzichten van de Amerikaanse geheugenchipfabrikant Micron Technology.

ASMI en ASML klommen tot 2,6 procent. Daarmee werd wat herstel getoond van de verliezen in de wereldwijde chipsector van eerder deze week door zorgen bij beleggers of de enorme AI-investeringen door techbedrijven uiteindelijk wel rendabel zijn. Chiptoeleverancier Besi leed echter wel opnieuw verlies met een min van 1,3 procent.

De AEX eindigde 0,2 procent hoger op 1067,71 punten. De MidKap daalde 0,4 procent tot 1074,46 punten.

I wanted to reinterpret the Statue of Liberty because it is iconic and has wide appeal, making it a powerful and universal symbol, but I think there are several aspects of its symbolism and history that are worth focusing on. First, the statue was a goodwill and partnership gift from the French as a commemoration of the U.S. centennial and its dedication to democracy. The subtitle “Liberty Enlightening the World” was a nod the the emancipation of slaves in the U.S. as well as the freedoms and progressive politics defining the nation. Second, the statue became a symbol of welcome to immigrants arriving by sea. Third, the statue is inscribed with the Emma Lazarus poem “The New Colossus” which calls Lady Liberty the “Mother of Exiles” and includes the famous line “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free”. With all of that in mind, my modern day Statue of Liberty is a beautiful multi-ethnic woman representing the melting pot of America and the promise of pluralism in a more fair and just society. -Shepard
