LONDEN (ANP) - De Internationale Tennisfederatie (ITF) heeft zichzelf per direct omgedoopt tot World Tennis. De federatie hoopt het aantal tennissers de komende jaren verder te laten groeien van 106 miljoen in 2024 naar 140 miljoen in 2035. Een ambitieus, maar haalbaar doel, aldus World Tennis.

De bond die onder meer verantwoordelijk is voor de organisatie van het olympische tennistoernooi, de Davis Cup en de Billie Jean King Cup (BJK Cup) belooft "minstens 85 procent" van haar inkomsten te herinvesteren in de ontwikkeling van het tennis. In 2024 bedroegen de inkomsten van de ITF 94 miljoen euro.

De ITF volgt met de naamswijziging andere sportbonden zoals World Athletics, World Aquatics en World Gymnastics.

The apricot orchards at Godshill Orchards on the Isle of Wight consist of 4,000 trees made up of six cultivars: sunnycot, tomcot, flavourcot, ladycot, perlecot and digat. Apricots like moderately cold winters, mild and relatively dry springs, and hot, dry summers. So, despite capricious weather, it looks as if it’s going to be an extremely productive year in the UK, and for peaches, too. The soft stone fruit season begins earlier in Italy (the name “apricot” probably comes from the Latin praecox, meaning precocious), and it has been a good year here, too, so much so that there is talk of a glut. But I am jumping ahead.

Of all the soft stone fruit, apricots are maybe the easiest to read: pale flesh with a greenish tint is a clear sign they are not ready; a deep, glowing orange one that they are – and the stronger the colour, the sweeter the fruit is the general rule. It is true, though, that the shade is no guarantee of sweetness or texture, and there is always a chance that the flesh will be woolly and bland (I have solutions), but the hope is for fragrant and luscious fruit.

Extreme weather breaks MRI scanners and cooling units, as workload rises for sleep-deprived staff on sweltering wards

Doctors have set out the disastrous impact of extreme heat on the NHS in England, with radiotherapy machines and MRI scanners failing, critical IT systems stalling and cooling units that serve entire hospitals breaking down.

The hot weather has also prompted a surge in admissions and people arriving at A&E, causing severe overcrowding in some places and exacerbating heat-related pressures on infrastructure.

This is a fascinating explotation of how LLMs fall for prompt injection attacks. It turns out that they learn to recognize the style of text in different role/instruction blocks, and not just the tags.

Their conclusion:

Role tags were a formatting trick that became the security architecture and the cognitive scaffolding of modern LLMs. We’ve shown that this architecture doesn’t survive into the model’s actual representations, and that such role confusion is linked to prompt injection.

Unless LLMs achieve genuine role perception, we think injection defense will remain a perpetual whack-a-mole game. And the continuous nature of role boundaries opens the threat of injections designed to subtly shift LLM states through seemingly innocuous text, legally and at scale.

More generally, roles are quietly one of the most important abstractions in the LLM stack, providing the boundaries meant to separate self from other, thought from communication, instruction from data. They’re human-controlled switches in an otherwise continuous system. We think they deserve a lot more study than they’ve gotten.
