CARACAS (ANP/AFP) - Het dodental van twee zware aardbevingen die kort na elkaar plaatsvonden in Venezuela is verder opgelopen naar 188, meldt voorzitter van de nationale vergadering Jorge Rodriguez. Zo'n tweehonderd mensen zouden nog vastzitten onder het puin en er zijn minstens 1520 gewonden, aldus Rodriguez.

Eerder werden 164 doden gemeld. Toen werd gesuggereerd dat werd gevreesd voor een nog veel hoger dodental. Verschillende landen, waaronder Nederland, hebben hulp aangeboden bij het zoeken naar mensen die nog onder het puin liggen.

In het noorden van het land, dat het zwaarst getroffen is door de aardbevingen, zouden winkels worden geplunderd. In een deel van het land zijn telefoonverbindingen en de elektriciteit uitgevallen, meldden lokale media.

BOGOTA (ANP/AFP) - De gekozen president van Colombia, Abelardo de la Espriella, geeft gewapende groepen in het land een maand om zich over te geven. Hij zei daarbij geen enkele concessie te zullen doen.

De 47-jarige rechtsradicale De la Espriella is leider van de partij Verdedigers van het Vaderland en wil gewapende groepen desnoods met geweld uitschakelen. In zijn eerste toespraak sinds zijn verkiezingswinst woensdag werd bekrachtigd, zei hij dat iedereen die buiten de wet gewapend opereert een maand heeft om de overgave te organiseren.

Hij won zondag met bijna de helft van de stemmen. Hij wordt in augustus geïnstalleerd. Hij heeft altijd de pogingen in gesprek te gaan met bijvoorbeeld ultralinkse rebellen gehekeld. Colombia wordt geteisterd door allerlei gewapende criminele groepen, onder meer van voormalige linkse rebellen die de 'narco-guerrilla' worden genoemd.

Bij een motorcrossclub aan de Groendalseweg in Bleiswijk is donderdagavond brand uitgebroken. De brand woedde in een loods en zorgde voor veel rook, die tot in de wijde omgeving was te zien. De brandweer raadde mensen aan om uit de rook te blijven en ramen en deuren dicht te houden.

The sad thing is that in a matter of weeks, this will all have been forgotten about. The intensely tribal nature of Scotland’s football domain means that a new domestic campaign will lead to scratching, swearing and howling that will dominate for months on end. Some may argue it will be wise to banish thoughts of Scottish participation in this World Cup. It should, in truth, serve as a much-needed line in the sporting sand.

The psychological, societal and commercial benefits to Scotland of World Cup participation have been borne out in recent weeks. Not only has the tournament captured hearts and minds in Scotland but the Tartan Army has done likewise across the United States. Scottish people, self-deprecating as standard, should take a morale boost from football supporters acting as such wonderful ambassadors for their country.

Group D comes to its conclusion tonight. The maths are simple. Germany have already won the group so can free-associate as much as they please. Ecuador need to win to progress, because should they end up in third spot, two points simply won’t suffice. Seattle’s World Cup committee is pushing forward with “Pride Match” celebrations this week despite backlash from Egypt and Iran, who have called for the cancellation of LGBTQ+ rights festivities around the game.

Last year, Seattle’s local organising committee, which is separate from Fifa, made plans for 26 June to be a Pride-themed match coinciding with the city’s annual Pride weekend.
