Fulfilling the purpose for which it was built almost 2000 years ago, football fans packed the Roman Theatre of Amman to watch the Jordan v Algeria World Cup match. I don’t know whether Roman rulers, builders, and architects envisioned their works would remain standing & useful millennia after their construction, but longevity is certainly not a priority these days.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - Na de dubbele aardbeving in Venezuela opent het Rode Kruis een rekeningnummer waarop mensen geld kunnen doneren: gironummer 5125. Volgens de hulporganisatie hebben vele duizenden mensen dringend hulp nodig. "Denk aan huishoudelijke spullen, hygiënepakketten, voedsel en water."

Hulpverleners van de Venezolaanse tak van de internationale organisatie zijn ingezet in de omgeving van de hoofdstad Caracas en de nabijgelegen regio La Guaira. Daar zoeken ze overlevenden en bieden ze medische hulp. Ook helpen ze bij evacuaties.

Gironummer 5125 werd eerder onder meer ingezet voor voedselhulp in Nederland, voor hulp aan Oekraïne na de Russische invasie en voor hulp aan Haïti na een aardbeving en een tropische storm.

Venezuela is in de nacht van woensdag op donderdag Nederlandse tijd getroffen door twee aardbevingen. De eerste had een kracht van 7.2. Een minuut later volgde een beving met een magnitude van 7.5. Volgens de Venezolaanse autoriteiten zijn zeker 164 mensen om het leven gekomen.

ROME (ANP/RTR) - Door de hoge temperaturen in Europa geldt nu voor 17 van de 27 grootste steden in Italië code rood wegens de hitte, meldt het Italiaanse persbureau ANSA. De hoogste waarschuwing geldt voor onder meer Rome, Milaan, Turijn, Venetië en Verona.

De andere steden zijn Ancona, Bari, Bologna, Bolzano, Brescia, Florence, Frosinone, Latina, Perugia, Pescara, Rieti en Viterbo. Volgens ANSA voegt Genua zich vrijdag ook in het rijtje. Met code rood wordt gewaarschuwd voor gezondheidsrisico's voor de gehele bevolking.

Tientallen miljoenen inwoners hebben nu te maken met temperaturen van boven de 30 graden. Volgens Italiaanse media worden vijf overlijdens op woensdag gelinkt aan de hittegolf. Onder hen zijn twee boeren in het noorden van het land en een dakloze man in de stad Napels.

In Seattle is de wedstrijd Egypte-Iran tot onderdeel gemaakt van de jaarlijkse Pride. De betrokken voetbalbonden hebben hun onvrede publiekelijk laten blijken, maar de FIFA houdt zich op de vlakte. De wereldvoetbalbond benadrukt dat het ‘Pride’-predikaat van het lokale organisatiecomité komt.

Amazon has promised a $13 billion chunk of its mammoth capex plans to build AI and cloud infrastructure in India. The cloud services and software giant has said it expects $200 billion capex for 2026 as, like other vendors in the market, it struggles to build compute capacity to support the expected explosion in demand for AI services. Having announced a $35 billion investment in India in 2025, Amazon's commitments in the country between 2010 and 2030 total more than $88 billion, some of which is for new retail fulfillment centers and delivery stations. The new $13 billion is earmarked for AI and cloud infrastructure, including additional AWS datacenter capacity in Mumbai and Hyderabad. AWS promises startups, enterprises, and government organizations access to custom AI chips, managed AI services, cloud technologies, and developer tools. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced the news following a meeting with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. "As we grow Amazon in India, our business priorities align with India's priorities of democratizing access to AI, digitizing small businesses, creating jobs, and enabling exports, and we are investing over $48 billion in the coming five years to meet the strong demand across our business in India and to help India achieve these priorities. We are inspired by Prime Minister Modi's vision of a Viksit and Atmanirbhar Bharat [Developed and Self-Reliant India], we are committed to being a long-term partner in India's growth story," Jassy said. Speaking to CNBC, Jassy said the capital investment plans were designed to capture an inflection point in cloud and AI markets. "When you have shifts that are this momentous, you want to make sure that you invest in such a way that you can pursue the opportunity as broadly for your customers as possible," he said. In January last year, Amazon proposed an $11 billion investment in the US state of Georgia. AWS indicated the funds would be directed toward datacenters in Butts and Douglas counties. In July last year US president Trump described India as a "dead economy," claiming that India's purchasing of energy from Russia had fueled Putin's war on Ukraine and instituting retaliatory tariffs among other trade restrictions. The tariffs were imposed under emergency-power (IEEPA) laws and were to be paid by US importers, of course, not Indian exporters. US importers and shippers last month began receiving tariff refunds after a Supreme court ruling that Trump overstepped his authority in enacting them. US Customs and Border Protection has not released specific data detailing exactly how many individual importers claimed refunds on goods shipped from India, but many have applied. In November last year, Amazon said it would invest up to $50 billion to expand AI and supercomputing capabilities for US government customers of AWS. This would add nearly 1.3 gigawatts of additional compute capacity across AWS Top Secret, AWS Secret, and AWS GovCloud (US) Regions, it said. ®

Nee maar even serieus. Wat is dit nou joh. De Gezondheidsraad schrijft dat alcohol niet gezond is (dat wisten we al) en gaat daarna de overheid allemaal dingen adviseren die extreem vrijheidsbeperkend zijn. Zo moet alcohol van de raad moeilijker verkrijgbaar worden, nóg duurder worden en zou reclame nog meer aan banden gelegd moeten worden. Daar is de Gezondheidsraad helemaal niet voor, denken wij, en als de Gezondheidsraad daar kennelijk wel voor is, dan moet de Gezondheidsraad ogenblikkelijk worden afgeschaft. En dan durven ze ook nog te zeggen: "Op individueel niveau zijn deze risico's relatief klein, maar doordat ongeveer drie kwart van de Nederlanders in meer of mindere mate alcohol drinkt, vertaalt dat zich naar een aanzienlijke ziektelast." Als we nou godverdomme één ding geleerd hebben van die hele debiele coronacrisis dan is het wel dat het leven uit meer bestaat dan gezondheid alleen, en dat het zelfs ongezond is om het complete openbare leven van vrije individuen aan te passen alleen maar om één bepaald collectief gezondheidsdoel te halen. Maar we weten het goed gemaakt. Sluit die hele Gezondheidsraad één week lang op in een feestzaal met onbeperkt ranja en gangmaker Ronit Palache, kijken hoe ze dan piepen. Blijf gewoon van ons bier af joh.

The dominant simplistic narrative that accompanied the shift from Gareth Southgate to Thomas Tuchel was that the former wasn’t ruthless enough and therefore the latter will be more ruthless. There are already assumptions and interpretations of Tuchel’s actions and words being made through that lens which need challenging.
