There’s more than a whiff of Taken in Kenji Tanigaki’s exhilarating martial-arts movie, in which a handyman goes after some evil people traffickers

It keeps happening: every few years, usually during a run of lethargic Hollywood spectacles, the Overton window of screen violence gets recalibrated by a muscular wonder from the east. Thundering along in the bloody footsteps of the Raid films and the Hindi punch-’em-up Kill, this martial-arts showcase from Japanese-born, Hong Kong-based director Kenji Tanigaki opens in generic dadsploitation territory. “Somewhere in Southeast Asia”, as a caption has it, mute Chinese handyman Wang Wei (Miao Xie) tears off after the traffickers who have nabbed his daughter (Enyou Yang). Having Hulk-smashed its way out of the Taken box, though, The Furious starts to crank it up. Boy, does it crank it up; the closing half-hour achieves a pummelling intensity unlikely to be matched by any other release this year.

There are one or two plot developments. Cribbing from John Woo’s buddy movies, Tanigaki has his hero run into an undercover journo (Danny Dyer lookalike Joe Taslim) with his own reasons for chasing the traffickers; this route-one approach bears out the advantages of keeping things simple while turning the dial to 11. The complexities are reserved for the frame itself: jaw-droppingly limber, seemingly boneless performers pull off bruising manoeuvres on concrete floors, with Tanigaki’s well-placed cameras capturing unexpected delicacies and flourishes amid otherwise crunching dustups. It’s as if someone has brought a crossbow and a ballpeen hammer to the dance, and they’re intent on using them.

CARACAS (ANP) - De Venezolaanse oppositieleider María Corina Machado heeft de slachtoffers van de zware dubbele aardbeving in haar land "al onze kracht, geloof en gebeden" gewenst. Ze roept "alle Venezolanen, zowel binnen als buiten onze grenzen" en de internationale gemeenschap op om te helpen.

Nobelprijswinnares Machado woont zelf noodgedwongen niet meer in het land om haar oppositie tegen de zittende regering van het land. Op X zegt ze te hopen dat alles in het werk gesteld wordt om de slachtoffers zo goed mogelijk bij te staan. "Mogen kracht, kalmte en solidariteit onder ons overwinnen in deze moeilijke tijd."

Machado heeft ook een reeks berichten gestuurd aan buitenlandse leiders die Venezuela steun en hulp beloofd hebben. "De noodsituatie is kritiek, de pijn is oneindig; ieder uur telt."

De Nederlandse pensioenmarkt gaat verder open voor buitenlandse pensioenaanbieders. De overheid bereidt wetgeving voor die het mogelijk maakt dat internationale spelers een deel van de omvangrijke tweede pijler, goed voor circa 1,5 biljoen euro aan pensioenvermogen, mogen beheren. Daarmee wordt een belangrijke barrière geslecht die de markt tot nu toe in de praktijk voorbehouden hield aan Nederlandse fondsen.

Kern van de hervorming is het schrappen of aanpassen van de verplichting dat bedrijfstakpensioenen via een Nederlandse stichting moeten worden uitgevoerd. Die non‑profitstructuur sluit commerciële buitenlandse partijen vrijwel uit, en ligt al langer onder vuur van juristen en belanghebbenden die stellen dat de regels botsen met Europese afspraken over het vrije verkeer van diensten. Met de nieuwe wetgeving wil het kabinet deze juridische spanning wegnemen en de Nederlandse regels beter in lijn brengen met de interne EU‑markt.

De openstelling komt op een moment dat de Nederlandse pensioensector zelf in een grote overgang zit, met de overstap naar een nieuw, beschikbare‑premiegericht stelsel. Voor deelnemers kan meer concurrentie op termijn betekenen dat uitvoerders sterker gaan sturen op kosten, rendement en dienstverlening. Tegelijkertijd waarschuwen pensioendeskundigen dat de toezichthouder scherp zal moeten blijven toezien op soliditeit, governance en langetermijnbeleggingen, zeker als meer internationale partijen toetreden.

Voor Nederlandse pensioenfondsen en uitvoerders betekent dit een strategische omslag. Zij krijgen er serieuze concurrenten bij in de strijd om contracten met bedrijfstakken en grote werkgevers, en zullen hun positie opnieuw moeten legitimeren op basis van schaalvoordelen, lage kosten en betrouwbare uitvoering. Politiek ligt de gevoeligheid vooral bij de vraag in hoeverre een opener pensioenmarkt te rijmen is met het traditionele Nederlandse model, waarin solidariteit en collectiviteit centraal staan.

GENÈVE (ANP/AFP) - De klimaatchef van de Verenigde Naties linkt de extreme temperaturen die Europa teisteren aan klimaatverandering. "De zware hittegolf in Europa draagt onmiskenbaar de sporen van de klimaatcrisis", zegt topman Simon Stiell in een verklaring. "Het is de zoveelste tol die we betalen voor de uitstoot van fossiele brandstoffen die onze planeet doet opwarmen."

In Europese landen sneuvelen deze week temperatuurrecords en worden hittewaarschuwingen afgegeven. Ook in Nederland loopt de temperatuur flink op. Stiell waarschuwt dat de situatie alleen maar erger zal worden als landen vasthouden aan fossiele brandstoffen. "Zolang de mensheid kolossale hoeveelheden steenkool, olie en gas blijft verbranden, zal de extreme hitte alleen maar toenemen."
