PARIJS (ANP) - In Frankrijk geldt dinsdag vanaf het middaguur in 54 departementen code rood vanwege extreme temperaturen. De hoogste weerwaarschuwing geldt dan voor ruim de helft van het land en betreft zo'n 38,8 miljoen inwoners. In nog eens 35 departementen geldt code oranje. In het midden en westen van het land worden maxima tussen de 39 en 42 graden verwacht.

Het gebeurde nooit eerder dat voor zoveel departementen de hoogste weerwaarschuwing is afgegeven. In 2003 werd Frankrijk getroffen door een historische hittegolf. Als de weerwaarschuwing destijds al had bestaan, zou code rood volgens BFMTV in ongeveer vijftig departementen zijn afgegeven.

Bij zonsopgang was de temperatuur op veel plekken in het land tussen de 20 en 26 graden, aldus Le Monde. De Franse premier Sébastien Lecornu overlegt dinsdagochtend over de gevolgen van de ernstige hittegolf.
