England serving up the dullest game yet of the Geopolitics World Cup brought that self-same wash of familiarity. A corner of a foreign field that is forever England playing like a drain, a nation’s hopes sagging. England, our ruddy bloody England, welcome home, we’ve been expecting you.

Fashion brands were tuned to the weather forecast in Paris in the run-up to the menswear shows this week – and aware temperatures would reach 40C on Wednesday. This weekend a decision was made – the Christian Dior show, originally scheduled for the afternoon, would be moved to 9am, to avoid the heat of the day.

The change in time certainly made the experience more palatable – as did (in possibly a fashion-week first) the cool towels handed to guests on arrival, umbrellas to block out the sun and personalised fans on seats. In the grounds of the grand Musée Nissim de Camondo, which is under renovation to reopen in 2030, those in the garden even had the benefit of the occasional breeze.

The Home Office is looking for a software engineering boss ready to support systems that when they go down can ruin the day of many thousands of people and make headlines internationally. The Director of Engineering for Home Office Digital will be responsible for managing and deploying nearly 1,000 engineers working on more than 600 systems. Among many other things, these systems enable 76 million e-gate border crossings, 140 million police checks on people, vehicles, and property and seven million passport applications every year. Since February, the UK has required many foreign nationals to apply for electronic travel authorisations, which as well as blocking some dual citizens from getting back into Britain adds another item to the list of what the job application pack calls “some of the UK’s most critical and well-used public services.” The pack adds that the department is looking for “an experienced engineering lead with a deep understanding of how to operate in a fast paced, security critical and highly visible environment” adding that “this is a leadership role of exceptional criticality and complexity”. It involves managing a £60M annual budget and a software engineering function currently known as SAS, which may or may not be a naming coincidence. The successful applicant will be paid £120,000-£150,000 a year plus a 29 percent employer pension contribution, and can be based in London, Croydon, Manchester or Sheffield. He or she will be expected to serve for at least three years, although this is not a contractual requirement, and must be British or from a European or Commonwealth country with the right to work in the UK. GENÈVE (ANP/AFP) - Het wereldwijde risico op ebola blijft laag, zegt de directeur van de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, nadat woensdag een ebolageval in Frankrijk werd bevestigd.

Het gaat om een arts die terugkeerde uit de Democratische Republiek Congo, het epicentrum van de huidige ebolauitbraak. Air France heeft inmiddels vastgesteld dat het slachtoffer met een van hun vluchten naar Frankrijk is gereisd.

Volgens Ghebreyesus herinnert de besmetting "ons aan de risico's waarmee hulpverleners in de frontlinie te maken hebben".

Opschaling

De topman benadrukte dat er verdere opschaling nodig is om de uitbraak van de zeldzame bundibugyovariant van het virus in te dammen. Ondanks de goede vooruitgang "blijft de uitbraak de reactie overtreffen", waarschuwde Ghebreyesus.

In Congo zijn vooralsnog 1094 bevestigde gevallen van ebola geregistreerd, waaronder 277 sterfgevallen. In buurland Oeganda is er sprake van twintig bevestigde gevallen en twee doden.
